To create a reusable block in WordPress, select the block or blocks in the editor, open the three-dot menu, choose Create pattern, name it, turn on Synced, and click Create. WordPress renamed reusable blocks to patterns in version 6.3; the shared, reusable version is now called a synced pattern.

Create a synced pattern

  1. In the WordPress block editor, select the block or blocks you want to reuse. To save several blocks together, select them as a group.

  2. Open the selected block’s three-dot menu for additional settings and choose Create pattern.

  3. Enter a name that will be easy to recognize when you add it elsewhere.

  4. Turn on Synced, then click Create.

The new item appears under Synced Patterns in the Block Inserter. WordPress.org’s reusable blocks instructions document this creation sequence and current terminology.

Insert the pattern on another page or post

Open the Block Inserter and find the Synced Patterns section, or search for the pattern by name. You can also type / followed by the pattern name in the editor to find and insert it.

Edit shared content or make one copy different

Update every use

Edit a synced pattern in the editor and save the pattern change to update its shared content. You can also open pattern management through Options > Manage Patterns. A saved change to a synced pattern is reflected wherever that pattern is used. See WordPress.org’s synced patterns guidance.

Change only one instance

Select the inserted pattern and choose Detach pattern (called Convert to Regular Block in earlier terminology). The content becomes regular blocks, so edits to that copy no longer sync with the saved pattern. WordPress notes that detaching may not be available if the pattern is locked.

Remove a pattern

Deleting a synced pattern affects the places where it was used: WordPress says removal is reflected in all those locations. Before deleting one, consider whether its instances should instead be detached or replaced.

Choose the right WordPress feature

The best choice depends on whether you want to reuse shared content, a layout that can vary, or site-wide structure. WordPress.org’s block patterns documentation distinguishes these options:

Feature Best for What happens when edited
Synced pattern Content that should stay the same in multiple places, such as contact details, business hours, social links, or a call to action. Changes to the shared pattern propagate to its uses.
Unsynced pattern A reusable layout or design starting point when each inserted copy should be edited independently. Each inserted copy can be changed without changing the others.
Template part Repeated site structure, such as a header or footer; template parts are structural elements associated with block themes. Used to manage repeated site structure rather than shared page content.

Where to manage patterns

If your site has an active block theme, open Appearance > Editor > Patterns to access patterns and template parts in the Site Editor. That menu is available only when a block theme is installed and active. The Options > Manage Patterns route is also documented for pattern management. Because menus and labels may vary with WordPress configuration and version, use the route available in your editor.
