Start with the least invasive option: use the website’s own download control or Chrome’s right-click → Save Image As when it is available. If downloads are disabled, use a browser screenshot for a visible reference, or request permission and an original file from the rights holder. A technical workaround does not create a licence to reproduce the image.
First decide what you actually need
“Copy an image” can mean two different things:
- The original file: You need the source PNG, JPEG, WebP, or another downloadable asset at its available resolution.
- A visual reference: You only need to preserve what is displayed on screen, such as a layout reference, bug report, citation, or personal note.
The original file normally requires an authorized download route. A screenshot preserves the displayed view, but it is not necessarily the original file, resolution, colour profile, metadata, or format.
Use the website’s authorized download route
Look for an explicit control
Check the image viewer, gallery controls, account dashboard, purchase page, or “Download” button. Some sites reveal download options only after you sign in, buy a licence, accept terms, or open the image in its dedicated viewer. If the site provides an export or download function, use that instead of trying to defeat a browser restriction.
Ask for the file or permission
If there is no download control, use the site’s contact details or rights-holder information. Explain whether you need the image for private reference, a presentation, a product, social media, or publication. Ask for both the file and the conditions of use, including required attribution, territory, duration, edits, and whether commercial use is allowed.

Copyright and licensing depend on the image, its author, your intended use, and the jurisdiction. The U.S. Copyright Office’s explanations of copyright and digital files and fair use are useful starting points for U.S. readers, not individualized legal advice or a universal rule.
Save an image in Chrome when the site permits it
- Open the page in Chrome on a computer.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Save Image As.
- Select a folder and confirm the filename and format.
This is the ordinary browser route documented by Google Chrome Help. If Save Image As is missing, disabled, or saves a placeholder, the site or image owner may have prevented the normal download flow. Treat that as a signal to look for an offered download method or contact the owner—not as permission to bypass the restriction.
When the saved file is not what you expected
- A tiny thumbnail: open the image’s dedicated viewer or use the site’s download control; the page may be showing a smaller preview.
- A WebP instead of JPEG: WebP is an image format, not automatically a problem. Convert it only if your workflow requires another format, and retain the original when you have permission.
- An HTML file or error page: the URL may require a session, referer, authorization, or a completed consent step. Return to the site’s supported download path.
- Nothing happens: check whether a popup blocker, account state, or site script is preventing the control from working, then contact the site.
Capture a visible reference with your browser
If you need a record of what a visitor can see—not the underlying asset—a screenshot is the appropriate fallback.
Firefox
Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature can capture a selected region or a full web page, then copy or save the result. Follow the current steps in Mozilla’s guide, Take screenshots in Firefox. Select only the image when you need a cropped reference, or capture the full page when surrounding context matters.

Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot Tool supports capturing page content. Microsoft documents the current interface and availability at Screenshot Tool. Browser features can vary by device, version, and market, so the button may not appear exactly as described on every installation.
Make the capture useful
- Set the browser zoom to 100% unless you have a reason to document another zoom level.
- Close unrelated tabs, notifications, and overlays before capturing.
- Include the page URL and date in your notes when the context matters.
- Do not claim that a screenshot is the original, full-resolution image.
- Keep the capture for the purpose you documented; do not publish it until you have checked the licence or obtained permission.
Why common “right-click bypasses” are unreliable
Disabling JavaScript
Some sites use JavaScript to intercept the context menu, but disabling scripts can also remove the image viewer, login state, consent controls, or the page itself. It does not grant rights to the image and may leave you with a broken or incomplete page.
Inspecting source or network requests
Developer tools can reveal URLs used by a page, but a discovered URL may point to a thumbnail, a temporary session resource, or an access-controlled file. Technical visibility is not authorization. If the site intentionally provides no download route, use its permission process or capture only a visible reference.
Taking a screenshot of a protected viewer
A screenshot can document the display, but it may be lower resolution than the source, include interface elements, and omit images that load later. It is a reference capture, not a guaranteed substitute for a licensed original.

The page asks for a login or subscription
Sign in through the normal site flow and confirm that your account terms allow the capture. Do not share credentials with an untrusted service or attempt to evade the paywall.
The result includes popups or chat controls
Close them before a manual screenshot. For automated capture, hide permitted selectors or use ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup controls, while keeping the capture within the site’s terms.
You need a sharper or larger result
A screenshot cannot exceed the pixels rendered by the browser or capture service. Use the site’s original download or request a higher-resolution licensed file. For a page capture, choose an appropriate viewport and retina scale, but do not represent the result as the source asset.

- Identify the creator or rights holder where possible.
- Read the page, image, account, and download terms.
- Save a copy of the licence or written permission.
- Check attribution wording, modifications, territories, duration, and commercial restrictions.
- Record the source URL and capture date.
- If the terms are unclear, ask the rights holder or choose an image with clear reuse terms.
Some licences expressly allow reuse under conditions. For example, W3C’s guidance explains permission to use WAI material with attribution at Use WAI material; that permission applies to WAI materials, not arbitrary images found elsewhere.

Can I copy an image just because I can see it?
No. Visibility or technical access does not by itself establish permission to reproduce or publish an image.
Is a screenshot the same as downloading the image?
No. A screenshot records the displayed pixels and may differ from the original file’s resolution, format, metadata, and colour information.
What should I do when no licence is shown?
Ask the rights holder for permission or use an image with explicit reuse terms. Keep the response and conditions with your project records.
Does fair use automatically cover a copied website image?
No. Fair use is a fact-specific U.S. legal analysis; the Copyright Office’s FAQ is explanatory and does not decide an individual use or apply automatically in every country.
