To convert a URL or local HTML file with ExpertPDF’s ephtmltopdf.dll, configure a PdfConverter and call SavePdfFromUrlToFile(input, output). The method writes the rendered PDF to a disk path. Choose the documented WebKit or IE rendering engine only after checking how your actual page renders on the machine that will run the conversion; the API reference does not promise that every modern browser feature will match.
Convert a URL or local HTML file to a PDF
The ExpertPDF API documents PdfConverter.SavePdfFromUrlToFile(string url, string outFile) for converting a specified URL into a PDF saved at a specified disk path. Its url parameter can also be the full path to a local HTML file. The API description is: “Converts the specified URL into a PDF document and saves the rendered PDF document into the specified disk file.” (ExpertPDF API reference.)
The essential flow is:
- Create and configure a
PdfConverterusing the API and assembly available in your application. - Pass an accessible URL or the full path to an HTML file as the first argument.
- Pass the destination PDF file path as the second argument.
- Check that the resulting file exists and inspect its pages and content in a PDF viewer.
The reference confirms the method and its purpose, but does not establish a universal, version-independent initialization recipe, installation command, or support for every HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or deployment environment. Use the constructor and configuration appropriate to the installed ExpertPDF package. A conceptual call looks like this:

This is an API-shaped example, not a complete project: the reference cited here does not specify package installation, namespace imports, license setup, or all required configuration for a particular release. Verify those details against the documentation for the version you have installed before compiling.

Converting a local file
For a local HTML document, provide its full filesystem path in the input argument, for example C:reportsreport.html. Make sure the converter process can read that file and that referenced assets resolve from its location. Relative stylesheet, image, and font paths may behave differently from assets loaded by a web server, so inspect the output rather than assuming that the HTML file alone is sufficient.
Choosing the destination
The output argument is a disk path. The application needs permission to write there, and the parent directory must exist unless your application creates it first. Use a path appropriate to the service account or deployment environment, not just a path that exists on a developer workstation.
Choose the rendering engine for your host
The API reference documents WebKit and IE as HtmlToPdfElement.RenderingEngine options (ExpertPDF rendering-engine property). It describes WebKit as an internal renderer similar to Chrome and Safari; the IE option uses the IE engine from the machine. “Similar to” is not a guarantee of full modern Chromium equivalence.

| Choice | What the documentation establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WebKit | An internal renderer described as similar to Chrome and Safari. | Render your page’s CSS, fonts, images, and scripts on the actual target host; the documentation cited here does not establish full browser feature parity. |
| IE | Uses the IE engine from the machine. | Confirm the engine and required runtime are available in the deployment environment, then test output there rather than relying only on a development machine. |
The reference identifies the choices but does not provide a current compatibility matrix or controlled feature comparison. Compare them using your page and deployment conditions: required machine runtime, output fidelity, consistency between development and production, and the maintenance burden of the chosen runtime. Do not select an engine based solely on its name.
Save to a file or use a stream
SavePdfFromUrlToFile directly handles URL-or-local-file conversion into a disk file. Separately, ExpertPDF’s Document.Save references list overloads for saving a document by file path and by stream (file-path overload; stream overload). These are distinct save APIs; do not assume the URL converter call accepts a stream just because a document save overload does.
Use a direct file conversion when the required output is a named PDF on disk. If the surrounding application needs to send PDF bytes through a response or another stream-based pipeline, establish how the document object is obtained and saved in your integration, then use the documented stream overload applicable to that object. The cited references do not describe a complete URL-to-stream workflow.

Check the page before conversion
HTML-to-PDF conversion is not simply a file extension change. The converter must be able to access the input, load its dependent assets, and render the content you expect. Before relying on a result in production, inspect representative pages with the selected engine on the target machine.

Troubleshoot missing tables and other absent content
A Stack Overflow question titled “html to pdf conversion using ephtmltopdf,” asked on January 21, 2015, reports a missing table in a converted ASP.NET page. Its accepted answer suggests setting pdfConverter.PdfHeaderOptions.HtmlToPdfArea to an HtmlToPdfArea pointing at the URL (Stack Overflow discussion). This is one old user case and suggestion, not an ExpertPDF-authoritative explanation or a proven general repair. In particular, moving or selecting content as a header area should not be treated as a standard fix for a missing table in the document body.
Work through the likely causes
- Check the delivered HTML. Open or save the exact page response available to the converter. Confirm the missing table is present in the source and populated with the expected rows.
- Verify access from the conversion host. A URL that works in your browser may not resolve from the server or process performing conversion. Check network access, authentication, and whether the local path is valid for that host.
- Inspect asset paths and page state. Resolve relative CSS, image, and font references in the same context as the conversion. For dynamically generated markup, establish whether the data and rendered elements are ready at conversion time.
- Check document layout. A table may be present but clipped, scaled, or pushed across pages. Review page sizing, margins, and scaling, then inspect all PDF pages.
- Compare renderer behavior on the target machine. Test the documented engine choices with a small reproduction and the same runtime environment as production.
- Investigate header/footer configuration only when relevant. If the affected content is meant to appear in a configured header or footer area, inspect that setup. The 2015 suggestion is not evidence that body content belongs there.
These are general debugging steps, not a vendor-published troubleshooting checklist. The documentation cited here does not establish a single cause or universal fix for missing tables.

Version and deployment qualifications
The checked ExpertPDF conversion reference displays ephtmltopdf assembly version 17.0.0. That is the version shown on that documentation page; it does not establish that 17.0.0 is the latest release. The cited material also does not establish current operating-system compatibility, installation requirements, licensing terms, or support status. Check the documentation and requirements associated with the package you actually deploy before making those decisions.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF rather than integrate ExpertPDF into a .NET application, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, using the API’s supplied cURL pattern:

One-click scans. No signup required.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which verdict applied and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SavePdfFromUrlToFile accept a local HTML file?
Yes. The API reference says the input may be a URL or the full path to an HTML file on the local filesystem.
Best Value
Does WebKit mean the PDF will match current Chrome exactly?
No. The reference describes its internal WebKit renderer as similar to Chrome and Safari, but does not promise complete modern browser parity.
Is assembly version 17.0.0 the latest ephtmltopdf release?
The cited API page displays version 17.0.0, but that alone does not establish that it is the latest release.
