In Safari, touch and hold the webpage image, tap Copy, open the destination app, tap where the image belongs, then tap Paste. That puts the complete image on your iPhone clipboard. Copying is different from saving an original image file to Photos, copying only a subject, or extracting words with Live Text.
Copy a complete webpage image in Safari
- Open the webpage in Safari and scroll to the image.
- Touch and hold the image until the contextual action menu appears.
- Tap Copy.
- Open the app where you want the picture, such as Messages, Mail, Notes or a document editor.
- Tap the text field or document position, then tap Paste. The image is inserted from the clipboard.
Apple’s iPhone guide describes the action as: “Select and copy an image: Touch and hold to select an image, then tap Copy.” Its paste instruction is to tap where you want the text or image and tap Paste. The exact menu can vary with the webpage, image element and iOS version, so do not expect every site to show identical commands.
Choose the result you actually need

Copy is temporary clipboard content. It does not, by itself, create a permanent item in Photos. The official iPhone Safari copying guidance establishes the clipboard workflow, but not one universal save-to-Photos sequence for every website and iOS release. If you need a durable file, verify the commands shown by your current Safari and the specific site instead of assuming that Copy downloaded the original.
Copy only a subject from an image
Use subject cutout when you want the person, animal or object, not the entire photograph. In a supported photo, touch and hold the subject until it lifts from the background, then choose Copy (or Copy Subject if that label appears). You can paste the cutout into another app or choose another offered action, such as adding it as a sticker or sharing it.

Apple describes photo cutouts as available on iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later with iOS 16 and later. Availability can still depend on the current device, software and image, so a long press that selects the whole webpage image is not proof that subject extraction is available.
Copy text that appears inside an online image
When the objective is a quotation, address or product name printed in a picture, use Live Text rather than copying the picture. With the image visible, tap the Detect Text control when it appears. Touch and hold the recognized words, adjust the selection handles, and tap Copy Text. Paste the result into a text field like any other copied text.
Live Text recognizes text, not the underlying bitmap. Language and regional availability vary, so the Detect Text control may not appear for every image, language or iPhone configuration.
Paste to another Apple device with Universal Clipboard
Safari can be the source on one Apple device and another Apple device can be the destination. For Universal Clipboard, Apple requires both devices to have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff enabled, to be signed in with the same Apple Account, and to meet the applicable system requirements. Copy the image on the iPhone, switch to the other device, place the insertion point, and paste soon afterward; the clipboard item is available only for a short time.

- Confirm Handoff is enabled and the same Apple Account is used.
- Copy the image, move to the destination device promptly, and paste.
- If the item has expired, copy it again rather than trying to recover it from the clipboard.
When “Copy” is missing
A webpage may use a background image, an interactive canvas, an overlay, a protected viewer or a layout that does not expose the image as a selectable element. The official guidance supports the touch-and-hold method but does not promise that every site will provide the same menu or a universal workaround for blocked images.
- Try touching the visible picture itself, not surrounding text, a caption or a link.
- Wait for the image to finish loading, then try the long press again.
- Open the page in Safari if it was displayed inside another app’s embedded browser.
- If the page still exposes no Copy action, ask the site owner for the original asset or use a permitted download method supplied by that site.
- Respect copyright, licensing, paywalls and terms of use before reusing a copied image.
Troubleshooting checklist
The menu appears, but there is no Copy command
You may be pressing a link, text block or non-image element, or the site may render the visual in a way Safari cannot select as an image. Try the center of the picture and wait until loading completes. If no image action appears, Safari has not exposed a clipboard-copy operation for that element.
Paste inserts nothing
Make sure you actually tapped Copy, then tap an editable location in the destination app. Some fields accept text only and reject image data. Test a Notes document or a new message to determine whether the source or destination is responsible.
The pasted picture looks different
Clipboard content can be converted by the receiving app. A site may also display a responsive or transformed version rather than the original file. If exact file properties matter, use a site-provided download option and check the resulting item in Photos or Files.

Subject cutout does not appear
Subject copying depends on supported hardware, iOS 16 or later and an image that can be analyzed. On unsupported combinations, a long press may select the complete image or show ordinary webpage actions instead.
Live Text cannot find the words
Check whether the Detect Text control appears and whether the language and region are supported. Low-resolution, stylized, curved or heavily obscured lettering may not be recognized. Live Text copies recognized characters, so review the pasted text for errors.
Universal Clipboard fails
Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff and the Apple Account on both devices. Keep the devices within normal proximity and paste shortly after copying. If the clipboard has timed out, repeat the copy operation.

Can I copy an image from Chrome on iPhone?
The documented procedure here is Safari’s touch-and-hold image selection. Other browsers can present different menus and permissions, so follow the commands visible in that browser.

Does copying an image reduce its quality?
The clipboard action does not promise the original file’s format or metadata. The destination app may recompress or transform the pasted image.
Can I copy several webpage images at once?
The standard iPhone gesture copies one selected image at a time. For many URLs, an API workflow such as ScreenshotNeo’s bulk capture is a separate, automated approach.

Is a screenshot the same as copying an image?
No. A screenshot captures the visible screen, while Safari’s Copy action places a selected webpage image on the clipboard. A screenshot may include surrounding page content.
