To create a custom homepage in WordPress, publish a page for it, select that page as the static homepage in Settings > Reading, then adjust its layout in the editor your theme supports. A block theme also lets you edit site-wide styles, templates, headers, and footers in the Site Editor; a classic theme’s options depend on the theme.
Choose the right route for your WordPress theme
WordPress can show the latest posts on the front page or show a specific page you choose. WordPress.org describes a static front page as “a specific page that you manually set as your homepage.” You can keep posts as the front page, or assign a static Home page and optionally a separate page for the blog.

Create and assign the homepage
- Create the page: In the dashboard, go to Pages > Add New. Name it Home (or another clear name), add the content you want visitors to see, and publish it.
- Set it as the front page: Go to Settings > Reading. Under Your homepage displays, choose A static page, then select your new page from the Homepage list.
- Choose a blog page if needed: If you want posts at a separate URL, select a different published page under Posts page. WordPress does not allow the same page to serve as both Homepage and Posts page.
- Save and check the result: Save the Reading settings, then open the site’s public homepage to verify the change. WordPress.org documents this setup in its guide to creating a static front page and Reading screen documentation.
Design the page and its surrounding site
With a block theme
Open Appearance > Editor to work with the homepage and the site design. Edit page content in the page editor. For a homepage layout that differs from other pages, use the page’s Template setting to choose an available template or create one, if your setup offers that option. Use Styles for site-wide colors, typography, and layout, and edit templates or site structure for elements such as headers and footers. With a classic theme
Edit the page using the editor and customization controls the active theme provides. Some classic themes expose homepage options at Appearance > Customize > Homepage Settings; others may not. The WordPress.org Customizer documentation notes that block themes may not show the Customizer.
Check templates if the assigned page does not appear
If Reading settings show the page you selected but the public homepage looks different, inspect the active theme’s templates at Appearance > Editor > Templates when the Site Editor is available. A theme’s Front Page template can control the homepage independently of the Reading setting, so its layout may explain the discrepancy. WordPress distinguishes the Front Page template from the Blog Home and other templates in its template editor documentation.

Preview the visitor experience
- Check that the homepage is publicly accessible and displays the intended content.
- Test navigation links and calls to action, including links to key pages.
- Review the layout on a phone-sized screen as well as a desktop browser.
- If you assigned a separate Posts page, open that route and confirm it displays the blog as intended.
Menu labels and theme controls can vary with WordPress versions, themes, plugins, and hosting dashboards. Identify the active theme before following theme-specific instructions. A static homepage can be made with WordPress’s built-in pages and settings; a page builder, premium theme, or hosting change is not required.
