For a static local copy, use HTTrack with a narrowly defined, authorized scope. It recursively downloads HTML and assets, rewrites retained links for offline browsing, and can resume or update a mirror. A mirror is not a clone of the original backend: server routes, databases, logins, APIs, and some JavaScript behavior usually require separate local implementation.
Before you copy anything
Copy only a site or content you own or have explicit permission to reproduce. Check the site’s terms and applicable copyright rules. HTTrack identifies itself and obeys robots.txt by default, but that behavior is not permission to copy protected material.
- Define the exact page, directory, or subdomain you need.
- Decide whether the goal is offline inspection of static files or a functioning development environment.
- Reserve a local directory with enough space for the expected assets and logs.
- Plan how you will recreate any backend, authentication, forms, API calls, or database data separately.
What a website mirror contains
HTTrack describes itself as an offline browser. It follows links recursively, downloads files such as HTML and images, preserves relative structure, and rewrites links so the saved pages can be opened locally. It can resume interrupted downloads and update an existing mirror. Those capabilities do not guarantee that every resource or interaction on a particular site will work offline.

Step 1: choose a bounded capture
Start with the smallest useful scope: a landing page, documentation directory, or approved subsite. A site-wide crawl can follow thousands of links and capture content unrelated to your task. The HTTrack command-line guide documents scope controls, filters, limits, login options, proxies and update behavior.

Scope decisions
- Single page: useful for checking one design or asset set, but linked pages may not be available offline.
- Directory or subdomain: usually the best balance for local feature work.
- Broader domain: use only with permission and explicit filters; third-party hosts can greatly expand the crawl.
Use the documented HTTrack options rather than assuming flags from wget or curl will work. Set limits and filters for file types, depth, host scope and download size before starting.
Step 2: run a small mirror
Graphical workflow
- Install HTTrack from the official project site and start a new project.
- Enter a project name and a local destination directory.
- Provide the approved starting URL or URLs.
- Open the options screen and set scope, filters, limits, proxy or login settings required for the project.
- Begin the download and watch the log for blocked, failed or redirected resources.
- When the crawl finishes, open the generated entry page from the destination directory.
The graphical walkthrough is useful when you want to review settings interactively. For repeatable builds, store the equivalent command-line configuration in your project notes or scripts.
Command-line workflow
The exact command depends on your scope and filters, so consult the command-line guide for the options you select. A safe pattern is to create a dedicated project directory, specify the approved starting URL, restrict hosts and file types, and set download limits. Do not paste undocumented wget flags into an HTTrack command.
After an interruption, rerun the same project to use HTTrack’s resume behavior. When the source changes, use its update mode rather than deleting the mirror; this keeps the existing structure while fetching changes.

Step 3: inspect the result in a browser
A successful process exit only means the crawler completed its work; it does not prove the copy is complete. Open the local entry page and test the exact pages your development task needs.
- Open several internal links and confirm they resolve to local files rather than the live domain.
- Check responsive layouts at the viewport sizes relevant to your work.
- Inspect images, fonts, CSS and JavaScript in the browser’s developer tools.
- Look for console errors, 404 responses, mixed-content warnings and requests still pointing to production.
- Exercise forms, menus, search, filters and other interactions instead of assuming downloaded scripts are functional.
If an asset is missing, inspect the crawl log and determine whether it was blocked by scope, generated only after JavaScript execution, protected by authentication, or served from an unapproved host.
Dynamic sites: know what mirroring does not reproduce
HTTrack’s documented model is recursive downloading and link rewriting. It does not establish that a mirror will reproduce server-rendered routes, authenticated state, API responses, payment flows, personalized content or every JavaScript-rendered interaction. Treat these as separate engineering work.
Plan a local replacement
- Export or seed development database data rather than copying production credentials.
- Create local API endpoints that return fixtures matching the responses your front end expects.
- Configure development authentication with test accounts and local secrets.
- Replace production form handlers, webhooks and payment actions with safe mocks.
- Document any feature that requires the live server so teammates do not mistake the mirror for a complete application.
Choose an output format
The official manual lists ordinary file output, MIME-HTML and single-file modes. The command-line guide describes MIME-HTML as useful when a Chromium-family browser is available and a large mirror benefits from storing a shared resource once instead of embedding it repeatedly. Verify browser compatibility and your project’s tooling before selecting it. Ordinary rewritten files are generally the simplest choice for editing assets in a local development directory.

Current HTTrack release information
The official project site currently lists HTTrack 3.50-4, dated September 25, 2026, and notes release changes including HTTPS support, files larger than 2 GB, Windows paths longer than 260 characters and WARC output. Release details can change, so check the official project site immediately before installing or pinning a version.
Troubleshooting common failures
The local page is blank
Check the browser console and network panel. A blank result can mean the entry HTML was not captured, a required script failed, or the application expects a server route. Recheck the crawl log, confirm the correct entry file, and implement the missing backend behavior locally.
Images or styles are missing
The resources may be hosted on another domain, excluded by filters, loaded lazily, or generated by JavaScript. Expand the authorized host scope only when appropriate, inspect failed URLs in the log, and test the live page’s network requests to identify what must be captured or recreated.

Confirm that the linked path was inside your scope and that the server did not rely on rewrite rules. Add the needed directory or host within the permitted boundary, then update the existing mirror. Application routes may need a local web server and route handlers instead of static files.

Login-protected content is absent
Use HTTrack’s documented login and cookie options only with authorization. If the application uses expiring sessions, client-side tokens or multi-step challenges, capture may not reproduce the authenticated state; create a safe local fixture or development login instead.
The crawl grows unexpectedly
Stop it, narrow the starting URL, restrict hosts, add URL or file filters, and set depth and size limits. Third-party analytics, calendars and search parameters can create large link spaces.
A crawl stops partway through
Review the log for network, permission or disk-space errors. Free storage or correct the connection, then rerun the same project so HTTrack can resume rather than starting over.
Performance, reliability and maintenance
- Start small: a pilot reveals scope and missing dependencies before consuming substantial bandwidth and storage.
- Use limits: depth, host, file and size controls keep repeatable jobs predictable.
- Keep logs: they show redirects, rejected URLs and failed downloads that a browser review may miss.
- Update deliberately: refresh an existing mirror when the source changes, and re-test pages after updates.
- Separate source and generated files: keep your own code and local fixtures outside the mirror directory or clearly mark modifications.
- Respect production: schedule authorized crawls considerately and avoid unnecessary repeated downloads.
