To turn an image into a website URL, upload it to a host that serves the file publicly, then use the resulting direct image URL. For a quick manual upload, Imgur can provide an image address; for repeatable, automated uploads, Cloudinary returns a delivery URL you can use in a page or app. A share link is not always a direct image link, so test the URL where you plan to use it.
What it means to convert an image into a URL
An image stored on your computer does not yet have a public website address. You first need to place it on a service or site that can serve the file over the web. That host provides a URL, which you can then put into HTML, Markdown, a CMS, or another application.
The useful distinction is between a direct image URL and a viewer or share URL. A direct URL returns the image resource itself when opened. A viewer link may instead open a web page, require sign-in, or only work for people with permission. That difference matters when a destination expects an image file rather than a page.

For the simplest manual task, start with Imgur. For an application that uploads images regularly, Cloudinary’s API is a better fit. Use repository assets or a deployment when you want the file managed with a public project or site.

Get a direct image URL with Imgur
- Open Imgur and select New post.
- Choose the image from your device or drag it into the upload dialog. Imgur’s upload instructions
- Open the uploaded image. On desktop, use Copy image address; in the mobile web or app flow, use Copy link. Imgur says uploaded content can be located with a direct URL link. Imgur upload FAQ
- Paste the address into the destination that needs it, such as an HTML image element or Markdown.
If you upload while signed out, save the URL somewhere you control. Imgur warns that it cannot locate an anonymous upload later without its direct link. For uploads you want to manage through an account, sign in before uploading.
Use the URL in HTML
Replace the example URL and alt text with your own:
<img src="https://example.com/path/to/image.jpg" alt="Description of the image">The src value should be the URL that serves the image, not a page that displays it. Descriptive alt text explains the image to people using assistive technology and provides context if it cannot load.

Use the URL in Markdown
Some forums, documentation sites, and content systems restrict which hosts they accept or how they display remote images. If the image works in a browser but not in the destination, check that system’s rules and test the address there.
Automate uploads with Cloudinary
Cloudinary is intended for managed image delivery and programmatic workflows. Its upload flow accepts a local file, buffer, stream, remote URL, or data URI. The response includes a secure_url, described in its documentation as the canonical delivery URL of the original. - Create a Cloudinary environment and select an authenticated or allowed unsigned upload method.
- Send the image using one of the supported input types.
- Read the returned
secure_url, or construct a delivery URL using the asset’spublic_id. - Use delivery transformations if you need to resize, convert formats, or optimize the image.

Check that the URL is actually usable
- Open the copied URL in a private or incognito browser window. This checks whether it loads without relying on your signed-in session.
- Confirm it displays the image itself rather than a viewer page, sign-in screen, or permissions error.
- Try the URL in the actual destination: HTML, Markdown, your CMS, or the API that will consume it. Some systems reject redirects or responses that do not have an image content type.
- If other people need to see the image, verify they can access it without your account credentials.
A URL that works only in your own logged-in browser is not necessarily public. A publicly accessible URL also means that anyone who obtains it may be able to see the image.

Common problems and fixes
The URL opens a page, not the image
You probably copied a share or viewer link. Return to the host’s image view and copy its image address or delivery URL. Then open the copied address in a private window and check that the image itself loads.

The host may require sign-in or the file may have restricted permissions. Check the access settings and test while signed out. Do not make sensitive media public just to make an embed work.
The image does not appear in HTML or Markdown
Check for a copying error, a removed asset, or a destination that blocks the host or redirects. Paste the URL directly into a private browser window first, then test it in the target system. If it returns a page instead of an image, use the host’s direct delivery URL.

You lost an anonymous Imgur upload
Imgur says an anonymous upload cannot be located later without its direct URL. If you still have the link, keep it and use it to reach the content; for future uploads you want to manage, sign in and retain the URL. Imgur upload FAQ
A Google Drive link will not embed as an image
A Drive share link can lead to a viewer or permissions page rather than the image resource. The Drive API uploads file data as a Drive File resource, but that alone does not establish that a given share URL is a direct embeddable image URL. Google Drive upload guide
Privacy, control, and URL durability
Assume that an image at a public or anonymized URL can be seen by anyone who receives the address. GitHub explicitly warns that anyone who receives an anonymized image URL, directly or indirectly, may view the image or video. Do not use public links for private documents, personal records, or other sensitive material. GitHub documentation
Consider who controls the account or deployment, whether you can manage or remove the upload, and how the provider handles retention. Imgur advises signing in for uploads you want to manage and keeping the URL for anonymous uploads. No universal upload limit, uptime, or permanence figure applies across the providers described here; check the chosen service’s current plan and policies before relying on it for important assets.
