To create a photo contest in WordPress, choose a plugin that fits your entrants and voting rules, configure submissions and moderation, publish the contest pages, then test the full entry-to-results journey before launch. A public gallery contest and a photography-club competition need different controls, so decide eligibility, categories, entry limits, dates, judging, and voter access before choosing a plugin.
Decide how the contest will work
Write the rules and participant journey before building pages. These choices determine what the plugin must support:
- Who may enter, whether participants need WordPress accounts, and whether the contest is public or limited to a club or group.
- Categories, entry quota, accepted image formats, file limits, and any required information with each submission.
- Opening and closing dates, including the time zone used to determine them.
- Whether entries publish immediately or wait for review, and how rejected entries are handled.
- Whether winners are chosen by public vote, a judging panel, or a defined scoring method; also set voting eligibility and limits.
- What results will be published and how ties will be resolved.
Set contest terms before accepting entries. Address eligibility, image ownership and any license granted to the organizer, editing or AI-image rules if relevant, privacy and use of submitted information, moderation, disqualification, prizes, winner notification, and result announcements. Requirements vary by location and contest structure; plugin documentation does not establish legal compliance. Seek location-specific advice for regulated promotions or valuable prizes.
Choose a plugin for your audience and rules
These plugins offer different documented workflows. Their listings describe product features, not independent performance testing; check current compatibility, changelog, support status, licensing, and whether required features are included in the free or paid version.

Install the plugin and create contest pages
Install and activate your chosen plugin from the WordPress dashboard, then follow that plugin’s current setup instructions. The following shortcodes are documented examples, not interchangeable commands; confirm they match the installed plugin version.

Contest Gallery
- Install and activate Contest Gallery, then create a gallery in its settings.
- Add entries yourself or configure the plugin’s frontend upload form.
- Create a page to display entries and place
[cg_gallery id="1"]on it. - Create an upload page for participants and place
[cg_users_upload id="1"]on it.
Photo Competition Manager
- Use its setup wizard to create upload, voting, results, and top-three pages, or create pages manually.
- For manual pages, use the documented shortcodes:
[competition_upload],[competition_voting],[competition_results], and[competition_top3]on the appropriate pages.
For other plugins, use their own setup wizard or documentation rather than assuming these examples apply.
Configure entries, review, voting, and dates
Set submission requirements
Configure categories, submission counts, accepted file types, image limits, and required entry details. Choose whether entries appear automatically or wait for approval, and set the confirmation message entrants receive. If you collect names, email addresses, or other personal information, explain what you collect and how it will be used.

Choose voting and judging controls
Pick a method that matches the published rules: a simple favorite vote, star rating, or structured score. Set vote timing and limits, then choose whether voters must use an account, token, password, email confirmation, or another check. IP-address or cookie controls may discourage casual repeat voting, but they do not prove that manipulation is impossible. Explain the voting method to participants; for example, broad public access may suit a popularity contest, while member tokens or a password may fit a club contest.
Set the schedule and winner method
Enter the opening and closing dates using the plugin’s available controls. State the applicable time zone, tie-break procedure, and whether voting or judging determines the winner. Make these rules visible to entrants before submissions open.

Test the participant journey before launch
- Open the upload page as a participant and submit a test photo, including any required details.
- Check whether the entry appears immediately or enters review, and confirm that its category and image display correctly.
- Inspect the gallery on a phone as well as a desktop browser.
- Cast a test vote using the intended voter access method; verify any limit or confirmation step.
- Check the relevant notification emails, moderation workflow, and results view.
- Remove test content, confirm the published rules and dates, then announce the contest.
Close the contest and publish the outcome
At the announced close, apply the published judging or voting method and tie-break rule. Record the outcome, notify winners as promised, and publish results in the stated format. Retain or remove submitted images and participant information according to the terms and privacy information provided to entrants.
