The same block can be placed in a site-editor template, template part, or widget area.
Create a recent comments page with the Latest Comments block
- Open the page editor. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Pages → Add New, or open an existing page where the comments list should appear.
- Insert the block. Select the + block inserter, search for Latest Comments, and select it. You can also type
/latest-commentson a new line and press Enter. - Choose the display settings. Select the block, open the settings sidebar, and set the number of comments. Toggle commenter avatars, comment dates, and comment excerpts according to the information you want visitors to see.
- Adjust the appearance. Use the block toolbar and the available style controls to change alignment and presentation. Wide and full-width alignment options appear only when the active theme supports them.
- Preview and publish. Preview the page at different screen sizes, check that the displayed commenter information is appropriate for a public page, then select Publish or Update.
What the Latest Comments block displays
The block creates a site-wide list of recent comments and identifies each commenter and the associated post. It is different from the Comments block, which displays the comment section belonging to one particular post.
The developer reference documents these core defaults:
- Five comments are displayed.
- Commenter avatars are enabled.
- Comment dates are enabled.
- Comment content is shown as an excerpt.
You can change the count and switch the avatar, date, and content settings in the block sidebar. The content setting supports no content, an excerpt, or the full comment, depending on the available control in your WordPress version.

Why comments may change without editing the page
Latest Comments is a dynamic, server-rendered block. WordPress does not save a finished copy of the rendered list in the page content; it generates the list when the page is served. As new comments are approved or older comments no longer meet the query conditions, the list can change without an editor updating the page.
Other places to show recent comments
Site-editor templates and template parts
Block themes can place Latest Comments in a template or template part, such as a site-wide footer. Open Appearance → Editor, edit the relevant template or template part, insert the block, configure it, and save.

Widget areas
If your theme provides a block-enabled widget area, open Appearance → Widgets, select the sidebar or other widget area, and add Latest Comments. A theme that does not support wide or full alignment will not offer those alignment choices.
Classic Recent Comments widget
Classic themes may offer a Recent Comments widget instead. Add it from Appearance → Widgets or the Customizer, depending on the theme. The documented widget queries approved comments on published posts and allows up to 15 comments in that widget interface. That limit is specific to the widget documentation, not a universal limit for the block.

Choosing the right method
| Method | Best location | What it provides | When to avoid it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latest Comments block | Standalone page, template, template part, or block widget area | Native setup with controls for count, avatar, date, and content | When you need features that the core block does not expose |
| Recent Comments widget | Classic-theme sidebar or another classic widget area | Built-in widget list with documented approved-comment query behavior | When your theme has no widget-ready area or you need a full page layout |
| Third-party plugin, such as Init Recent Comments | Shortcodes or plugin-specific template locations | Advertised shortcode, block, and template-override options | When a native block is sufficient or you do not want another plugin to maintain |
If you use a plugin, verify its current WordPress-version compatibility, update history, and settings before enabling it. A directory listing describes available features but does not establish that the plugin is superior or tested for your site.
Privacy and moderation checks before publishing
A public recent-comments page can expose commenter names, avatars, dates, and comment text. Before publishing, review your moderation workflow and the privacy information shown to visitors. Disable avatars, dates, or content in the block settings if displaying those details is unnecessary, and make sure only comments you intend to publish are approved.

Troubleshooting
The block is not showing newer comments
Check whether the comments are approved and associated with published posts. Because the block is generated dynamically, clear any page or site cache after approving comments if visitors still see an older list.
I cannot select wide or full width
Those alignment controls depend on theme support. Use the normal alignment, change the relevant theme layout, or place the block in a location where the theme provides the desired width.

I inserted the Comments block by mistake
Remove it and insert Latest Comments. The Comments block belongs to an individual post’s discussion area; Latest Comments is the site-wide recent-comments list.
The list is too revealing
Reduce the number of comments and turn off avatars, dates, or excerpts in the block settings. You can also restrict the page’s visibility while reviewing its presentation.
