To copy artwork in ibisPaint X, open Selection Area → Copy in the source artwork, return to My Gallery, open the destination artwork, then choose Selection Area → Paste. Use Translate Scale to move or resize the pasted content.
One important distinction: ibisPaint’s documented cross-artwork method copies a combined image, not a set of separately editable layers. To preserve an editable layer or folder, use the layer-duplication method below.
Copy and paste between two artworks
- Open the artwork you want to copy from.
- Tap Selection Area. Select the whole canvas or the portion you want to transfer.
- Tap Copy and wait for the “Copied to clipboard” message.
- Tap Back, then choose Back to My Gallery.
- Open the destination artwork.
- Tap Selection Area → Paste. Opening the destination alone does not paste the image; you must choose Paste.
- Choose Translate Scale to position or resize the pasted image, then confirm when it looks right.
This is ibisPaint’s documented route for moving artwork between illustrations. Its tutorial describes the source illustration as having its layers combined, so treat the result as a composite image rather than expecting every original layer to remain independently editable. Copy only part of a drawing
In the source artwork, use an appropriate Selection Area option—such as a rectangle or lasso, if available in your version—to select the object or region, then tap Copy. Go through My Gallery and paste into the destination using the same steps above.

- Select a little beyond the object if its smooth, anti-aliased edges look clipped after pasting.
- Check whether the selection includes transparent space; that space can affect how the pasted image sits in the destination.
- If an unwanted background comes along, undo and try a tighter selection, or copy from a layer with transparency. Hiding irrelevant background layers before copying may also help when you want only the visible subject.
- Use Translate Scale to correct the pasted image’s size and placement. Zoom in for fine positioning and check the edges before confirming.
Selection options and behavior can vary by app version, so check the current Selection Area controls rather than assuming every mode works identically.
Duplicate a layer without flattening it
If you want a second editable copy of one layer or a layer folder, duplicate it in the Layer window rather than using the cross-artwork clipboard method:

- Open the Layer window.
- Select the layer or folder you want to duplicate.
- Open Add Special Layer.
- Tap Duplicate Folder (Layer). The label reflects whether a layer or folder is selected.
This creates a duplicate in the layer structure, making it the better choice when preserving editability matters. The documented command is for duplicating a layer or folder, not for transferring it directly between separate artwork files. Read the Layer Window guide.

Add Layer from Canvas combines the canvas’s layers into a new layer. Use it when you want a composite snapshot while keeping the original layers in the artwork; it is not a way to preserve those layers separately in the new copy. The Layer Window guide also explains how to save a selected layer or folder as a transparent PNG when you need an image asset for reuse.

Copy/Paste, layer duplication, or Copy Pen?

Copy Pen is a different tool from clipboard Copy/Paste. Copy Pen (Relative) is suited to copying relative image content, such as repairing or removing an unwanted area. Copy Pen (Fixed) can repeatedly reproduce a particular motif, such as leaves. Its settings include controls such as copy zoom and jitter angle. Choose Copy Pen for on-canvas cloning; choose Selection Area Copy/Paste when you need to transfer a selection as an object. See ibisPaint’s Copy Pen guide.
Use a keyboard for Copy, Cut, and Paste
ibisPaint documents keyboard shortcuts on iPhone running iOS 14 or later, iPad running iPadOS 14 or later, and Android devices connected to a Bluetooth or USB keyboard. To see the current assignments in the app, tap Back → Settings → Show Keyboard Shortcuts. The shortcut list can also be displayed with Shift + /, according to ibisPaint’s guide.

Shortcut assignments are not listed in the guide’s text, so do not assume that Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, or Command+C, Command+V will work the same way on every device. Check the in-app list for your setup. Read the keyboard-shortcuts guide.
Fix common copy-and-paste problems
Copy or Cut is disabled
First confirm that the intended layer is active and that you have made a useful selection, then try again. Update ibisPaint X if an update is available. Historical release notes for version 13.0.5 recorded fixes for Copy and Cut being disabled with certain brushes, including Outline, and for vector-layer copying. That history makes an app-version or content-type issue possible, but it does not explain every disabled command. If the problem persists, try duplicating the layer instead; consider rasterizing only if appropriate for your workflow, and save a backup before a destructive change. The wrong content was copied
Check which layer is active and whether the selection covers more of the canvas than intended. Also consider whether you copied a visible composite when you expected one layer. For an editable layer duplicate, use Duplicate Folder (Layer). For a merged image, use Selection Area Copy/Paste or Add Layer from Canvas. Recheck the selection and layer visibility before copying again.
The paste has an unwanted background or empty margins
A selection can include transparent space, and a composite can include visible background artwork. Undo, tighten the selection, or hide background layers if they should not be included. For a reusable object with transparency, work from a transparent layer; ibisPaint’s Layer Window guide documents saving a layer or folder as a transparent PNG.
The pasted image is misplaced or the wrong size
Use Translate Scale immediately after tapping Paste. Adjust the size and position before confirming; zoom in if you need to align edges precisely.
You need to use the image in another app
The documented workflow here covers transfer between ibisPaint artworks; it does not guarantee that clipboard content will paste correctly into every other app or retain layers. For a single layer or folder, saving it as a transparent PNG is a more explicit image-transfer option.
Do you need to pay to copy and paste?
The official product page lists ibisPaint X as the free mobile edition, and its copy-and-paste tutorial does not identify ordinary Copy or Paste as a paid-only feature. You do not need to upgrade just to follow the basic workflow described here. Availability and store details can vary by country or platform; check the official ibisPaint product page.
