To create a searchable member directory in WordPress, first decide whether people are stored as WordPress users, BuddyPress members, or directory listings. Then add only fields meant for public discovery, choose a plugin that can search and filter those fields, place its directory block or shortcode on a page, and test privacy and access controls before launch.
Choose the directory’s data model
The record type determines which plugin features and profile settings will apply. These three approaches are not interchangeable: a WordPress user is an account, a BuddyPress member is a community profile, and a directory custom post type is a listing record.
- WordPress users: Best for a conventional membership site where each member already has a site account. WP User Manager can display a searchable directory of user profiles.
- BuddyPress members: Best when the site already uses BuddyPress profiles, groups, or profile taxonomies. BP Profile Search builds directory searches around those structures.
- Directory listings: Best when entries need their own configurable fields, categories, layouts, or attachments rather than being tied to user accounts. OmniDirectory uses a directory custom post type.
Before choosing, decide what the public should be able to find—such as name, role, organization, location, or specialty—and which information must remain private.

Plugin listings describe stated features, not a guarantee that every configuration suits a particular site. Check current compatibility, field behavior, and access controls against your WordPress setup before committing.

Build the directory step by step
1. Define fields and visibility
List the fields that visitors need for discovery, then mark each one public, member-only, or private. For example, a directory might publish a member’s name, role, organization, and city while keeping personal contact details hidden. A field being searchable does not make it appropriate to expose.
2. Create and normalize profile fields
Add only fields that you intend to use. Use consistent labels and normalized values for locations, specialties, and roles: if one profile says “NYC” and another says “New York City,” a location filter may not treat them as equivalent unless the site is configured to do so. Populate fields consistently so filters return predictable results.

3. Install the plugin that matches the record model
For native WordPress users, WP User Manager provides registration, public profiles, and a member directory with search, sorting, and role filtering. For BuddyPress communities, BP Profile Search can build search forms from profile fields and other BuddyPress-related data. For entries that should be managed as directory records, OmniDirectory registers a “Directory Members” custom post type and supports searchable listings.

Match the search form to how visitors will actually look for people. A name search can help locate a specific person; role, location, category, group, or specialty filters help visitors discover people they do not already know. With BuddyPress, BP Profile Search supports profile fields, user/usermeta attributes including roles, groups, and taxonomies. Avoid adding filters for fields that are inconsistently populated.

5. Choose a readable layout
Use profile cards or a list when visitors need photos and links to fuller biographies. Use a table when quick scanning and sorting are the priority. A custom-post-type directory can be useful when listings need configurable categories, fields, layouts, or attachments. Make sure every result offers a clear path to the relevant full profile or listing.
6. Add the directory to a dedicated page
Create a page for the directory and insert the plugin’s block, shortcode, or widget as supported by that plugin. Add a helpful empty-results message so visitors know when a search returns no matches and can adjust their filters. Check whether the plugin’s directory page is available to anonymous visitors, logged-in members, or only specific roles, and configure that intentionally.

7. Test before publishing
- Search for every field intended to be searchable, including values entered by different members.
- Check sorting, pagination, and the empty-results state.
- Review the layout on mobile as well as desktop.
- Open profile URLs directly while logged out and while signed in as different roles.
- Confirm members can edit only what they are allowed to edit, and that changes appear correctly in directory results.
- After plugin or WordPress updates, recheck compatibility, visibility, and privacy settings.
Understand what a directory plugin adds
Default WordPress search is not the same as a member directory. A directory plugin supplies a purpose-built listing experience—such as profile links, sorting, filters, cards, or tables—while an indexer such as SearchWP addresses what a site-wide search can find. If the goal is a dedicated directory page, choose a renderer and data model first; add broader indexing only if visitors also need site-wide search across user attributes.
