First decide what you mean by “email to image.” To make a picture of the whole message as it appears on screen, take a screenshot or export/print the message to PDF and convert the PDF to an image. To save a picture attached to the email, download the attachment itself. These are different jobs, and the official Outlook, Gmail, and Apple Mail instructions reviewed document saving, printing, or PDF export—not a universal button that exports a rendered email directly as PNG or JPEG.
Choose the right method
| Your goal | Best starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a short email exactly as it appears on your screen | Take a device screenshot while the message is open | A screenshot captures only the visible screen area. Scroll or take more than one capture if the message is longer. |
| Capture a long message in a printable layout | Print or export the message to PDF, then convert the PDF page or pages to PNG or JPEG | The email client’s PDF step is documented for the clients below; the conversion from PDF to image depends on your device or chosen software. |
| Save a photo or other image that arrived as an attachment | Download or save the attachment | This preserves the attached image file rather than making a picture of the email layout. |
If selectable text and a compact file matter more than an image, keep the PDF instead. A raster image turns text and layout into pixels. Whichever route you choose, inspect the result for clipped headers, missing content, multiple pages, and text that is too small to read.
Make an image of the whole email
Option 1: Take a screenshot
- Open the message in your email app or browser.
- Show the portion you need, including the sender, date, subject, and relevant message content if those details matter.
- Use your device’s screenshot shortcut or screenshot feature.
- For a long message, scroll and capture additional sections, or use the PDF route below if you need a continuous printable record.
- Open the screenshot and check that the text is legible and nothing important is cut off.
This is the quickest approach for content that fits on screen. It records the displayed view, not necessarily the entire message. The exact screenshot controls vary by device, so use the controls for your operating system rather than assuming one shortcut applies everywhere.
Option 2: Print or export to PDF, then convert
- Open the email and choose the client’s print or PDF export option.
- Save the resulting PDF to your device. If the message spans several pages, confirm that the PDF includes all of them.
- Use a PDF-to-image feature available on your device or software to export the page or pages as PNG or JPEG.
- Review the image output at full size. Check page breaks, small text, and whether the message header and attachments you need are included.
The first two steps depend on the mail client and edition. The last step is not a universal email-client function: available menus and output settings depend on the device and PDF software. If you tell someone else how to reproduce the result, name the device and conversion app you used.
#1 Best Overall
Outlook: save or print a message
Microsoft’s support instructions cover New Outlook, Classic Outlook, and Outlook on the web, with save formats varying by version. They document saving messages as files and printing to PDF, but do not describe direct whole-message image export. Open the message and use its available save or print controls; select a PDF destination when printing if your edition offers one. Then convert the saved PDF to an image using software on your device.
Because Outlook’s documented save formats and controls differ among editions, do not assume a menu name or file type from one version will match another. If you cannot find a PDF choice, check whether your Outlook edition exposes printing through the message menu or the operating system’s print dialog.
Gmail: print a message or conversation
Google documents printing from Gmail on a computer, both for a single message and for a conversation. Open the message or conversation and choose the print action, then save or print to PDF through the available print destination. Convert the resulting PDF with a tool on your device if you specifically need PNG or JPEG. Gmail also documents downloading an individual message as an EML file, but EML is a message file, not an image of the rendered email.
Important exception: Google warns that Gmail confidential mode can prevent printing message text and attachments. If the print route is unavailable for a confidential message, do not assume a screenshot or other capture method will bypass its restrictions; respect the sender’s controls.
Rank #3
Apple Mail on Mac: export the message as PDF
Apple’s Mail for Mac guide documents exporting a message as a PDF through File > Export as PDF. After exporting, use a PDF-to-image feature on your Mac or another device if you need PNG or JPEG. The cited Mail guide does not document direct export of the rendered message to an image.
Save an image attached to an email
If the goal is the original photograph or graphic, do not screenshot the email. Open the attachment and use the mail app’s download or save control. Gmail Help documents opening and downloading attachments; Apple’s iPhone Mail guide documents saving an image attachment to Photos. The exact control depends on the app and device, so check that the saved file opens as an image and is the attachment you intended to keep.
Or skip the browser setup
For a message that is already rendered at a web-accessible URL you are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. This is not a way to bypass a private inbox login or confidential-mode restrictions: a private email page may require authorized access, and you should not send credentials or message content to a service unless that is appropriate for your use. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; see the ScreenshotNeo site and API documentation before using it with sensitive content.

Troubleshooting and quality checks
- The screenshot shows only part of the message: it captures the visible screen area. Scroll and make additional captures, or use the client’s print/PDF route and convert the resulting pages.
- The PDF option is missing: the documented controls vary by email-client edition and device. Check the message menu and system print dialog; do not assume every version has identical labels.
- Gmail will not print the message: confidential mode can prevent printing message text and attachments. Follow the restriction rather than trying to defeat it.
- The converted image is hard to read: inspect at full size. A multi-page PDF may need separate images for each page; avoid shrinking a long message into one image if that makes its text illegible.
- An attachment is missing from the image: printing or screenshotting the message layout is not the same as downloading an attachment. Save the attachment separately if you need its original file.
- A webpage screenshot shows a sign-in page instead of the email: the URL is not rendering the authorized message in the capture context. Use the email client’s own screenshot or PDF workflow unless you have an appropriate, authorized way to make that page available.
Privacy and sharing
An email image can expose more than the main paragraph: sender and recipient addresses, timestamps, subject lines, quoted history, signatures, and attachment previews may all be visible. Review the entire image before sharing it, and crop or redact sensitive details using a suitable local editor when needed. The official client instructions cited here do not establish cross-device image dimensions, output quality, or the privacy practices of third-party PDF converters; choose conversion software accordingly and avoid uploading confidential mail to a service without assessing whether that is acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an email directly to PNG or JPEG in Gmail?
The Gmail Help instructions reviewed document printing a message or conversation and downloading an individual message as EML, not direct export of the rendered email to PNG or JPEG.
Does saving an email as EML make it an image?
No. EML is a message file. To create an image of the rendered email, use a screenshot or print/export to PDF and convert the PDF.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I convert an email attachment and the email itself at the same time?
They are separate outputs: capture or export the rendered message for an image of the email, and save the attachment to preserve its original image file.
