For a one-time, independent copy, download the folder from Google Drive in a desktop browser, then extract the ZIP file on your PC or Mac. For a large folder or one you want to keep updated, use Google Drive for desktop instead. The key difference: a download is separate from Drive; offline access and syncing keep the files connected to your Google account.
Choose the right kind of copy

Google Drive has separate controls for downloading, syncing, and making a cloud copy. Do not treat them as interchangeable: moving or deleting content inside a synchronized Drive location can affect the cloud version. For a detached backup, use a browser download and save the extracted folder somewhere outside Google Drive.
Method 1: Download a folder from Google Drive
This is usually the simplest method for a one-time copy on either Windows or macOS. Google’s download instructions cover computer downloads and note that the browser’s download controls apply. Drive normally packages a downloaded folder as a ZIP archive.

- Find the folder in My Drive or the relevant shared location.
- Right-click the folder and select Download.
- Wait while Drive prepares the download. Check your browser’s Downloads panel if you are unsure whether it has started or finished.
- Locate the ZIP file in your computer’s Downloads folder and extract it.
Extract the folder on Windows
- Open File Explorer and go to Downloads.
- Right-click the ZIP file and choose Extract All.
- Choose a destination and select Extract.
Depending on how the archive is named, the extracted folder may be nested inside another folder. Open it and check that the expected subfolders and files are there.

Extract the folder on a Mac
- Open Finder and go to Downloads.
- Double-click the ZIP file. macOS extracts it in the same location.
Move the extracted folder to your preferred local destination. If you want it to be an independent copy, choose a location outside the Google Drive folder.
Check what was downloaded
After extraction, compare the folder and file contents with Drive where practical, and open a few representative documents and media files. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files may be exported to formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, or JPEG rather than downloaded as native Google files. The exact format depends on the file. Check formatting, formulas, comments, charts, embedded media, and other features important to your work. A downloaded folder does not reproduce Drive’s live collaboration, sharing permissions, or version history. See Google’s information about downloading Google files.

Method 2: Copy a folder with Google Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop adds a Google Drive location to File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac. It is useful for large folders, repeated access, or copying through the normal file manager. Google provides installation instructions for Windows and macOS; a work or school administrator may restrict installation.
- Install Google Drive for desktop and sign in to the account that contains the folder. On Windows, the installer is named
GoogleDriveSetup.exe; on Mac, it isGoogleDrive.dmg. - Open the Google Drive location in File Explorer or Finder.
- Find the folder in My Drive or the relevant shared location.
- Copy it to a destination outside the Google Drive location. On Windows, right-click the folder, select Copy, open the destination, then select Paste. On Mac, select the folder and press Command-C, open the destination, then press Command-V.
- Wait for files to finish downloading or copying, then verify the contents before disconnecting Drive or removing files.
A copy placed inside another Google Drive location may still be managed by Drive for desktop. If you need an independent local copy, make sure the destination is a normal folder outside Google Drive. Streamed files may need to download as you access or copy them, so allow time for large folders.

Streaming, mirroring, and offline access
Drive for desktop offers two ways to handle My Drive. Google describes the options and their settings in its streaming and mirroring guide.

To change the My Drive setting, open Drive for desktop, select Settings, then Preferences, and choose Folders from Drive. Under My Drive syncing options, choose Stream files or Mirror files. Changing modes can change where local files are stored. Shared drives and some other Drive locations are stream-only; mirroring applies to My Drive, not every item you can see in Drive.

Make one streamed folder available offline
If you want offline access to just one folder instead of mirroring all of My Drive, select the folder in the Google Drive location in File Explorer or Finder and choose Available offline from its context menu. On Windows, Google documents the path as Offline Access > Available offline. Google says new items added to a folder marked this way will also become available offline. This uses computer storage; it does not create a detached backup. See Google’s offline access instructions.
Mac: copy rather than move
On supported macOS configurations, Drive for desktop uses Apple’s File Provider technology, and Google Drive can appear in Finder under Locations. The default File Provider path is ~/Library/CloudStorage; older or legacy configurations may use /Volumes/GoogleDrive. The exact location can vary with the macOS and Drive for desktop setup. Google’s macOS guidance warns that dragging items out of a Google Drive folder can move them, and the cloud item may be moved to the trash. To copy rather than move, hold Option while dragging, or use Command-C and Command-V to a destination outside Google Drive.

Shared folders, shared drives, and shortcuts
A shared folder’s owner or administrator may prevent viewers or commenters from downloading, printing, or copying its contents. If Download is missing or unavailable, confirm that you are using the right Google account and ask the owner or administrator whether downloads are allowed. Google explains these restrictions in its download help.
Also check whether the item is a shortcut rather than the folder itself. A shortcut points to an item stored elsewhere; your access to the target and its download permissions still matter. Shared drives have different behavior from My Drive: they can be streamed but cannot be mirrored in the same way. See Google’s guidance on shortcuts and shared folders and its sync options.
Troubleshooting
The Download option is missing or disabled
- Confirm you selected the folder, rather than a shortcut or an item you cannot download.
- Check that you are signed in to the account that has access.
- The owner may have disabled downloading, printing, or copying for people with viewer or commenter access. Ask for permission or an allowed way to receive the files; do not try to bypass the restriction.
- In a shared drive, your role or the organization’s policies may limit downloads.
The browser download stalls or fails
- Check the browser’s Downloads panel and confirm the computer has enough free disk space.
- Try Chrome or Edge, or temporarily disable extensions that may interfere with the download.
- Browser privacy settings that block third-party cookies can interfere with Drive downloads. Check Google’s cookie troubleshooting steps and allow the required Drive access if appropriate.
- For a large folder, download smaller subfolders separately or use Drive for desktop.
The ZIP file will not open or seems incomplete
- Confirm the download finished, then try downloading it again.
- Use the built-in Windows or macOS extractor first. If it still fails, try a reputable archive utility.
- Download smaller subfolders if the archive is very large, and check whether security software interrupted or quarantined the file.
- After extraction, open representative files and compare the contents with Drive before relying on the copy.
The folder is not available offline or the copy is incomplete
- Make sure Drive for desktop is running and signed in to the correct account.
- Check that the computer has enough free storage. Streaming still uses local cache space; offline access uses more. Google account storage and computer disk space are separate measures. See Google’s storage information.
- Wait for downloads to complete before disconnecting Drive or deleting files.
- If you disconnect a Drive account, offline streamed files are removed; mirrored files remain on the computer. For a separate backup, copy files outside Drive’s managed location and verify them first.
- If settings or installation options are unavailable on a work or school computer, contact the administrator.
Which method should you use?
Use a browser download for a straightforward, one-time copy: extract the ZIP, check the files, and store the folder outside Google Drive if you want it independent. Use Drive for desktop when the folder is large, you need convenient file-manager access, or you want selected files offline and synchronized. Mirror My Drive only when you need all of My Drive stored locally and have room for it. For an account-wide export or migration rather than one folder, Google Takeout may be more suitable; its Drive export can include files, versions, and metadata, though exports can fail if size limits are exceeded.
