To convert HTML to PDF in AngularJS, wait until the view has finished rendering, select a dedicated export element, and pass that DOM node to a browser PDF library that combines DOM-to-canvas rendering with PDF generation. AngularJS supplies the rendered HTML; it is not itself a PDF engine. A representative implementation uses an exporter such as the package documented with html2PDF(node, options), with jsPDF configured for A4 output. The exact function and option names depend on the package version installed in your application.
What AngularJS does—and what creates the PDF
AngularJS templates, bindings, directives and controllers produce the page in the browser. PDF conversion is a separate step performed by one of three paths:
- Client-side DOM conversion: a JavaScript library reconstructs the selected DOM element, paints it through a canvas renderer and writes a PDF.
- Browser printing: a print-specific view and print CSS are sent through the browser’s print dialog, where the user chooses Save as PDF.
- Server-side rendering: your backend renders HTML in a controlled environment and returns a PDF.
AngularJS support officially ended in January 2022. That makes this primarily a maintenance or migration concern: pin and test the exporter, AngularJS version, browser versions and security dependencies together rather than assuming a modern package will work unchanged in a legacy application.

Use client-side conversion when a visual representation of the rendered view is sufficient and export volume is modest. Prefer printing when users need control over paper settings. Evaluate server rendering when the same document must be generated reliably without a user’s browser.

Prepare a dedicated AngularJS export view
Do not capture your entire interactive application. Create a stable element containing only the report or invoice that belongs in the PDF. Hide buttons, navigation, live widgets and transient status messages. Give the export area predictable width, background, typography and spacing.

Sanitize dynamically bound HTML
For content inserted with ng-bind-html, AngularJS documentation specifies that ngSanitize should be available as a module dependency so $sanitize can process the value. Rendering and exporting arbitrary HTML does not make that input trustworthy; validate and sanitize content at its source.

The package pattern documented for this task accepts a DOM node, sets a page format and writes a filename. Adapt the call to the exact API of the version you install; the example below is illustrative rather than a claim that every similarly named package exposes identical options.

});Load the exporter and its dependencies according to the package’s installation instructions. Some releases expose a global, while others require a module import; do not mix examples from different versions. The documented options in this pattern are the DOM node, jsPDF.format set to a4, and an output filename.
Make rendering deterministic before calling the exporter
- Set the data that the report needs.
- Allow AngularJS to complete its digest and let images and web fonts finish loading.
- Confirm that the export element has non-zero dimensions.
- Call the converter once, from a user action or controlled job.
- Open the resulting file on representative content, including long tables and missing images.
If a view is populated by an asynchronous request, invoke export from the request’s success path (or after a dedicated “ready” flag becomes true), not immediately after changing the route. A short delay alone is not a guarantee that fonts or images have loaded.
Layout, CSS and page-break preparation
DOM-to-canvas tools reconstruct supported DOM and CSS; they do not take a literal browser screenshot. Unsupported properties can look different, and a complex interactive screen rarely makes a good document.
- Give the export root a fixed or print-sized width and an opaque background.
- Use simple layout primitives for critical content; test flex, grid, filters, pseudo-elements and positioned overlays in your chosen package version.
- Keep headings with the content they introduce where the exporter supports page-break controls, but verify the result instead of relying on a complete CSS support matrix.
- Split very large reports or render only the required rows to avoid browser memory pressure.
- Use print-oriented styles or a separate export template when the screen layout contains navigation, hover states or responsive breakpoints.
Images, fonts and iframes
Cross-origin images
Browser same-origin rules apply. An image hosted on another origin can taint the canvas unless that server supplies appropriate CORS headers and the renderer is configured consistently. Symptoms include missing images, a security exception or a blank output. Host assets on the same origin where practical, configure CORS deliberately, and test authenticated image URLs.

Embedded frames
Content from a cross-origin iframe cannot be read by your page for DOM rendering. Capture the frame’s source separately (with permission), replace it with a server-provided representation, or use a server-side workflow that is authorized to access the content. Do not attempt to bypass the browser’s origin policy.
Fonts and loading state
A PDF generated before a web font has loaded can use fallback metrics and cause different wrapping. Preload required fonts, wait for the report’s readiness condition, and compare output on a cold load as well as a cached load.
Browser print-to-PDF as an alternative
A print-specific route can be simpler when the desired result is a paper document and users are comfortable choosing Save as PDF. Render the report in a clean view, hide controls in print styles, set margins and page dimensions, then invoke the browser’s print UI from a button. Browser print behavior and available CSS vary by browser, so validate the deployed browser set and provide user instructions for headers, footers and paper size. This path generally preserves selectable text better than a canvas-based image, while giving the user control rather than producing a silent download.

Server-side rendering: when to evaluate it
Consider a backend renderer when invoices, statements or batch exports must be generated without a user’s tab, when output consistency matters across browsers, or when the source data must remain on your servers. Before choosing a service or library, establish whether it supports your required fonts, page breaks, authentication, charts, selectable text and document size. Also define retention, privacy and timeout policies. No single server renderer is universally compatible with an AngularJS screen; a dedicated, print-oriented HTML template usually produces more predictable output than submitting the live application shell.

Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is blank
Check that the selector resolves, has dimensions and contains data at the moment of capture. Export after the final AngularJS digest and after images load. Also check for a canvas security exception caused by a cross-origin image.
Images are missing
Verify image URLs, authentication and CORS response headers. Replace inaccessible images with same-origin copies or a server-generated asset. An iframe’s contents cannot be imported when it is cross-origin.
CSS looks wrong
Remember that the renderer reconstructs supported styles rather than photographing the browser. Simplify critical layout, remove visual effects that are not essential, and create an export-only stylesheet. Compare the package version’s documented API with your call.

Text wraps or pages break unexpectedly
Wait for fonts, set a predictable export width and test long content. Avoid capturing a responsive container whose width changes with the viewport. If exact pagination is essential, evaluate print CSS or a server renderer.
Export freezes or the tab runs out of memory
Reduce image dimensions, split very large documents, remove off-screen content and avoid exporting the whole application shell. Measure representative worst-case reports in the browsers you support.
Dynamic HTML is unsafe or empty
Ensure ngSanitize is included for ng-bind-html, sanitize untrusted input and verify that the model contains the expected value before conversion.
Production checklist
- Pin compatible AngularJS, exporter and browser versions.
- Use a dedicated export template and stable selector.
- Wait for AngularJS rendering, images and fonts.
- Test same-origin, CORS-protected and missing assets.
- Test short and very long reports, including tables spanning pages.
- Decide whether output must contain selectable text.
- Record failures and let users retry without duplicating server-side work.
- Review sensitive data handling if URLs or HTML leave the browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AngularJS itself generate a PDF?
No. AngularJS renders the view; a browser library, print flow or server-side renderer performs PDF creation.
Can I export an iframe inside the AngularJS view?
Only same-origin iframe content can be read by the page. Cross-origin content requires a separately authorized capture or replacement representation.
Is a DOM-to-canvas PDF a true screenshot?
No. It reconstructs supported DOM and CSS through a canvas, so unsupported styles and cross-origin assets can differ from the browser view.
