To convert a rendered HTML page to PNG, open it in your browser, install a reputable screenshot extension, choose full-page or visible-area capture, select PNG, and save the image. Full-page mode includes content below the viewport; visible-area mode captures only what is currently on screen. This works on pages the browser can render, rather than being a universal converter for every local HTML file and asset combination.
What a browser extension actually converts
A screenshot extension captures the browser’s rendered result: text, CSS, images, fonts, and interactive state as they appear in a tab. It does not generally parse an HTML file independently and reconstruct every linked asset in every context. If a local file, authenticated application, or script has not rendered correctly, the PNG will reflect that incomplete state.
Before capturing, wait for the page content you need to appear. Expand accordions, dismiss unwanted dialogs, sign in if appropriate, and allow lazy-loaded images to load. Keep the tab at the zoom level and scroll position that produce the layout you want.
Step-by-step: save HTML as a PNG
- Open the rendered page. Navigate to the web page in a normal Chrome or Firefox tab. For a local document, open the HTML file in the browser and confirm that its styles and images load.
- Choose an extension. Use the browser’s official add-on store. Read the current listing, requested permissions, privacy disclosure, supported browser versions, and any export limits before installing.
- Prepare the page. Wait for network content and lazy images. Stop animations where practical, close temporary menus, and note any fixed cookie banners, chat bubbles, or headers that could cover content.
- Open the extension. Use its toolbar icon or browser extensions menu. Choose Full page when you need content below the viewport, or Visible area for the current screen. Some extensions also provide selected-region or element capture.
- Select PNG. PNG is lossless and is useful for text, interfaces, diagrams, and fine detail. If the extension offers JPEG, use it when a smaller photographic file matters more than lossless text edges.
- Save and inspect. Download the image, then open it in an image viewer. Check the top, bottom, text sharpness, images, overlays, and any horizontally or internally scrolling sections. Retry after loading missing content or changing the capture mode if necessary.
Full-page, visible-area, region, and element capture
Full-page capture
The extension scrolls through the document and assembles one tall image. It is the right choice for an article, documentation page, receipt, or landing page that extends below the screen. Very long pages can produce large PNGs, and sticky headers may appear repeatedly or cover content depending on the extension and page implementation.
Visible-area capture
This captures only the current viewport. Use it for a dashboard state, a single dialog, or a presentation slide. Set the browser window size and zoom first because those directly affect the output dimensions.
#1 Best Overall
Selected region or element
Region capture lets you drag around a portion of the page. Element capture targets a page component such as a card or table. These modes avoid cropping a full-page image later, but availability and behavior vary by extension.
Nested scrolling areas
A page can contain a table, chat panel, or code block with its own scrollbar. Ordinary full-page capture may include only the visible portion of that nested area. Firefox’s Full Page Screenshot T7 listing describes automatic scrolling and a scroll mode for internally scrollable areas; treat that as a product feature, not a guarantee for every site.
Extensions you can consider
Store listings describe capabilities, not an independent reliability ranking. Recheck versions, update dates, permissions, and ratings before installation because they change.
| Extension | Browser and listed capabilities | Published listing detail |
|---|---|---|
| Page to Image | Chrome; full-page and visible-area PNG/JPEG; local processing; optional hiding of fixed overlays | Version 0.7.0, updated September 14, 2026. Its listing says settings pages, the extension store, and developer tools are blocked. |
| FireShot | Chrome; full-page, visible-area, and selected-area capture; PNG export | Version 2.1.4.18, updated May 24, 2026; listing describes an optional upgrade. |
| Full Page Screenshot T7 | Firefox; full-page and scrollable-area capture; PNG, JPG, and PDF export; local-processing disclosure | Version 1.7.1, last updated August 29, 2026. |
| GoFullPage | Chrome; listing changelog includes a Chromium URL requirement fix and improved dialogs | Changelog entry dated September 24, 2026. |
| PageSaver | Chrome; full-page, region, and element capture; PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF export | Listing accessed September 29, 2026. |
Compare extensions on browser compatibility, full-page versus visible or selected-area modes, nested-scroll handling, PNG output, permissions, local-processing claims, and export restrictions. A publisher’s statement that processing is local is not an independent audit; review the current disclosure yourself.
Why a capture may be incomplete
Browser-protected pages
Extensions cannot capture every browser surface. Page to Image specifically lists browser settings, the extension store, and developer tools as inaccessible. If the target is one of these pages, use the browser’s own screenshot or print functions where available.
Lazy loading and delayed scripts
Images and sections may load only after scrolling or after an API response. Wait until they are visible, scroll through the page once, then start full-page capture. If a site requires a login, use an extension you trust and avoid sharing sensitive pages through tools that upload captures.
Recommended Free Tools
Fixed overlays, animations, and zoom
Cookie notices, chat widgets, sticky navigation, animation, browser zoom, and responsive breakpoints can alter the result. Hide or dismiss overlays where permitted, pause motion, return zoom to the level you need, and inspect the saved PNG rather than assuming the preview is complete.
Huge or very tall pages
A tall PNG consumes memory and may be awkward to share. Capture a meaningful region, export several sections, or use PDF when pagination is more useful. PNG preserves detail but is not always the smallest format.
Privacy and permissions checklist
- Install from the browser’s official store and verify the publisher name.
- Read permissions such as access to all websites, clipboard, downloads, or local files.
- Check whether the publisher says processing is local and what data, if any, leaves the browser.
- Do not capture passwords, payment details, private customer records, or confidential source code unless your organization permits it.
- Remove the extension when you no longer need it, or restrict site access through the browser’s extension settings.
Troubleshooting
The PNG stops at the first screen
You selected visible-area mode or the extension does not support the page’s full-document layout. Reopen the extension and choose full-page. For a nested panel, select its scroll mode or capture the panel in several regions.
Rank #3
The bottom of the page is blank
Content probably loads lazily or depends on scrolling. Scroll through the page, wait for images and API results, then retry. If the page uses an infinite feed, capture only the loaded extent; an extension cannot save content that has not been delivered to the browser.

Images or fonts are missing
Check the page itself before capture. A blocked request, expired login, content-security rule, or offline asset will also be missing from the screenshot. Reload, sign in through the normal page, and wait for network activity to finish.
A cookie banner or chat bubble covers content
Dismiss it if the site allows that, or use an extension’s overlay-hiding option where available. Page to Image’s listing describes optional hiding of fixed overlays; this is not a universal feature.
The extension button does nothing
Confirm that the tab is an ordinary web page, not a browser settings page, extension store page, or developer-tools surface. Check the extension’s site-access permission, reload the tab, and try again.
Rank #4
The file is too large
Use a selected region, reduce the browser viewport, capture sections separately, or choose JPEG/WebP when lossless pixels are not required. Keep PNG for small text and diagrams where compression artifacts would hurt readability.

FAQ
Can an extension convert an HTML file without opening it?
It captures what the browser renders. Open the local file or hosted page first and verify that linked assets load; it is not a guaranteed standalone HTML-to-image parser.
Should I choose PNG or JPEG?
Choose PNG for lossless text, diagrams, and interfaces. JPEG can be smaller for photographic content but may soften fine edges.
Why can’t extensions capture browser settings?
Browsers restrict extensions from privileged internal pages, including examples such as settings, the extension store, and developer tools.
