Does making a post private hide the whole site?
No. The visibility setting applies to an individual post or page, not every part of a WordPress site. WordPress documentation says sitewide restriction is not built into core WordPress and may require a separate access-control approach, such as a suitable plugin. The one-post setting does not make the rest of the site private.
