To convert HTML into an image, choose based on where the capture runs and how faithfully it must match a browser. For a quick client-side image of a supported DOM element, use html2canvas and export its canvas as PNG. For automated, server-side, full-page, or high-fidelity screenshots, use a real browser controlled by Playwright or Puppeteer. html2canvas reconstructs an image from DOM information; it does not photograph the browser’s rendered pixels, so unsupported CSS and cross-origin assets can change the result.

Choose the right HTML-to-image method

HTML-to-image can mean capturing one component, a visible viewport, a whole page, or supplied markup and styles. The best route depends on the target and where you can run code:

Need Good fit Important distinction
Let a visitor download a rendered element from the page they are viewing html2canvas Creates a canvas reconstruction from DOM data; CSS support and browser security restrictions apply.
Automate captures on a server or in a test/build workflow Playwright or Puppeteer Controls a browser and captures its rendered page or a selected element.
Capture a full page, crop, or configure output format and quality Playwright or Puppeteer Both document page screenshots; Puppeteer also documents clipping and format-specific quality options.
Capture supplied HTML without building and operating a browser workflow A screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo Use a service when you want to make a request rather than install and manage browser automation.

These are capability-based choices, not benchmark claims. If pixel fidelity to the browser matters, start with browser automation or a browser screenshot service, not a DOM reconstruction library.

Capture an element in the browser with html2canvas

html2canvas walks the DOM and renders a representation into a canvas. It is useful when the page itself needs a simple “download this card” feature and the element uses CSS and assets the library supports. Its output can differ from what the browser visibly rendered.

Install and capture

Install the package in the application that owns the page:

npm install html2canvas

Then pass the element you want to capture to html2canvas, export the result as a PNG data URL, and attach it to a download link:

import html2canvas from 'html2canvas';

async function downloadElementAsPng(element) {
  const canvas = await html2canvas(element);
  const link = document.createElement('a');
  link.download = 'capture.png';
  link.href = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
  link.click();
}

downloadElementAsPng(document.querySelector('#receipt'));

Replace #receipt with a selector for the element in your page. Run this in a browser after the element has been rendered and its content is ready. The example exports the generated canvas as PNG; it does not produce a browser-native screenshot.

What html2canvas can and cannot promise

html2canvas does not simply copy screen pixels. It interprets DOM information and draws a new image. CSS properties must be implemented by the project, so unsupported styles can be absent or rendered differently. Consult the project documentation for its operating model and supported features before relying on a particular design.

It is therefore a reasonable choice for a controlled component with predictable styling, but a poor fit when the image must exactly match a complex page, capture browser-only rendering, or run as a server-side job. The project’s FAQ recommends headless-browser tooling such as Playwright or Puppeteer for server-side screenshot generation.

Take a real-browser screenshot with Playwright

Playwright drives a browser and can capture a page, a full page, or a selected element, with documented PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. This example opens a URL and saves a full-page PNG. Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project as described in the installation guide.

npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

For a component rather than the whole page, locate it and call screenshot on the locator:

await page.locator('#receipt').screenshot({ path: 'receipt.png' });

For the visible viewport only, omit fullPage. Use type: 'jpeg' or type: 'webp' where appropriate for your workflow; Playwright documents supported formats and scale options in its screenshot guide.

Make capture timing deliberate

A screenshot records the state at capture time. If a page loads data after navigation, wait for the relevant element or condition before capturing instead of assuming navigation alone means the page is ready:

await page.goto('https://example.com/report');
await page.locator('#report-ready').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });

When network traffic never becomes idle because of analytics, polling, or streaming, a selector that indicates the page is ready is often a more targeted wait. For animated or dynamically changing content, consider whether the capture should wait for a stable state; otherwise repeated captures may differ.

Use Puppeteer for browser automation

Puppeteer also controls a browser for page screenshots. Install the package, then navigate and call page.screenshot. This runnable Node.js example saves a full-page PNG:

npm install puppeteer
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

To capture one element, use its element handle:

const element = await page.$('#receipt');
if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'receipt.png' });

Puppeteer’s screenshot options document full-page capture, clipping, image type and quality where supported, and transparent-background capture. Use the ScreenshotOptions reference for the precise option names and constraints for your installed Puppeteer version.

Decide between a DOM reconstruction and browser automation

  • Where it runs: html2canvas runs in the user’s browser and works on that page’s DOM. Playwright and Puppeteer are typically used in automated browser workflows, including server-side jobs.
  • What it captures: html2canvas targets DOM content it can interpret. Browser automation can capture the visible page, the full page, or a specific element.
  • Rendering fidelity: html2canvas may differ from the actual rendered page when CSS is unsupported. A real-browser screenshot is the better fit when the output should reflect browser rendering.
  • External assets: images from other origins can be restricted by browser security rules, and html2canvas cannot read cross-origin iframe contents. With browser automation, the browser can render content it can access, but authentication, network access, and site restrictions still affect what appears.
  • Output control: choose the tool and options around the required format, scale, crop, transparency, and whether the full page or only a region is needed.

Handle cross-origin images, iframes, and CORS

Browser security can prevent a canvas from being exported if it includes an image from another origin without the required permission. The browser may mark the canvas as tainted, causing an error when code tries to read or export it. html2canvas’s FAQ describes two common approaches: the image server must allow the origin through an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header, or the asset can be served through a same-origin proxy.

An option that asks html2canvas to use CORS does not grant permission by itself. If the remote server does not send the required header, the browser still blocks access. Cross-origin iframe contents are also inaccessible to html2canvas; a page cannot use the library to bypass the browser’s same-origin security boundary.

Prevent blank, clipped, or inconsistent output

Large capture dimensions

Canvas size and area limits vary by browser, platform, and available resources. An oversized canvas may be blank or partial rather than failing with a clear error. The html2canvas FAQ warns against treating any single maximum pixel figure as a universal guarantee. For very long pages, try capturing smaller sections, lowering scale, or using a browser screenshot workflow designed around full-page capture.

Unsupported CSS or missing fonts

If shadows, filters, blend modes, or other styling differs, check whether html2canvas implements the relevant CSS property. A library-based reconstruction cannot guarantee full CSS compatibility. For browser automation, make sure the page has loaded its stylesheets, fonts, and data before the screenshot is taken.

Content that appears after capture

Lazy-loaded images, client-side data, and animations may not be ready at the moment of capture. In Playwright or Puppeteer, wait for the target content or a known ready state before taking the image. If a full-page capture is missing content that only loads on scroll, the page may need to be scrolled or otherwise prompted to load it before capture.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot from a script, a website screenshot API can return an image without requiring you to install and operate a browser. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; its capture options include full-page output with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, image formats, custom CSS and JavaScript, and waits for a selector, delay, or network idle. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation for usage and parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF according to the request options. Cookie banners and consent overlays, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common errors and fixes

  • Canvas export throws a security error: identify cross-origin images in the target. Arrange for the asset host to return the required CORS header or serve the asset through a same-origin proxy; a client-side option cannot override a server’s policy.
  • An iframe is missing in html2canvas: if it is cross-origin, its content cannot be read by the library. Capture the iframe separately in an authorized workflow, or change the integration so the content is available from the same origin.
  • The image looks unlike the page: confirm that the styles and assets are supported by html2canvas. Use Playwright or Puppeteer when actual browser rendering is the requirement.
  • The result is blank or truncated: reduce capture dimensions or scale and split an excessively large capture into smaller sections. Canvas limits vary across environments.
  • The screenshot misses content: wait for a page-specific ready selector or data state before capture, and ensure lazy-loaded content has been triggered.
  • The automation script hangs or never finishes: navigation may be waiting for a network-idle condition that a page with persistent requests never reaches. Wait for a meaningful selector or page state instead.
  • The selected element is not found: check that the selector matches the rendered DOM and that the element exists after navigation and application rendering.

Performance, reliability, and output considerations

Capture cost in time and resources depends on the page, assets, capture area, browser, and workflow; the documentation cited here does not establish a universal speed ranking for these tools. Keep browser-based automation economical by reusing a browser process for a batch of captures when appropriate, closing pages and browsers when finished, and capturing only the required region instead of a huge page when full-page output is unnecessary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an HTML string rather than a live webpage?

Yes. A browser-based workflow can load HTML into a page and capture it after applying the needed styles and assets. For a service-based flow, ScreenshotNeo also supports HTML/CSS-to-image requests; consult its documentation for the required request parameters.

Which method should I use for a social card or invoice download?

If the card or invoice is a controlled DOM element in the visitor’s browser and its design uses supported CSS, html2canvas can provide a convenient client-side download. If visual fidelity is critical or the same output must be generated reliably on a server, use a real-browser screenshot workflow.

Can I save a transparent image?

Puppeteer documents transparent-background capture options, and ScreenshotNeo supports transparent backgrounds. The page background and format must also be configured so transparency is preserved in the resulting file.
