To make a WordPress page full width, assign a Full Width or No Sidebar page template when your theme provides one. In a block theme, edit or create a template in the Site/Template Editor. For a single section, select its outer block and choose Wide width or Full width. If those choices are missing, the theme has not enabled the required support or its layout settings are constraining the content.

Choose the method that matches your theme

WordPress has two template systems. A block theme uses the Site Editor and block templates; a classic PHP theme uses page-template files and the page editor’s template or attributes control. The correct route also depends on whether you want the entire page widened or only one visual section.

Goal Block theme Classic theme Scope and maintenance
Make the whole page one column Create or select a reusable custom template in the Template Editor Select an existing Full Width/No Sidebar template, or register a PHP page template Applies to the page; template settings are easier to maintain than custom CSS
Widen one section Set the outer Group, Cover, or similar block to Wide or Full Use the same block alignment controls if the theme supports them Only that block changes; the theme’s alignment CSS controls responsive behavior
No option is available Review Styles and layout widths in Appearance → Editor; inspect theme.json support Use a supplied template or have a developer add one with a Template Name header May require theme configuration or PHP work

Make the entire page full width in a block theme

Assign or create a Full Width template

  1. Open the page in the WordPress editor.
  2. Open the Page settings sidebar and locate the page’s Template (the label can vary slightly by WordPress version and theme).
  3. Choose an existing full-width or no-sidebar template. If none exists, choose the option to create a new template.
  4. Name the template Full Width or another descriptive name, then open it in the Template Editor.
  5. Arrange the template’s header, content, and footer blocks. Remove the sidebar block or any constrained column that is making the content narrow.
  6. Save the template and return to the page. The custom template can be selected for other pages as well.

The Template Editor edits the complete page structure, not just the post content. A full-width template can therefore remove a sidebar while preserving the site’s header and footer.

Fix the content and wide widths

If the page still appears narrow, open Appearance → Editor → Styles and inspect the layout settings for content width and wide width. A block can be set to Full while a parent Group, template part, or root layout still imposes a smaller maximum width. In block themes, theme.json can define content and wide sizes, register custom templates, and provide root-padding-aware alignment so a full-width block can pass through the site’s side padding without making normal text unreadable.

Keep text readable inside a full-width design

Use a full-width outer Group or Cover for a background color, image, or other visual treatment. Place the heading, paragraphs, and buttons inside a centered inner Group with a sensible maximum width. This gives the background an edge-to-edge appearance while keeping line lengths comfortable on large screens.

Make the entire page full width in a classic PHP theme

Use the theme’s existing template

  1. Open the page editor.
  2. In the page’s Template, Page Attributes, or equivalent panel, select Full Width, No Sidebar, or the theme’s similarly named one-column option.
  3. Update the page and view it on the front end. Confirm that the sidebar is gone and that the main content wrapper, not just an individual block, spans the intended area.

Page templates are designed to change a page’s look and feel. The exact control name and available choices come from the active theme.

Create a custom one-column template when none is supplied

This work belongs in a child theme or a custom theme so a parent-theme update does not overwrite it. Create a PHP file with a descriptive header such as:

<?php
/* Template Name: Full Width Page */
?>

The file must then contain the theme’s normal loop and a one-column structure. The filename alone does not make a template selectable; the Template Name header exposes it in the page editor. Copying the parent theme’s page template is usually the safest starting point because it preserves required hooks, featured-image handling, and accessibility behavior. Remove or bypass the sidebar column and adjust the content wrapper according to that theme’s markup and CSS.

Make one block or section span the screen

  1. Select the outer Group, Cover, Media & Text, or comparable container block—not only a paragraph inside it.
  2. Open the block toolbar’s alignment control.
  3. Choose Wide width or Full width.
  4. Preview the page at desktop and mobile widths, then save.

Wide normally extends beyond the regular text column while retaining some margins. Full is intended to reach the viewport edges. These controls appear only when the theme enables wide and full alignment, and the front end must style the resulting alignwide and alignfull classes. If the editor shows the setting but the published page remains narrow, the theme’s CSS or a parent wrapper is overriding those classes.

Why the Full Width option is missing or ineffective

1. Identify the theme architecture first

Check whether Appearance shows Editor (a block theme) or the traditional theme-customization screens. Block themes use block templates; classic themes use PHP page templates. Their controls are not interchangeable.

2. Check the assigned page template

A sidebar or constrained content wrapper can narrow every block, including a block marked Full. Assign the correct page template before changing CSS or block settings.

3. Verify theme support for alignment controls

WordPress documentation states that Wide and Full alignment are available only when the theme enables them. In a classic theme, a developer commonly enables support with:

add_theme_support( 'align-wide' );

The theme must also provide CSS for alignwide and alignfull. Adding the setting without compatible layout CSS can produce no visible change or cause horizontal overflow.

4. Inspect block-theme layout settings

In Appearance → Editor → Styles, review the content and wide widths, then inspect the template’s parent Groups and template parts. A narrow root layout, padding, or maximum-width rule may be the actual constraint. Changes in theme.json can register custom templates (custom-template support is documented from WordPress 5.9) and define these layout values.

5. Test responsive behavior

  • Check the page at narrow phone, tablet, and desktop widths.
  • Look for a horizontal scrollbar, clipped images, or text touching the viewport edge.
  • Keep padding on full-width backgrounds and use an inner constrained Group for text.
  • Clear any caching layer after template or CSS changes, then test while logged out.

Which approach should you use?

  • Use a reusable block-theme template when several pages need the same header, footer, sidebar-free structure, and spacing.
  • Select the classic theme’s supplied template when it already offers Full Width or No Sidebar; this avoids custom code.
  • Register a PHP template when a classic theme has no suitable option and you can maintain a child theme.
  • Align one outer block when only a hero, gallery, map, or colored band should reach the edges.

In every case, make the outer visual container full width and keep substantial text in a centered inner container. That combination delivers the visual effect without sacrificing readability or mobile safety.
