You can make a high-quality MP4 from a DVD, but a standard MP4 conversion is not bit-for-bit lossless: it re-encodes the video. For a convenient, widely playable copy, use HandBrake with H.264 video, AAC audio, and source-matched settings. For exact preservation, keep the DVD files or an ISO; for a more flexible, untranscoded copy, keep an MKV made with MakeMKV.
Choose the right DVD-to-MP4 workflow

HandBrake supports DVD sources but does not defeat or circumvent copy protection. Its source-format documentation explains its input support and limitations. Use these workflows only where you have the legal right to copy the disc; copyright, format-shifting, and circumvention rules vary by country and circumstances.
What “original quality” means
- Bit-for-bit preservation: Keep the DVD itself, its files, or an ISO. This is the right choice if exact preservation matters.
- Untranscoded extraction: MakeMKV places the selected DVD streams in an MKV container without re-encoding them. The resulting file retains the source streams and selected tracks, but it is not the same as a full DVD image with menus.
- High-quality MP4: HandBrake encodes the DVD video again, usually to H.264. A careful encode can retain the source’s effective detail very well, but its compressed data is not identical to the DVD.
- Container change only: A stream-copy remux changes the wrapper without re-encoding compatible streams. It does not automatically make DVD video, audio, subtitles, and chapters work reliably in MP4.
Do not upscale a DVD to 1080p expecting new detail. DVD material is commonly NTSC or PAL, may be interlaced or anamorphic, and does not always correspond to a simple progressive “480p” or “576p” file. Keep the source dimensions and intended display aspect ratio unless a specific playback workflow requires a change.
What you need
- A readable DVD and an internal or USB DVD drive.
- Free space for the output. If extracting first, allow several gigabytes: MakeMKV estimates a typical DVD movie may need about 6 GB during conversion.
- HandBrake, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, for the MP4 encode.
- MakeMKV if you need an intermediate MKV or HandBrake struggles to scan a readable disc.
Interface labels can change between software releases. Use the closest equivalent if a button or setting has moved.

Recommended HandBrake settings for DVD to MP4
Start with a quality-oriented preset rather than choosing a large bitrate by guesswork. HandBrake’s official presets include MP4/H.264 options for standard-definition sources and make trade-offs between speed, quality, and file size.

H.265/HEVC can make smaller files at similar quality in many cases, but it may encode more slowly and can be less compatible. AV1 is usually unnecessary for a DVD conversion. Choose MP4 for general playback; MKV is often preferable when retaining multiple tracks and subtitles matters more than universal device support.
Convert a readable, unprotected DVD directly in HandBrake
- Install HandBrake from its official site, insert the DVD, and open HandBrake.
- Select Open Source, then select the optical disc or a DVD folder. Wait for the scan to finish.
- Choose the title. Compare runtime, preview, chapters, and audio language; do not assume the longest title is correct. Episodic discs may contain many separate episode titles.
- Choose an MP4 preset suited to standard-definition material, then confirm the container is MP4 and the video encoder is H.264.
- In the video settings, select Same as Source for frame rate and use Constant Quality, starting around RF 18–20. Select constant frame rate if your target device or editing software requires it.
- Review Dimensions. Keep the source aspect ratio and automatic cropping unless the crop removes real picture content. Do not upscale.
- Preview a moving scene. If it shows comb-like horizontal lines, check the Filters settings and try an appropriate decomb or deinterlace option. Do not apply deinterlacing automatically to every DVD.
- Choose the correct audio and subtitle tracks. Decide whether subtitles should remain selectable or be burned into the picture.
- Set the destination filename and folder. Encode a short preview or the first chapter, if available, and check it before starting the full title.
- Play the completed file and verify its duration, picture shape, sound, subtitles, and motion before deleting any temporary files.
For a quality comparison, inspect a short sample at normal playback size. A paused frame alone can make interlacing, motion, and scaling problems hard to judge.
If HandBrake cannot read the disc: MakeMKV, then HandBrake
Try this two-stage route if HandBrake fails to scan a readable disc, the DVD has an unusual title structure, or you want to preserve track options before making an MP4. MakeMKV says it preserves selected video and audio tracks, chapters, and metadata without transcoding the video; see its product information. Its DVD conversion is described as free on its site, though licensing and availability can change.
- Install MakeMKV from its official download page, insert the DVD, and open the disc.
- Inspect the titles and select the intended feature or episode, plus the audio and subtitle tracks you want. Runtime, chapter count, and preview can help distinguish the main title from extras or duplicates.
- Choose a destination with sufficient free space and start the extraction. The resulting MKV is an intermediate copy, not a re-encoded MP4.
- Open that MKV in HandBrake. Set MP4, H.264, the source frame rate, and the desired audio/subtitle options, then encode using the settings above.
- Keep the MKV if you may want to make another encode later, preserve alternate tracks, or retain the untranscoded streams.
This does not guarantee that every protected, damaged, or unusual DVD will be readable. HandBrake explicitly does not bypass copy protection, and no tool can promise a successful extraction from every disc.

Optional FFmpeg commands
For users comfortable with a terminal, this command re-encodes an MKV to an H.264/AAC MP4:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 18
-c:a aac -b:a 192k
output.mp4-crf 18 is a quality-oriented starting point, not a lossless guarantee. -preset slow trades encoding time for compression efficiency. The mapping selects the first video stream and available audio streams; it does not automatically preserve every subtitle, alternate stream, or chapter in a way every MP4 player supports.

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4This succeeds only when the streams and metadata are suitable for MP4. It may fail or produce a file with poor player support, especially when the MKV has incompatible codecs or subtitle formats. It also does not turn DVD menus into a normal standalone MP4. If compatibility matters more than avoiding a re-encode, use H.264/AAC instead. For command-line troubleshooting, check your installed build with ffmpeg -version.
Troubleshooting common problems
HandBrake will not scan or open the DVD
Possible causes include copy protection, a damaged disc, drive read errors, an unusual DVD structure, the wrong source selection, or inadequate permissions or storage. Check whether the disc plays normally, clean it, and try another drive if available. Where lawful, MakeMKV may be a useful intermediate extractor. If you get read errors, avoid repeatedly stressing the disc and retain the original untouched.

The wrong title, a trailer, or only one episode was converted
Compare each title’s runtime, chapters, preview, and audio language. A feature disc may contain extras or alternate cuts; a TV disc may have separate titles for each episode. Select each required episode deliberately rather than relying on automatic selection.

This usually indicates interlaced material being handled as progressive. Inspect motion in the preview and try a suitable decomb or deinterlace filter on a short sample. Some DVDs are progressive or telecined, so filtering everything can reduce quality unnecessarily.
The picture is stretched or has unexpected black bars
Check the source aspect ratio, anamorphic settings, automatic crop, and the player’s display settings. A 4:3 source should not be stretched to 16:9. Black bars may be intentional letterboxing encoded in the picture; confirm before cropping them away.
Audio is missing or out of sync
Confirm the selected audio track and language. If using MakeMKV, play the intermediate MKV: if it is already out of sync, the problem may be in the extraction or source; if the MKV is correct but the MP4 is not, review HandBrake’s frame-rate and audio settings. Disc read errors can also affect sound.
Subtitles disappeared
Subtitles may be separate selectable tracks, forced subtitles, image-based tracks, or text already burned into the picture. Select the required track explicitly and check whether the target player supports it. Burn subtitles in only when they must display everywhere and need not be switchable.

The MP4 is larger than expected
Constant-quality encoding produces different sizes for different content. Grain, noise, a long title, or a high-quality setting can increase the file size. First verify that you selected the right title and only the tracks you need; do not reduce quality blindly.
The result still looks poor at a high quality setting
Encoding cannot restore detail missing from the DVD. A low-resolution source, grain, compression artifacts, a poor master, incorrect aspect-ratio flags, interlacing problems, or physical damage may limit the result. A larger bitrate or an upscale will not create authentic source detail.

- Confirm the MP4 contains the intended feature or episode and its duration is plausible.
- Check the beginning, a scene near the middle, and the ending for missing sections or read glitches.
- Listen for the correct language and synchronized audio.
- Test the subtitles and chapters you need.
- Watch a moving scene for combing or judder, and confirm the image is not stretched or cropped incorrectly.
- Play the file on the intended device or in a second media player.
- Keep the DVD, ISO, or MKV if preservation or future re-encoding matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a DVD to MP4 without any quality loss?
Not with a normal H.264 MP4 encode: it re-encodes the video. Keep the DVD files or an ISO for bit-for-bit preservation, or retain an untranscoded MKV extraction if you need the original streams in a file container.
Is HandBrake enough to convert a commercial DVD?
HandBrake can encode supported, readable DVD sources but does not defeat or circumvent copy protection. For a disc it cannot scan, an intermediate MakeMKV extraction may help where lawful, but it is not guaranteed to work on every disc.

Should I use H.264 or H.265 for a DVD MP4?
H.264 is the safer general compatibility choice. H.265 can reduce file size at similar quality in many cases, but encoding may take longer and some devices do not support it as widely.

What RF should I use in HandBrake for a DVD?
RF 18–20 is a reasonable quality-first starting range for typical SD DVD material, not a universal optimum. Lower RF gives higher quality and larger files; check a short sample before encoding the full title.
Should I convert a DVD to 480p or 1080p?
Keep the DVD’s native image dimensions and aspect ratio rather than upscaling to 1080p. DVD material may be interlaced, telecined, or anamorphic, so its effective display format is not always simply progressive 480p or 576p.
Can I convert VOB files directly to MP4?
HandBrake can open supported video files and DVD sources, including many VOB-based sources. For a disc, opening the DVD or a complete DVD folder helps with title selection and track handling; encoding to MP4 still re-encodes the video.

Keep it if you may want to make a different encode later or preserve the untranscoded video and selected tracks. Delete it only if you do not need that flexibility and have verified the MP4.
Is it legal to copy a DVD?
It depends on your country, the disc, the purpose, and whether circumvention is involved. Check the rules that apply to your situation and use copying tools only where you have the legal right to do so.
