You can export an individual Apple Note as a PDF on iPhone or iPad without installing another app. Open the note, tap Share → Markup → Done, then choose where to save or send the PDF. If the note contains a multipage scan or attached PDF, export that attachment directly instead: Apple says exporting the whole note includes only the attachment’s first page.
These steps apply to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple may change button labels or placement in later versions, and the Share Sheet can look different depending on device and installed apps.
Export a note as a PDF on iPhone
- Open Notes and select the note.
- Tap Share, then tap Markup. If you do not see Markup, scroll through the Share Sheet or check More.
- Review the PDF preview. Use the Markup tools if you want to draw, highlight, add text, or sign.
- Tap Done.
- Choose a destination, such as Save to Files, Mail, Messages, or AirDrop.
- If you chose Save to Files, select a folder—such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive—and tap Save.

Export a note as a PDF on iPad
- Open Notes and open the note you want to export.
- Tap Share, then Markup.
- Check the preview and add any annotations you need.
- Tap Done, then select Save to Files or another destination.
The process is substantially the same on iPad. Depending on the iPad layout, Print may appear in the Share Sheet’s More menu. Apple’s iPad Notes guide

Choose where to save or send the PDF
- iCloud Drive: Save there to access the file from other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- On My iPhone or On My iPad: Keep the PDF stored locally on that device.
- Another cloud service: Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, and similar locations may appear if the provider’s app and Files integration are set up.
- AirDrop: Send it to a nearby Apple device.
- Mail or Messages: Attach the PDF to a message rather than saving it for later.
To find a saved PDF later, open the Files app and browse to the folder you selected.
Export a multipage scan or attached PDF without losing pages
Exporting the note is not the same as exporting its attachment. Apple states that a whole-note PDF uses the current view settings for attachments and includes only the first page of a multipage PDF or scanned document. If you need every page, open the scan or PDF inside Notes and use the attachment’s own share or save controls to save it to Files. Apple’s iPhone Notes guide

- For a scan made in Notes: Open the scanned document attachment and use its controls to share or save the document itself. Check the saved file’s page count in Files or Quick Look.
- For a PDF imported from another app: Share or save the attached PDF directly if you want the original document and all its pages.
- Export the whole note only when: You want a snapshot of the note’s text and visible attachment content together, and the first-page limitation is acceptable.

Export handwriting, drawings, and photos

- Wait for handwriting or drawings to finish rendering before exporting.
- Adjust the note or attachment view if the arrangement does not look right; Apple says attachment view settings affect the exported PDF.
- Photos and other images appear according to their current display settings in the note.
- Review the generated PDF before sending it. Use Markup to add a signature, arrow, highlight, or correction to the PDF.
Use Print if Markup is unavailable
If the Share Sheet does not show Markup, the Print route can serve as a fallback. Apple documents printing notes on iPhone and iPad; the print-preview sharing step creates the PDF workflow.
- Open the note and tap Share.
- Choose Print. It may be visible in the Share Sheet or under More.
- On the print preview screen, tap Share.
- Choose Save to Files or another destination.

What does not transfer as an editable Notes feature
A PDF is a fixed-layout export, not a copy of the editable Notes structure. If you open a note in Pages as an alternative document workflow, Apple says tags, mentions, checklists, and links to notes are not active items there; drawings cannot be edited in Pages; scanned documents and PDFs appear as thumbnail images; and a shared note’s resulting Pages document is not shared. When a PDF app is worth using
For a one-off export of a note, try Apple Notes first. A separate PDF app is useful when you need to merge files, rearrange or delete pages, run OCR, edit existing PDF text, redact information, fill forms, compress a file, or manage many PDFs. Adobe Acrobat may suit people already using Adobe tools; PDF Expert is another option for broader PDF editing and page management. Neither is required just to save a note as a PDF.

Troubleshoot common export problems
Markup is missing
Scroll through the Share Sheet, check More, and confirm that you tapped Share for the note rather than an attachment. If Markup still is not available, try the Print route.
Only one page of a scan appears
The whole-note export includes only the first page of a multipage scan or PDF attachment. Open and save the attachment itself, then check its page count in Files or Quick Look.
The PDF looks cropped or misplaced
Apple says the exported PDF reflects the note’s current attachment-view settings. Adjust the note or image layout, export again, and review the preview. If you need precise document page layout, Pages offers more control, but its Notes-specific feature limitations still apply.
The note is locked
Unlock it before trying to export its contents through Pages. A locked note may also restrict ordinary sharing actions.
The PDF is too large to send
Export only the note or attachment you need, remove unnecessary high-resolution images, or compress the finished PDF in a PDF editor. Avoid uploading sensitive notes to an online compressor unless you are comfortable with its privacy practices.
