The best photography website gives visitors one obvious next step—view your portfolio, request a quote, book a session, or buy your work. Start by choosing that purpose, then select a platform and domain, curate focused galleries, add only the business pages you need, and test the finished site on phones and desktops before sharing it.
1. Decide what the website must do
Your goal determines the pages, calls to action, and platform features you need. Ask two questions: What photography do I want to be hired for or known for? and What should a visitor do next?
- Portfolio: Emphasize a fast, uncluttered presentation of your strongest work.
- Client inquiries: Add services, location, project details, and a prominent inquiry form.
- Bookings: Include session information, availability, and scheduling.
- Shop: Add product pages and checkout for prints, downloads, or other permitted items.
- Mixed purpose: Choose one primary call to action and make the others secondary.
A wedding photographer might organize galleries by weddings and engagements; a commercial photographer may group work by industry or assignment; a fine-art photographer may use named projects. Do not make visitors infer your specialty from an undifferentiated stream of images.
2. Choose a practical platform and domain
A hosted builder such as Wix or Squarespace can combine templates, hosting, galleries, forms, domains, and optional business tools. This is often the simplest route when you want to spend time on images rather than server configuration. Neither the reviewed official guidance nor the available evidence establishes a universal winner, so compare the workflow you actually need.

| Decision area | What to check | Wix and Squarespace evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and maintenance | Template quality, editing workflow, hosting, backups, and how much configuration you must manage | Both publish photography-oriented templates and managed site functions; current plan terms should be checked directly. |
| Portfolio display | Gallery layouts, project pages, navigation between projects, image handling, and phone behavior | Wix documents portfolio, collection, and project pages. Squarespace documents gallery sections, portfolio pages, image blocks, and project navigation. |
| Business workflow | Forms, scheduling, password-protected delivery, stores, and payment features | Squarespace documents forms, call-to-action buttons, Acuity Scheduling integration, and store/print options. Add these only when your goal requires them. |
| Discovery and accessibility | Page-level SEO controls, alt-text fields, readable navigation, and responsive layouts | Both provide image and site controls; test the published result rather than assuming a template is accessible. |
| Domain and billing | Custom-domain support, renewal price, included features, storage, and cancellation terms | Current prices and bundled-domain offers are not established here and can change. Verify them on the provider’s current plan page. |
Pick a domain visitors can remember
Use your name or business name when possible, keep the spelling simple, and avoid a string of numbers or a temporary platform subdomain. Register the custom domain through your chosen provider or a separate registrar after checking renewal and transfer terms. A domain offer included with an initial plan may not remain free at renewal.
3. Curate a portfolio instead of uploading everything
Choose images that represent the style and assignments you want next. A smaller, consistent selection usually communicates more clearly than an archive that includes experiments, duplicates, and outdated work.
Build galleries around a visitor’s question
- Group by service, such as weddings, portraits, food, or commercial campaigns.
- Group by project or series when the sequence and story matter.
- Use descriptive gallery names so a visitor knows what they will see before opening one.
- Place your strongest image first and finish with a deliberate closing image rather than leaving the order to upload sequence.
Wix’s published guide suggests a maximum of 20–30 photos per gallery. Treat that as Wix’s platform recommendation, not an industry rule: the appropriate number depends on the project, image variety, page speed, and how easily visitors can navigate it.

Use project pages for context
For significant assignments, add a short description explaining the client or brief (when you have permission), your role, location, and the result. Keep the writing useful to a prospective client; do not bury the images under a long biography.
4. Create the core pages and calls to action
A focused site can launch with four pages. Add more only when they answer a real visitor need.
Home
State what you photograph and where you work in a sentence or two, show a representative selection, and provide one clear button such as Inquire, View portfolio, or Book a session.
Rank #3
Portfolio
Link to your curated galleries or project pages. Keep navigation consistent so a visitor can move between projects without returning to the home page each time.
About
Introduce the photographer, relevant experience, working approach, and location. A concise portrait and a human explanation of how you work can answer questions that images cannot.

Optional service, booking, and shop pages
- Services and pricing: Explain what is included, where sessions occur, and whether a quote is required. Do not publish prices that you cannot keep current.
- Booking: Connect scheduling only if you can maintain availability and follow up on requests.
- Client delivery: Use password-protected galleries when private delivery is part of your workflow and the platform supports it.
- Shop: Add product descriptions, delivery information, and checkout for prints or downloads if selling is a genuine site goal.
5. Prepare images for the web and accessibility
Optimize before uploading
Export images in the formats and dimensions recommended by your platform, keep files large enough for the intended display but no larger than necessary, and inspect the result at phone and desktop widths. Use the builder’s responsive or image-formatting controls where available. Check that compression has not introduced visible artifacts in skies, skin, or fine detail.
Write accurate alt text
Alt text is read by screen readers and helps search engines understand an image. Describe the meaningful content briefly—for example, “bride and groom walking through a sunlit garden”—rather than listing keywords, camera settings, or file names. Decorative images can use the platform’s decorative-image setting when available. Alt text improves access and context; it is not a guarantee of search ranking.
Protect work realistically
A visible watermark can identify the creator and discourage casual reuse, but it can also distract from the photograph and can be removed or cropped. It is not a substitute for clear usage terms, licensing, or sensible file-size choices. Use password-protected galleries for clients or private previews when your platform provides that control.

6. Build, test, and publish in a deliberate sequence
- Set the goal and audience: Write down the assignment types you want and the single primary action a visitor should take.
- Select the platform: Confirm gallery, domain, form, booking, client-access, sales, and responsive-layout requirements before choosing a plan.
- Connect the domain: Configure the custom domain and verify that both the secure and preferred address resolve correctly.
- Prepare the portfolio: Edit, sequence, name, and export images; create galleries or project pages that match your specialty.
- Add core content: Publish Home, Portfolio, About, and Contact pages, then add services, booking, delivery, or shop functions only if needed.
- Complete accessibility details: Add meaningful alt text, descriptive link labels, readable contrast, keyboard-friendly navigation, and captions or context where they matter.
- Run a launch check: Open every page on a phone and desktop, test menus and galleries, submit the contact form, check email notifications, review spelling, and confirm that images load without unexpected cropping.
- Publish and gather feedback: Ask a few people unfamiliar with the project to find your specialty and contact route. Fix points where they hesitate, then share the live URL.
7. Improve the site after launch
Review the portfolio as your work changes. Replace weaker or outdated images, remove galleries that no longer support your positioning, and keep contact, location, availability, and service information current. If local clients are important, include the relevant service area in natural page copy; Squarespace’s official guidance identifies location information as one possible aid to local search visibility. Treat that as a visibility practice, not a guaranteed ranking result.
When inquiries increase, add the business function that removes the current bottleneck: a better form for lead details, scheduling for qualified sessions, password-protected delivery for clients, or a store for print orders. A display-only portfolio does not need every feature a platform offers.
