The safest desktop method is to use yt-dlp with FFmpeg—but only for videos you own, have permission to download, or are clearly licensed to reuse. YouTube does not provide a general MP3 export. YouTube Premium supports managed offline playback inside supported YouTube and YouTube Music experiences, not an ordinary MP3 file you can copy into any player.
Before converting: confirm that you are allowed to download the video
A public YouTube URL is not automatically a permission slip. Download and convert only content that you own, is in the public domain, is released under a license permitting the intended use, or whose rights holder has given you permission.
Copyright law varies by country, and exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing are fact-specific. Do not assume that a personal-use conversion is automatically lawful. YouTube’s contractual terms can also restrict downloading, reproducing, or modifying content unless YouTube expressly provides the feature or you have the necessary permission. YouTube’s developer policies separately prohibit services that let users download or separate audio tracks from videos through the API, including services that produce MP3 files. The official option: YouTube Premium offline playback
YouTube Premium can make eligible videos available offline in supported locations and devices. This is useful if your goal is listening without an internet connection inside YouTube or YouTube Music.

It is not an MP3-export feature. Offline downloads are managed for playback by the YouTube apps and generally do not appear as ordinary audio files in your gallery or file system. They cannot be treated as portable MP3 files for editing, copying to arbitrary devices, or importing into another music player. YouTube’s official offline-download help page explains how the feature works.
Choose Premium when you want official in-app offline listening, ad-free playback, or background play. Choose a local tool only when you specifically need a file and are authorized to create it.
Best desktop method for authorized content: yt-dlp and FFmpeg
yt-dlp is a free, open-source command-line downloader with standalone releases for Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD. FFmpeg performs the audio extraction and MP3 conversion. FFprobe, included with FFmpeg, helps inspect the finished file.
Use the official project pages rather than download sites that wrap tools in advertising, deceptive buttons, browser extensions, or unwanted installers.
1. Install yt-dlp
Download the appropriate current release from the official yt-dlp releases page. The project provides these standalone files:
- Windows:
yt-dlp.exe, generally the recommended standalone Windows x64 binary. - macOS:
yt-dlp_macos. - Linux/BSD:
yt-dlp.
The project’s installation guide also lists supported package-manager routes, including Homebrew, winget, Scoop, Chocolatey, APT, Snap, and Termux. Package-manager versions can lag behind upstream, so check the installed version if troubleshooting.
Verify the installation:
yt-dlp --versionOn Windows, run:
.yt-dlp.exe --versionRemove the leading space if copying that command into PowerShell.

2. Install FFmpeg and FFprobe
Install FFmpeg from the official FFmpeg site or a trusted operating-system package manager. Both ffmpeg and ffprobe should be available on your system path.
Check them with:
ffmpeg -version
ffprobe -versionIf they are installed elsewhere, you can point yt-dlp to the directory containing the binaries:
yt-dlp --ffmpeg-location "/path/to/ffmpeg" -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL"On Windows, for example:
. yt-dlp.exe --ffmpeg-location "C:pathtoffmpegbin" -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL"3. Extract the audio as MP3
Replace YOUTUBE_URL with the original YouTube video URL:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "YOUTUBE_URL"The -x option enables audio extraction, while --audio-format mp3 requests MP3 conversion. The resulting file is normally saved in the directory where you ran the command.
To use a readable filename:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" "YOUTUBE_URL"To save it in a dedicated folder:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 -P "~/Music/YouTube Audio" -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" "YOUTUBE_URL"On macOS and Linux, single or double quotes generally work. In PowerShell, double quotes are usually suitable, although unusual characters in a URL may require care. In Command Prompt, double quotes are the safest general choice.
Choosing the MP3 bitrate
Use --audio-quality to select an FFmpeg conversion setting:
# Smaller files and speech
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 128K "YOUTUBE_URL"
# General-purpose balance
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 192K "YOUTUBE_URL"
# Larger output at a high MP3 bitrate
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 320K "YOUTUBE_URL"These values describe the MP3 output target; they do not measure or improve the original YouTube source. A 320K MP3 cannot restore detail that was absent from the source or lost in earlier encoding. YouTube audio is already encoded, so converting it to MP3 adds another lossy encoding step. Exact behavior can depend on the yt-dlp version and FFmpeg encoder. The available options are documented in yt-dlp’s option reference.

When MP3 is the wrong format
MP3 is valuable mainly because it works almost everywhere. It is not automatically the highest-quality or smallest-file option. If your player accepts M4A/AAC or WebM/Opus, downloading the best available audio without conversion avoids an unnecessary re-encode:

For archiving, keep that original audio. For editing, work from the best available source and export to the format required by the final application.
Add metadata, thumbnails, and reliable filenames
To request metadata in the converted file:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --embed-metadata "YOUTUBE_URL"To optionally embed the video thumbnail as cover art:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --embed-metadata --embed-thumbnail "YOUTUBE_URL"Thumbnail embedding depends on the output format and FFmpeg support, and source metadata may be incomplete or inaccurate. A custom filename can include the uploader:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 -o "%(uploader)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "YOUTUBE_URL"If a title contains characters that cause filesystem errors, use the video ID instead:

For a playlist you are authorized to process:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --yes-playlist -o "%(playlist_title)s/%(playlist_index)03d - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"Playlists can include private, removed, age-restricted, region-limited, or unauthorized items. The command does not change your obligations regarding rights. To avoid downloading the same successful items repeatedly, use an archive file:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 --download-archive downloaded.txt "PLAYLIST_URL"yt-dlp records completed items in that file and skips them on later runs. Keep the archive somewhere you can back up if the workflow matters.

Verify the MP3 after conversion
Do not assume that a command ending without an obvious error produced a usable file. Check that:
- A file ending in
.mp3exists in the expected folder. - The duration is comparable to the source.
- The file opens in a normal media player.
- It is not a tiny HTML error page renamed with an MP3 extension.
- The audio is not silent, clipped, or truncated.
- Metadata and cover art, if requested, look reasonable.
Inspect the file with FFprobe:
ffprobe "filename.mp3"Also test it in a second media player or on the target device. A file that plays in one application is not necessarily encoded in the way every device expects.

Troubleshooting
“Postprocessing: ffmpeg not found”
yt-dlp may have downloaded the source but cannot find the tools needed for conversion. Install FFmpeg, confirm both commands work, add its bin directory to your system path, or use --ffmpeg-location with the correct directory.
yt-dlp reports an extractor or unsupported-site error
YouTube changes its delivery systems and page behavior. Update yt-dlp first:
yt-dlp -UFor a pip installation:
python3 -m pip install -U yt-dlpOn Windows with the standalone binary:
.yt-dlp.exe -UCheck the project’s official FAQ and issue tracker rather than copying commands from random websites. Package-manager builds may be older than the current upstream release.
HTTP 403, throttling, or repeated network errors
- Update yt-dlp.
- Retry using the original YouTube URL, not an expired media URL.
- Confirm that the video plays publicly in a normal browser.
- Disable an unnecessary VPN or proxy.
- Avoid rapid bulk downloading.
- Check the official FAQ and issue tracker.
Do not install an untrusted browser extension or paste unknown commands into a terminal to bypass a restriction.

The account may not be authorized, the video may be unavailable in your region, or the uploader may have removed it. Do not upload cookies, session data, or account credentials to a third-party converter. Authenticated downloads carry privacy, account-security, and terms-of-service risks. Handle them only when you are authorized and understand the security implications; they are not part of the beginner workflow.

The output is in the wrong folder
Unless you specify a destination, the file normally goes to the current working directory. Use -P with an absolute path:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 -P "/absolute/path/to/output" "YOUTUBE_URL"The filename fails
Some video titles contain characters that a filesystem cannot use. Replace the title template with %(id)s.%(ext)s, then rename the file manually if needed.
The audio sounds poor
The source may be low quality, already compressed, clipped, noisy, or limited by the available stream. Re-encoding at 320K cannot recreate missing information. Use yt-dlp -F "YOUTUBE_URL" to inspect available formats, keep the best source when possible, and avoid repeated conversions.
It is a live stream or premiere
Live streams may not yet have a complete archive, can end unexpectedly, or can expose different formats from ordinary videos. Do not expect every live stream to produce a complete, clean MP3.
Mobile devices: what to expect
For Android, the yt-dlp installation documentation lists Termux as an advanced route, with FFmpeg available as an optional component. It requires command-line setup and is less predictable than a desktop workflow.
On iPhone and iPad, avoid dubious profile installations, browser download sites, and apps requesting unnecessary permissions. If your goal is simply offline listening, YouTube Premium’s in-app playback is the safer official route. If you need a portable MP3, create it on a trusted desktop from content you are authorized to use, then transfer the file normally.
Why online YouTube-to-MP3 websites are a poor default
Online converters can be convenient, but their safety and compliance cannot be assumed. Common risks include deceptive download buttons, aggressive advertising, unwanted extensions, malware, collection of URLs or IP addresses, and unclear handling of submitted links. They may also fail unpredictably with private or account-protected content.

A local yt-dlp-and-FFmpeg workflow is more transparent: the processing happens on your device, the software can be obtained from its official projects, and you can see where the output is saved. It is still your responsibility to respect copyright, YouTube’s terms, and the rights associated with the material.
Bottom line
Use YouTube Premium when you want official offline listening inside YouTube. When you need an actual MP3, use yt-dlp with FFmpeg only for content you own or are authorized to download and convert. Select MP3 for compatibility; otherwise, keep the best available original audio to avoid an unnecessary lossy conversion.
