In Chrome, open the exact webpage you want to save, then select More (⋮) > Cast, save, and share > Create shortcut…. Edit the name if needed and select Create. Windows 11 should place a clickable shortcut on the desktop.
Before you start
- Make sure the desktop version of Google Chrome is installed.
- Navigate to the exact page the shortcut should open. Chrome saves the page currently displayed—not automatically the site’s homepage.
A shortcut to a Gmail label, Google Drive file, calendar view, dashboard, search result, or login page will therefore point to that specific page. It will not bypass sign-in requirements.
Method 1: Use Chrome’s current Create shortcut command
- Open the desired webpage in Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share.
- Select Create shortcut….
- Change the name in the dialog box, if desired.
- Select Create.
These are the labels in Google’s current desktop instructions (Google Chrome Help). Older guides may say More tools > Create shortcut; that wording may no longer match current Chrome builds.

Check and test the shortcut
Look for the new icon on an empty area of the Windows 11 desktop, then double-click it. It should open the saved address using the browser association on your PC. A normal website shortcut is still a browser link: it may open in a regular Chrome tab rather than an app-like window, and its icon may be generic or Chrome-branded.

If the page redirects, requires an account, or uses a temporary session URL, the result can differ from the original page you saved.
Method 2: Drag the site icon to the desktop
When the menu command is unavailable, use Windows’ supported drag-and-drop method:
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Find the site-information icon immediately left of the address. Depending on the page and Chrome version, it may look like a padlock or sliders.
- Click and hold that icon, drag it outside the Chrome window onto the desktop, and release.
Microsoft documents this approach in its Windows desktop customization guidance. It can be less precise than Chrome’s dialog, especially when windows are maximized.

Method 3: Use Windows 11’s shortcut wizard
This fallback does not depend on Chrome’s menu:
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New > Shortcut.
- Enter or paste the webpage address, then select Next.
- Enter a name and select Finish.
This creates a generic web shortcut. It is useful if Chrome is managed by an organization or its interface is temporarily behaving differently.
Rename, move, or remove a shortcut
- Rename: Right-click the icon and choose Rename. If the command is not visible, select Show more options.
- Move: Drag it to another desktop position or into a desktop folder.
- Delete: Select the icon and press Delete, or use its context menu. This removes only the shortcut—not the website, your Chrome installation, or your online account.
Windows 11 sometimes places less frequently used commands under Show more options.
Pin it to the taskbar or Start
You can try dragging the desktop shortcut toward the taskbar, or use its context menu where Windows offers a pin command. Direct pinning is not guaranteed for every ordinary URL shortcut; behavior depends on the shortcut type, Chrome version, Windows policy, and whether the site is installed as an app. If Chrome offers an Install option for the site, an installed web app is usually the better choice for a separate icon and app-like window.

Shortcut versus Chrome web app

Troubleshooting
“Create shortcut” is missing
- Confirm you are using desktop Google Chrome, not Edge or another Chromium browser.
- Open a normal webpage in a standard tab and check More > Cast, save, and share again.
- Try dragging the site-information icon to the desktop.
- Use New > Shortcut in Windows.
- Restart Chrome and Windows. On a school or work computer, an administrator may restrict shortcut creation.
The shortcut is not visible
Right-click the desktop, choose View, and ensure Show desktop icons is enabled. Also check whether the icon was created on another monitor or moved into a desktop folder.

Edit or recreate the shortcut after opening the intended page. Check the URL, internet connection, login status, and whether the browser associated with the shortcut is still installed. Redirects based on location, account state, or session data can change the final destination.
It opens in another browser
Windows’ default-app association may be responsible. Right-click the shortcut and look for Open with, or change the default browser in Windows Settings. Exact labels can vary by Windows 11 release and policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a shortcut without typing the URL?
Yes. Open the page in Chrome and use the site-information icon to drag it onto the desktop, or use Chrome’s Create shortcut command.
Will a shortcut to a logged-in site keep me signed in?
The shortcut stores a page address, not your credentials. You may still be asked to sign in, depending on the site and your session.
Does this also work on Windows 10?
The Chrome menu method is also available on desktop Windows, although Chrome and Windows labels can change with updates.

Can I delete the shortcut safely?
Yes. Deleting the desktop icon removes only the link; it does not delete the website, Chrome, or online data.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 11, use Chrome’s current path: More > Cast, save, and share > Create shortcut…. If that command is unavailable, drag the site-information icon to the desktop or use Windows’ New > Shortcut wizard.
