To convert a YouTube thumbnail, make a canvas in the destination shape, scale the image proportionally, then choose whether to crop the overflow or add padding. Use 16:9 for a standard video thumbnail and 9:16 for a Short. YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard videos and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts; 1280 × 720 remains a useful smaller 16:9 working size.
Choose the right dimensions for the destination
Start by deciding whether the image is for a regular YouTube video or a Short. The formats have opposite orientations, so a thumbnail prepared for one will not fit the other without reframing.
| Destination | Aspect ratio | YouTube Help recommendation | Minimum dimension stated by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 16:9 landscape | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 640 pixels wide |
| Short | 9:16 portrait | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 640 pixels high |
YouTube Help recommends JPG or PNG. For standard video thumbnails, it states a file-size ceiling of 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. Limits for Shorts and podcasts can vary by device or category, so check the upload screen for the applicable limit. YouTube Help: add video thumbnails.

When to use 1280 × 720
Although YouTube Help now recommends a larger standard-video source, 1280 × 720 is still a practical 16:9 size for design tools and publishing workflows that specify it. Google’s YouTube playbook documents it as a thumbnail size with a 640-pixel minimum width, and the YouTube Data API lists it as the usual maximum-resolution, or maxres, served thumbnail size. Choose 3840 × 2160 when you want to retain a larger source; use 1280 × 720 when a smaller file is more convenient and adequate for your workflow. Convert the image without distorting it
- Set the destination canvas. For a standard video, use 3840 × 2160 or 1280 × 720. For a Short, use 2160 × 3840. Set dimensions in pixels; print DPI does not determine the image’s pixel dimensions on YouTube.
- Place the source image and lock its aspect ratio. Scale width and height together. Do not drag only one edge to force the image into the canvas: that stretches faces, logos and text.
- Choose crop or padding. Use crop when the image can lose some of its edges and you want the canvas filled. Use padding or a designed background when the whole source must remain visible.
- Reposition the subject. After a crop, move the image so faces, titles and other important details remain in frame. Keep key content toward the central area and preview it at a small size as an editorial readability check.
- Export and check the file. Save as JPG or PNG, then confirm the exported pixel dimensions and file size before uploading.
Crop versus contain: choose how the image fits
These methods preserve the source image’s proportions. They differ in whether the canvas is filled or the entire source remains visible.
| Method | What happens | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover / crop | The image is scaled until it fills the canvas; the excess beyond the canvas is trimmed. | You want an edge-to-edge image and can lose some content near the edges. | Parts of the source may be cut off. Check the framing before export. |
| Contain / pad | The complete image is scaled to fit inside the canvas; the remaining area is filled with a background. | The entire source must stay visible. | Bars or empty space remain at the sides or top and bottom unless you design the background. |
How the conversion math works
For a source image with width W and height H, compare its ratio W/H with the target. A 16:9 canvas has a ratio of about 1.777; a 9:16 canvas has a ratio of 0.5625.
- Contain: multiply both source dimensions by
min(target_width/W, target_height/H). The whole image fits, leaving space to fill. - Cover: multiply both dimensions by
max(target_width/W, target_height/H). The canvas fills, and the overflow is cropped.
Example: square image to 1280 × 720
A 1080 × 1080 square has a 1:1 ratio, not 16:9. With cover, scale it to 1280 × 1280 and crop 560 pixels vertically in total. With contain, scale it to 720 × 720 and fill 560 pixels horizontally in total. These results follow from the dimensions; they are not a claim about which design performs better.

Example: 1920 × 1080 to 1280 × 720
Both images are 16:9. Scale by 1280 ÷ 1920, or two-thirds, to get 1280 × 720 exactly. No crop or padding is needed.

Choose an export format and manage file size
| Format | Useful for | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photographic thumbnails and smaller exports. | If the file is too large, reduce JPG quality modestly and inspect text and fine edges for artifacts. |
| PNG | Graphics with sharp text or transparency needs. | PNG can produce a larger file. Simplify transparent effects or use JPG when transparency is not needed and the image is photographic. |
If the standard-video export exceeds the applicable upload limit, first confirm whether you are uploading on mobile or desktop. You can reduce JPG quality, simplify effects, or export at 1280 × 720 while keeping the 16:9 ratio. Do not change the ratio to meet a file-size limit.
What YouTube may do to uploaded thumbnails
The YouTube Data API lists thumbnail variants that can include 120 × 90 (default), 320 × 180 (medium), 480 × 360 (high), 640 × 480 (standard), and 1280 × 720 (maxres). The variants available depend on the resource. The API also says an uploaded image that does not match required dimensions is resized without changing its aspect ratio; black bars may be added. Preparing the crop or padding yourself lets you control how the final composition looks. YouTube Data API thumbnail resource.
Upload the converted thumbnail
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the video whose thumbnail you are changing.
- Open the video’s thumbnail control and choose the converted JPG or PNG file.
- Save the change. Custom thumbnails require a verified account according to YouTube Help.
- For a Short, add a custom thumbnail in Studio on a computer. YouTube’s stated workflow may differ from the standard video’s upload flow.
- If the new thumbnail does not appear immediately, allow time for the change to show.
Thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube warns that prohibited sexual, hateful, violent or dangerous imagery can lead to rejection or strikes; see YouTube Help.

- The subject looks stretched: the editor likely changed width and height independently. Undo, lock the aspect ratio, and use crop or padding to fit the destination.
- The image has bars or empty space: that is expected with contain/pad when the source and target ratios differ. Choose a background that suits the design, or switch to cover and accept the crop.
- Important content is cut off: the cover crop is trimming the source. Reposition it, reduce the crop by using padding, or start with a source framed for the destination ratio.
- The file is rejected as too large: check the device-specific limit for the type of thumbnail you are uploading. Reduce JPG quality slightly, simplify effects, or use a smaller export with the same ratio.
- The thumbnail looks soft: avoid enlarging a small source more than necessary. Use a higher-resolution source if available, and inspect the exported file at its actual pixel dimensions.
- The custom-thumbnail option is unavailable: verify the account as required by YouTube Help. For Shorts, use Studio on a computer.
- The new image is not visible yet: YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Confirm that the upload was saved, then check again later.
- The upload is rejected for content: review YouTube’s Community Guidelines, since prohibited imagery can result in rejection or strikes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 1280 × 720 thumbnail for a standard YouTube video?
Yes. It is a practical 16:9 working size and is listed by the YouTube Data API as the usual maxres served size, although YouTube Help recommends a 3840 × 2160 source.
Should I stretch a square image into a YouTube thumbnail?
No. Keep the aspect ratio locked, then use a crop for a full canvas or padding to keep the whole square visible.
Can I add a custom thumbnail to a YouTube Short?
YouTube Help says Shorts custom thumbnails are currently added in Studio on a computer.
