To make a self-grading quiz, open Google Forms, turn on Make this a quiz in Settings, add questions and answer keys, choose when grades are released, then preview and test the respondent link before sharing it. Google’s shortcut for starting a blank quiz is g.co/createaquiz.
Quiz mode turns an ordinary Google Form into an assessment with answer keys, point values, feedback, grading controls and result summaries. It does not make every response fully automatic: objective questions are the best candidates for automatic scoring, while paragraph answers and nuanced short answers commonly need human review.
Before you start
- Sign in to a Google account. Google offers a personal free option; business administration and identity controls may be part of a paid Google Workspace plan. See the Google Forms product page.
- Decide whether respondents should be identified. Email collection is off by default.
- Choose immediate grade release for practice and low-stakes checks, or later release when you need to review written answers or questionable submissions.
- List any questions that will require manual grading so you do not promise an entirely hands-off workflow.
Create a Google Forms quiz
- Open Google Forms and choose Blank form, or open an existing form. You can also start through g.co/createaquiz.
- Enter a title and, if useful, a description explaining the purpose, time limit or attempt policy.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on Make this a quiz.
- Decide whether to collect email addresses and configure the respondent and grade-release settings described below.
- Add your questions, define answer keys and assign points.
- Use Preview to take the quiz as a respondent before sending it.
A normal form becomes a quiz as soon as quiz mode is enabled. Quiz mode adds answer keys, scoring, feedback, grade-release choices and quiz-result analysis; it does not automatically resolve subjective answers.

Use the question-type selector to the right of each question title. Google Forms supports multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, short answer, paragraph, multiple-choice grid and checkbox grid questions. You can also add images, descriptions and YouTube videos to questions; turn on Required when an answer must be supplied. Google’s question guidance is documented in the Workspace Learning Center.

Set the correct answer and points
- At the bottom of a question, click Answer key.
- Select the correct answer, or all answers that should count as correct.
- Set the question’s point value in the answer-key panel.
- Optionally choose Add answer feedback to show written guidance or a YouTube video after grading.
Google documents answer-key support for short answer, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, multiple-choice grid and checkbox grid questions. A defined key controls automatic scoring; the point value controls the question’s contribution to the total; feedback explains the result to the respondent.
Choose question types carefully
- Multiple choice and dropdown: Use one correct choice when the answer is unambiguous.
- Checkboxes: Select every answer that should be correct. Test the live quiz to confirm the scoring behavior you intend rather than assuming a particular partial-credit rule.
- Short answer: An answer key can score exact or matching responses, but spelling and wording variations can produce unexpected results. Review answers when equivalent wording matters.
- Paragraph: Plan to grade explanations, reasoning and essays yourself.
- Grid questions: They have answer-key support, but Google’s current documentation says grading by question is not available for grid-type questions.
For a mixed quiz, objective items can be scored automatically while short-answer and paragraph responses remain part of a manual-review workflow.
Set a default point value
Workspace’s current Learning Center documentation lists Global Quiz Defaults in Settings. Enter a default value when most questions carry the same weight, then inspect every answer key afterward—especially if the quiz mixes weighted and unweighted sections.

Configure quiz settings
Choose when grades are released

Google documents immediate release as the default behavior. If you plan to email scores, collect email addresses first; email collection is otherwise off by default. See Google’s quiz instructions.

Control what respondents can see
Under respondent settings, choose whether people can see missed questions, correct answers and point values. Showing answers is useful for practice but can compromise a reusable exam. Hide those details when later attempts or answer security matter more than instant teaching feedback.
Collect email addresses—or keep the quiz anonymous
- Collect addresses when results must be tied to a person, emailed, retained as a training record or investigated for duplicate submissions.
- Do not collect addresses when identity is unnecessary and privacy minimization is more important.
“Collect email addresses” is not automatically the same as “require a Google account.” Sign-in prompts and access requirements can also be imposed by response settings or an organization’s policies. Do not promise anonymity merely because email collection is disabled: the form may still ask for a name or other identifying information.
Set response and access controls
Limiting one response, requiring sign-in, collecting an email address and hiding correct answers are separate controls. A one-response limit is not a complete anti-cheating system. Work or school accounts may restrict responses to a domain or trusted organization; those restrictions can make a quiz available to colleagues but inaccessible to customers, applicants or the public. When sharing externally, review the organization restriction described in Google’s Forms help.

- Required questions prevent an empty submission.
- Correct answers receive the intended points.
- Checkbox questions accept the intended combination of answers.
- Feedback, missed-question visibility, correct-answer visibility and point visibility match your policy.
- The quiz releases grades immediately or holds them for review as intended.
- The form collects—or does not collect—an email address as intended.
- The responder link works in a private/incognito window while signed out.
- An external or non-organization account can open it if outside access is intended.
Use the responder URL, not the editor URL, when testing distribution. If you embed the quiz, test the embedded version separately: page width, scrolling, sign-in prompts and browser cookie behavior can change the experience.
Share the quiz
- Open the quiz and click Send.
- Choose the email tab, enter recipients, subject and message.
- Optionally select Include form in email, then send.
Google notes that including the form directly in an email is unavailable when the quiz contains a file-upload question. In that case, send the responder link instead. Details are in the Workspace Learning Center.
Link
- Click Send, then select the link tab.
- Optionally choose Shorten URL.
- Copy the responder link into email, chat, a learning platform or a website.
Embed
Choose the embed option to place the quiz on a website or portal. Confirm the published page’s permissions and test it while signed out; an owner can open a form that ordinary respondents cannot.

View responses and scores
Open the quiz’s Responses tab. Google provides three useful views:

- Summary: Overall score patterns, frequently missed questions, graphs, and average, median and score-range information.
- Question: Every response to one question, useful for consistent grading and spotting a flawed key.
- Individual: One respondent’s complete submission, useful when context across answers matters.

Grade one respondent at a time
- Open Responses and select Individual.
- Use Previous and Next to move between submissions.
- Enter awarded points and add feedback where needed.
- Save the changes.
Grade one question at a time
- Open Responses and choose Question.
- Review all answers to the selected question together.
- Award full, partial or no points and add feedback.
- Save the changes.
Question-by-question grading can improve consistency because you assess the same prompt repeatedly, and identifying information is not shown by default. Google says this view is unavailable for grid-type questions. Partial points belong to this manual-grading workflow; do not assume every automatic question type uses the same partial-credit model.
Release grades after review
- Open Responses and select Individual.
- Choose a graded response with a recorded email address.
- Click Release score.
- Select the people to notify, then click Send emails and release.
Email delivery requires a recorded respondent address. The release workflow is documented by Google at Create and grade quizzes with Google Forms.
Protect score integrity after publishing
- Avoid changing answer keys after submissions arrive. If a correction is unavoidable, document it and review affected responses.
- Consider making a copy for a new version instead of restructuring an active assessment.
- Do not casually turn quiz mode off. Google’s current Workspace documentation warns that grading settings and manually added grades may not remain available if quiz mode is disabled and later re-enabled. Applicable recovery may require Google Takeout. Changing manual grades can also overwrite previous versions for a response. See Google’s warning.
- Export or preserve important results before experimenting with major settings.
Troubleshoot common problems
“Make this a quiz” is missing
- Confirm that you opened the form in edit mode.
- Open Settings and look for the quiz option.
- Try g.co/createaquiz in a new form.
- If an organization-managed account behaves differently, test with a personal account or ask the administrator about policy restrictions.
Respondents cannot open the quiz
- Confirm that the form is available to responders and still accepting responses.
- Check domain restrictions and sign-in requirements.
- Make sure you shared the responder link, not the editor link.
- Test from a private window and from an account outside the organization if external access is intended.

Scores are wrong
- Inspect every answer key and point value.
- For checkbox questions, confirm that every intended correct answer is selected.
- Check for a question that has no answer key.
- Look for short-answer or paragraph responses awaiting manual grading.
- Check whether an answer key changed after submissions were recorded.
Grades are not emailed
- Verify that email collection was enabled and a valid address was recorded.
- Confirm that the quiz is configured for later release and the response has been graded.
- Use Release score, then Send emails and release.
Quiz mode no longer shows grading data
Treat this as a data-preservation issue, not merely a display error. Avoid toggling quiz mode repeatedly; consult Google’s guidance on disabling quiz mode and use Google Takeout where applicable.
What Google Forms quizzes cannot replace
Forms is effective for straightforward knowledge checks, training confirmations and self-paced assessments. It is not a full exam platform with guaranteed proctoring, sophisticated question banks, adaptive testing or specialized assessment analytics. Organization policies can change access behavior, and edits after submissions can affect score interpretation. Choose a purpose-built assessment system when those controls are essential.
Using a quiz with Google Classroom
Google Forms quizzes can be part of Classroom workflows, but a standalone Forms quiz does not automatically behave like every Classroom assignment or synchronize with every gradebook setup. Follow Google’s Classroom-specific instructions for quiz assignments at Grade and return question answers.

Final pre-send checklist
- Quiz mode is on.
- Every gradable question has the intended answer key and points.
- Subjective questions have a manual-review plan.
- Email collection, sign-in and domain restrictions match the audience.
- Respondent visibility and grade-release timing are deliberate.
- A private-window test submission produced the expected score or review status.
- The responder link—not the editor link—is what you distributed.
- Important results are preserved before structural changes.
