For a server-side PDF from an HTML file, use DevExpress Office File API’s RichEditDocumentServer: load the document, then call ExportToPdf. The key production detail is asset resolution: if the HTML refers to external CSS or images, configure a custom IUriProvider so the server-side converter can locate them. For HTML already inside a RichEdit or ASPxHtmlEditor control, use that control’s export path instead; for a structured XtraReport, use Reporting’s PDF export.
Choose the DevExpress path that matches your source
“Convert HTML to PDF with DevExpress” can mean several different things. The best API depends on whether you have an HTML file, content in an editor, or a report definition. Choosing by source type avoids trying to use an editor-specific export method as a general-purpose HTML converter.
| Source content | DevExpress path | Typical execution |
|---|---|---|
| An HTML file to convert in a job or service | Office File API: RichEditDocumentServer.LoadDocument and ExportToPdf |
Server-side |
| Content being edited in RichEdit | RichEdit client PDF export or configured server export | Browser or server, depending on configuration |
| Content in an ASPxHtmlEditor | HtmlEditorExportFormat.Pdf or the client PDF export command |
Web Forms control workflow |
A structured XtraReport |
Reporting PDF export, such as ExportToPdf or ExportToPdfAsync |
Reporting application workflow |
For a background job, API endpoint, or conversion of a file on the server, the Office File API route is the most direct documented workflow. The other options are useful when the source already belongs to the corresponding DevExpress control or reporting model.

using DevExpress.XtraRichEdit;
using var server = new RichEditDocumentServer();
server.LoadDocument("Documents/TextWithImages.htm");
server.ExportToPdf("Document_PDF.pdf");
The paths are examples: replace the input and output names with paths appropriate to your application. In a service, validate the input path and ensure the process can read the HTML and write the destination PDF. If an API accepts a user-supplied path or URL, validate it rather than passing untrusted input directly to file or network access.
External CSS and images
HTML may refer to stylesheets or images by URI. The converter runs in your application process, so those resources must be resolvable and reachable from that environment; access a browser has does not automatically mean the server can access it. DevExpress recommends a custom descendant of IUriProvider when external CSS or image URIs need handling. Override CreateCssUri or CreateImageUri as appropriate to provide the resource locations. See the DevExpress HTML-to-PDF guidance.
For a repeatable conversion pipeline, keep asset handling explicit: verify that linked resources are available to the process, decide how relative paths resolve, and test templates with the same fonts and assets used in production. A PDF can be generated successfully while still differing from the intended layout if a stylesheet, image, or font is missing.

HTML-to-PDF conversion is not a promise of pixel-identical browser rendering. Check page breaks, font availability, image sizing, and print-specific CSS against representative input documents. If page dimensions or orientation matter, include those checks in the application’s acceptance tests rather than relying on a single short sample.

Export PDF from RichEdit in an ASP.NET Core application
If the user is already editing a document in the RichEdit client, its exportToPdf method is usually more appropriate than reloading an unrelated HTML file through the server API. RichEdit exposes a PdfExporting event. Set e.handled = true to handle PDF generation in the browser; otherwise configure ExportUrl for server-side handling of the exported data. Consult the DevExpress ASP.NET Core RichEdit export documentation for the configuration used by your control version.
A client-side call can look like this:
richEdit.exportToPdf("document", {
modifyPdfDocument: function (pdfDocument) {
// Optional PDFKit post-processing.
}
});
Client PDF export has dependencies beyond this call. DevExpress documents the need to provide available fonts and register pdfkit. Its PDF settings API also includes blobStream, pdfDocument, and pdfKitScriptUrl, plus convertImageToCompatibleFormat for converting images to JPEG or PNG when needed. Use the PDF export settings reference to match your application setup.
For downloading the generated file, RichEdit provides the downloadPdf helper. Callbacks can modify the PDF document or its pages before it is delivered. This path is suited to an edit-and-download interaction; a scheduled server conversion of an HTML file has a different source and should use the server workflow above.
Export PDF from ASPxHtmlEditor in Web Forms
For content held by the ASPxHtmlEditor control in a Web Forms application, use the editor’s PDF export API rather than treating the control method as a general converter for arbitrary files:

ASPxHtmlEditor1.Export(HtmlEditorExportFormat.Pdf, "MyFile");
The control can export to a stream or return a downloadable file. The client export command can also request PDF using Pdf. See ASPxHtmlEditor.Export documentation for the API details.
This is a focused option for editor content in Web Forms. It is not the general-purpose replacement for converting arbitrary HTML files in a modern ASP.NET Core service.
Export an XtraReport to PDF
If the input is a structured DevExpress XtraReport, use DevExpress Reporting’s PDF export methods, including ExportToPdf or ExportToPdfAsync. Reporting supports exporting from code and report-viewing workflows across its supported desktop and web platforms. See DevExpress Reporting PDF export. This is the appropriate route when report-specific layout, data binding, and viewer behavior are part of the job; it is not a substitute for loading a standalone HTML file.

Print mode is not the same as HTML-to-PDF conversion
RichEdit offers HTML and PDF print modes. HTML mode opens rendered markup in a browser tab and depends on the browser’s print settings. PDF mode generates a PDF first. DevExpress documents page-format and section-orientation limitations for HTML mode, so if those settings matter, review the RichEdit print documentation and validate the actual output. Choose PDF mode when the application needs a generated PDF rather than a browser print dialog.

Troubleshoot common conversion problems
- PDF is created, but styles are missing: Check that external CSS URIs resolve in the server environment. Implement an
IUriProviderdescendant and overrideCreateCssUriwhen required. - Images are absent: Confirm that image URIs can be reached by the process and that relative references resolve as intended. Use
CreateImageUriin a custom provider when needed. - Client-side RichEdit export fails before producing a file: Check that pdfkit is registered and that the PDF settings include the required stream/document setup. Verify that the browser has the available fonts expected by the export path.
- An image prevents client PDF export: Review the PDF settings’
convertImageToCompatibleFormatoption to convert the image to JPEG or PNG where appropriate. - The PDF layout differs from browser output: Test fonts, pagination, page breaks, and print CSS with real templates. Do not assume HTML print mode and generated PDF mode share identical layout behavior.
- Export works in a control but not for a standalone HTML file: Confirm that the chosen route matches the source. ASPxHtmlEditor exports its editor content; an arbitrary server-side HTML file belongs on the
RichEditDocumentServerpath.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The documented APIs establish the conversion routes and dependencies, but they do not establish universal throughput, memory use, or fidelity benchmarks. For a service, measure representative document sizes and complexity in the deployment environment. Consider queueing long conversions, separating input validation from conversion, and cleaning up temporary files after delivery.
Reliability depends on treating resources as inputs to the conversion, not assumptions: check that the service can access CSS, images, and fonts; detect failed conversions; and test layouts after template or dependency changes. Do not infer rendering quality from a successful return alone.
DevExpress product pricing and licensing details are not included here; check the terms that apply to your edition and deployment before production use. The choice among server conversion, client export, Web Forms editor export, and Reporting should be based on the existing content model and required execution location, not on presumed speed or output equivalence.

If your real goal is a visual capture of a live web page, rather than a document produced through a DevExpress editor or report, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This is a page-capture alternative, not a replacement for DevExpress document conversion when you need a PDF from an HTML file or structured report.
