How to Convert WhatsApp Audio to MP3 on iPhone, Android, and PC

Save the WhatsApp recording to your device, then transcode it with a local tool such as FFmpeg or Audacity. Many voice notes are Opus audio—not MP3—while an audio attachment may already be MP3 or another format. Renaming a file to end in .mp3 does not convert it.

Check the file before converting

WhatsApp audio can be a voice note or a regular audio attachment. Voice notes are commonly encountered as Opus audio in an Ogg-style container; attachments may be MP3, M4A/AAC, AMR, OGG, or another format. A study of WhatsApp voice messages describes the Opus/Ogg format, while Meta’s Business Platform documentation lists several supported audio types and specifies Opus for OGG voice messages. Those sources do not define every consumer-app storage behavior, so check the file you have rather than assuming its format.

Inspect the extension and, if possible, the file’s properties or media information. Extensions can be hidden or misleading. If the file is already a valid MP3, you do not need to convert it. If your player accepts Opus, you may not need an MP3 at all: Android’s supported-formats table lists both MP3 and Opus decoding in Ogg, MP4, and Matroska containers on supported Android versions. MP3 is usually a compatibility choice, not a quality upgrade.

Keep the original. WhatsApp voice notes are already compressed, and converting Opus to MP3 generally means another lossy encoding step. It cannot restore information discarded during the original recording.

Save the audio from WhatsApp

On iPhone

1. Open the WhatsApp conversation and press and hold the voice note or audio attachment.
2. Choose Share or Forward, depending on the WhatsApp version and the options shown.
3. In the iOS share sheet, choose Save to Files.
4. Select On My iPhone or a folder in iCloud Drive, then tap Save.
5. Open Files, locate the saved item, and check its name or file information before converting.

If WhatsApp does not offer a usable save option, try forwarding the recording to a private chat or another account you control, then download it using WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. Export Chat with Media is another recovery route; it may produce a ZIP containing chat text and media, rather than a single audio file.

On Android

1. Open the conversation and long-press the recording.
2. Choose Share, Forward, or the relevant option in the three-dot menu; the labels vary by app version.
3. Choose a storage destination or file-management app and save the recording to a known location, such as Downloads or Documents.
4. Open the Files app, find the saved file, and inspect its extension or properties.

Some Android installations place WhatsApp media under a path resembling Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes. This is an example, not a universal path: Android release, manufacturer, WhatsApp installation, and whether the item is a voice note or attachment can affect its location. Storage restrictions may also prevent a file manager from browsing that directory. If you cannot access it, use WhatsApp’s share or export functions rather than trying to bypass Android protections. On WhatsApp Web or desktop

1. Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app and go to the conversation.
2. Find the voice note or attachment, open its message menu, and choose Download or the equivalent save command.
3. Save it in a known folder, then inspect the downloaded file’s extension and format.

Button names and locations can differ between desktop builds. Once the recording is in a normal folder, you can convert one file or process a copy of a media folder in a batch.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a local command-line option for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Install a build that includes the MP3 encoder, libmp3lame, and run the command from the folder containing the saved recording. The command syntax and codec options are documented at FFmpeg’s command-line reference and codec documentation.

ffmpeg -i input.opus -vn -codec:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

• Replace input.opus with the actual source filename. For an Ogg file, for example, use input.ogg.
• -vn ignores any video stream; it is harmless for an audio-only recording.
• -codec:a libmp3lame selects MP3 encoding.
• -q:a 2 requests a high-quality variable-bitrate setting. It does not restore quality missing from the source.

If a destination service requires a fixed bitrate, use a bitrate option instead:

ffmpeg -i input.opus -vn -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.mp3

Use the fixed rate only when needed by the destination. For speech, 128 kbps is often adequate, but a higher number does not improve the original WhatsApp recording.

For a large conversion, work on a copy of the exported media folder and convert only the intended files. On macOS or Linux, this loop handles files ending in .opus in the current folder:

These examples match the .opus extension only. If your files use another extension, adjust the pattern and input handling. Batch jobs can consume storage or create name conflicts; preserve originals and check the output folder.

Verify that the output is really MP3

Use FFmpeg’s media-inspection tool on the result:

ffprobe output.mp3

Check that the audio stream is identified as MP3, not Ogg/Opus. A filename ending in .mp3 alone is not proof that the audio was re-encoded.

Convert with Audacity

Audacity offers a graphical workflow for importing, trimming, and exporting audio. Some source formats, including Opus and certain compressed formats, may require its optional FFmpeg support. Audacity’s guides explain opening files and FFmpeg support, the Export Audio dialog, and supported export formats.

1. Open Audacity and import the saved WhatsApp audio using File → Import → Audio, or drag the file into the project.
2. If Audacity cannot import it, install or enable its optional FFmpeg support and try again. If the problem continues, check that the source file is complete and its extension matches its actual format.
3. Trim unwanted material if needed.
4. Choose File → Export Audio, select MP3 Files, and choose a quality setting appropriate for the intended use.
5. Set the output name and location, export, then play the resulting file in a separate player.

When an online or mobile converter makes sense

An online converter can be convenient for one short, non-sensitive recording when you do not want to install software. It requires uploading the audio to a third party, and services may have size or duration limits, queues, ads, or signup prompts. Do not upload confidential conversations, interviews, medical recordings, legal evidence, or business discussions unless you have verified that the service is appropriate for that material. Review its current privacy policy; do not assume a service deletes uploads immediately.

On a phone, use the built-in share and save workflow, then choose a reputable converter that processes files locally where possible. App names, permissions, and subscription screens change. Avoid granting access to contacts, messages, photos, or cloud storage unless the conversion genuinely requires it. For sensitive recordings, prefer local desktop conversion.

Fix common conversion problems

Renaming the extension did not work

Changing .opus to .mp3 changes only the filename. Transcode it with FFmpeg or export it as MP3 from Audacity.

The file has no extension or the converter cannot open it

Check the file’s properties or inspect it with ffprobe; do not guess from its WhatsApp origin. If Audacity reports an unsupported format, its FFmpeg support may be missing or the file may be incomplete. Try FFmpeg, or download or export the recording again. Repeatedly renaming the file does not identify or repair its contents.

The converted MP3 is silent

The source may be damaged, the wrong stream may have been selected, or the container may be unexpected. Explicitly map the first audio stream:

ffmpeg -i input.opus -map 0:a:0 -vn -codec:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

If the output is still silent, inspect the source with ffprobe and try exporting or downloading the WhatsApp recording again.

The MP3 is larger than the original

A speech-optimized Opus file can be smaller than a higher-bitrate MP3. File size by itself does not show that the conversion improved sound quality.

I cannot find the file on Android

• Try WhatsApp’s Share or Forward option and save to a known folder.
• Check Downloads and Documents in the Files app.
• Search for .opus, .ogg, or recently modified audio files.
• Check the WhatsApp media folder if your file manager permits access, or download the recording through WhatsApp Web or desktop.

The voice note disappeared

Whether it can be recovered depends on whether the conversation or media remains available and whether a relevant WhatsApp or device backup exists. A backup is not guaranteed to expose deleted audio as a browsable MP3. If the recording matters, check the available backups before restoring or changing devices.

A batch conversion overwrote or duplicated files

Run batch commands on a copy of the media folder. Check that each output name is unique and that the original files remain intact, particularly if timestamps or filenames matter to your archive.
