To create a website for a Google Classroom course, build a Google Site as the course homepage and link it to your Google Classroom class. Use the Site for public or school-approved course information and navigation; keep assignments, student submissions, grades, and private communication in Classroom.
What “Google Classroom website” means
Google Classroom is a class-management tool, not a conventional public website builder. The practical setup pairs two tools:
- Google Sites: A course homepage for the syllabus, schedule, resources, contact details, and links.
- Google Classroom: The authenticated class space for announcements, assignments, questions, submissions, grades, and student communication.
A Site can give students and families a clear starting point without exposing private class information. Classroom can remain the authoritative place for live coursework.

What you need
- A Google Account. For a school course, use the school account and follow its administrator’s rules.
- Permission to create a Classroom class, if you need to make one.
- Your course description, syllabus, contact details, and resource links.
- A decision about whether the Site should be public, limited to your organization, or restricted to specific people.
Google Classroom is available through classroom.google.com. A school may require an account to be recognized or verified as a teacher. Google Sites publishing and sharing options can also be limited by account or administrator settings. See Google’s class-creation guidance and Sites publishing instructions.

1. Create the Google Classroom class
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in to the account you expect students to use.
- On the Classes page, select Add, then Create class.
- Enter a class name. Add details such as section, subject, room, or description if useful.
- Select Create. Classroom creates a class code that can help students join.
Google’s labels may change, but the current web flow is documented in its help for creating a class. After creation, review the class settings, invite students or co-teachers, and decide who can post in the Stream. In Classwork, organize assignments and materials into topics such as “Start Here,” “Week 1,” or unit names. Classroom supports assignments, questions, quiz assignments, and materials, which can be published, saved as drafts, or scheduled; see creating classwork and getting started with Classroom.
If “Create class” is missing: Check that you are signed in to the correct account. Your account may only be allowed to join classes, or the school may need to verify your teacher status or change its Classroom settings. Ask the school administrator before switching to a personal account, especially if students need school-domain access. 2. Create the Google Site
- Go to sites.google.com.
- Choose the option to create a site, then start with a blank site or a template.
- Name the site and give the homepage a clear course title and short description.
- Add pages using the site editor’s page controls. A useful starting set is Home, Syllabus, Schedule, Resources, Assignments, and Contact.
- Add text, buttons, images, links, or supported Google content. Use the preview to check desktop and mobile layouts.
- Select Publish, choose an available web address, set who can view the published site, and publish.
The published address typically uses a sites.google.com URL; the exact choices depend on your account and organization. The published-site address is different from the editing link. For the current options, consult Google’s publishing guide.

3. Put the important information on the right pages
Home
State the course name, teacher, subject or grade, term, and a brief description. Add a prominent Open Google Classroom button, plus a contact method. A clear note for students might say: “Current students: select Open Google Classroom to view announcements, assignments, and submission instructions. You may need to sign in with your school Google account.”

Syllabus
Summarize learning objectives, required materials, grading, participation or attendance expectations, late-work rules, and academic-integrity expectations. Include accessibility or accommodation contact information without publishing any student’s private details.
Schedule or calendar
List units, general dates, exams, and office hours. If a calendar contains student-specific or otherwise private information, restrict its sharing or keep those details in Classroom. If the Site displays deadline summaries, tell students that Classroom is the authoritative source for current due dates.
Resources
Group useful documents, slides, videos, forms, textbook links, and help pages by topic. Google Classroom also accepts attachments such as Drive files, YouTube videos, and Forms; see adding materials to classwork. Use the Site for general reference materials and Classroom for assignment-specific copies, rubrics, and work to be submitted. Work created in Classroom is stored in the class’s Google Drive folder, according to Google’s Drive file guidance.

Use this page to explain how students find work and submit it, then link to Classroom. Avoid keeping a second, manually maintained list of tasks and due dates unless you can keep it accurate. The actual assignment, rubric, due date, submission area, and private feedback belong in Classroom.

Contact
Provide an approved teacher email or contact route, office hours, expected response time, and instructions for getting technical help. Do not post student email addresses or a class roster.
4. Link the Site to Classroom
- Open the Site in edit mode and choose Button or insert a text link.
- Use a direct label such as Open Google Classroom, Student Login, or Go to Class.
- Paste the actual class URL or appropriate invitation link, rather than relying only on the class code.
- Save the change, preview the page, and test the button.
Students may need to sign in with the account allowed by the school before the class link works. Give students both the Site address and a direct Classroom route so they are not stranded if one link or permission fails.
5. Choose who can view the Site—and check file access separately
Google Sites may offer publishing choices such as Public or Restricted; school accounts can show organization-specific options. A public Site is useful for general course information, a public syllabus, or resources intended for families and prospective students. A restricted Site suits internal information, but viewers may need to sign in with an approved account.
Site access and linked-file access are separate. Publishing a page publicly does not necessarily make a linked Drive file public. Conversely, a file with overly broad sharing can expose material even if the Site is restricted. Check the sharing settings of every linked document, folder, calendar, and form. Test with the type of account your audience will use.

Never put student names or email addresses, grades, individual feedback, submissions, private accommodations, class rosters, or confidential school information on a public Site. Keep these in Classroom or appropriately restricted Drive locations. Obtain any required permission before posting identifiable student photos or work.

- Publish the latest edits and copy the published Site URL—not the editor URL.
- Open the address in a private or incognito browser window while signed out. Confirm that public pages behave as intended.
- Sign in with a student account, if available, and test the Classroom button and every important linked file.
- Check what happens for a student using a different account or school domain, if that is relevant to your class.
- Review the Site on a phone and confirm that students can find the Classroom button without scrolling through unnecessary content.
Testing only while signed in as the owner can conceal permission problems. If students need school accounts, make that requirement explicit on the homepage and provide a fallback contact route.
Fix common problems
Students see “You need permission”
Check whether the Site, the linked file, or both are restricted. Confirm that the student is signed in to the correct account and school domain. If the content should be available to the student, change the relevant sharing permission according to school policy; changing the Site’s visibility alone will not fix a restricted Drive file. Where access cannot be granted, provide an approved alternative.
The Classroom link opens the wrong account or class
Ask the student to switch to the expected school account, then try opening Classroom directly and selecting the class. A private browser window can help identify whether a second signed-in account is causing confusion. If the student has not joined, send a valid invitation or class code through an approved channel.

The Site is published, but its URL does not work
Confirm that you shared the published URL, that the latest edits were published, and that the viewer is permitted to see the Site. The address may also be unavailable because it is in use or was used previously; Google says an existing address may require choosing another or permanently deleting the earlier site before reuse. The Site and Classroom show different deadlines
Keep Classroom as the source of truth for assignments and due dates. Remove or update stale summaries on the Site, and direct students to Classroom for the current deadline.
You want to share a whole Classroom class publicly
Do not use Classroom as if it were a public course website. Google’s classwork-sharing feature is intended for eligible teachers in the same organization to share classwork or templates, not to publish a student-facing public site. The shared view may exclude the Stream, People, Grades, submissions, comments, and other class-specific areas. See Google’s classwork-sharing details.

Is Google Sites enough?
Sites plus Classroom is a good fit when your school already uses Google Workspace, you need a simple course hub, and students can use the required Google accounts. Google Workspace for Education editions include services such as Classroom, Sites, Drive, Docs, Slides, Forms, and Calendar, subject to edition and eligibility; see Google’s edition comparison. Google says Education Fundamentals is available at no cost for qualifying institutions. An individual teacher generally does not need an organization-level paid upgrade just to make a basic course hub.
Google Sites has basic design and layout controls and is not a storefront or full marketing platform. Consider a standalone builder such as WordPress.com, Wix, or Squarespace if you need a highly branded public site, extensive content or SEO controls, paid memberships, payments, or advanced customization. Those tools do not replace Classroom’s student assignment and submission workflow by themselves. For the straightforward goal of organizing a course and sending students to Classroom, start with Sites and Classroom rather than buying a separate website builder.
