The most reliable way to convert a webpage to Markdown is to use a browser extension that explicitly supports Markdown conversion. Open the page, run the extension on the current tab (or on a selected passage), inspect the generated Markdown, then copy it to your clipboard or download a .md file. MarkDownload documents this workflow for whole pages and selections.
Do not confuse Chrome Reading mode with Markdown export. Reading mode can simplify supported pages for comfortable reading, but Google’s documentation does not describe a Markdown download or copy command.
Convert a complete webpage to Markdown
- Open the page in a desktop browser. Wait until the text, images, tables and code you need have loaded. If the page uses “load more” controls, activate them first.
- Open a Markdown conversion extension. MarkDownload’s documented workflow is to open its browser action, inspect the rendered Markdown, and then copy it or download the result as a Markdown file.
- Review the generated document. Check the title, heading levels, links, lists, tables, code blocks, images and any content inserted by JavaScript.
- Copy or save the result. Copy the reviewed text to a Markdown editor, or download the
.mdfile and open it in your editor of choice.
The extension’s preview is important: conversion extracts readable content and transforms the page structure; it is not a pixel-for-pixel copy of the original site.
Convert only part of a webpage
When you need one section rather than an entire article, select the text in the page before opening the extension. MarkDownload documents a Copy Selection as Markdown action. This is useful for a definition, a procedure, a quoted section or a single table.
#1 Best Overall
- Drag over the passage you want, including its headings and list items.
- Open the extension’s selection command.
- Inspect the result for missing links, list nesting and code formatting.
- Copy the Markdown into your document.
Selection conversion usually excludes nearby context such as the page title, publication date and navigation. Add that metadata manually when your notes need it.
What gets preserved—and what can change
A webpage is HTML with CSS, scripts and embedded resources. Markdown has a much smaller set of constructs. MarkDownload describes simplifying page content with Readability.js and converting the simplified HTML with Turndown. That two-stage process explains both the cleaner output and the omissions that can occur.
Headings, paragraphs and emphasis
Semantic headings normally become Markdown headings, paragraphs remain paragraphs, and bold or italic text becomes the corresponding Markdown emphasis. Poorly structured source HTML can produce awkward heading levels, so scan the outline before publishing.
Links
Most ordinary hyperlinks become Markdown links. Check links that are generated by scripts, open in overlays, or point to URLs hidden behind tracking or redirect controls. If a link matters, open it from the source page and verify the destination before relying on it.
Rank #2
Lists and tables
Ordered and unordered lists generally convert cleanly, but deeply nested lists can lose indentation. Tables deserve a manual pass: merged cells, multi-row headers and responsive mobile tables do not map neatly to standard Markdown tables. Rebuild a complex table when column meaning could be misunderstood.
Code blocks
Fenced code blocks can survive conversion when the source identifies them as code. Confirm the language label, indentation and special characters. Inline code should remain inline; a missing backtick can change the meaning of an entire paragraph.
Images and captions
Images may become Markdown image syntax, but lazy-loaded images, CSS background images and images inserted after page load can be absent. Check that each retained image has a useful alternative description and that its URL remains accessible. Captions may be separated from their images and need to be joined manually.

Cookie banners, navigation, comments, advertisements and chat controls may be removed by readability extraction. Conversely, text that appears only after a click, scroll or network request may never enter the extracted HTML. Trigger the interaction and wait for the content before converting, then compare the Markdown with the visible page.
Why Chrome Reading mode is not a Markdown converter
Chrome Reading mode is designed to reduce visual clutter through a distilled reading view. Google documents reading controls and notes that Reading mode is unavailable on some websites, but the reviewed help material does not document Markdown export. Use it when your goal is comfortable reading; choose an extension with an explicit copy-or-download Markdown feature when your goal is a .md file.
Choose a conversion method by outcome
| What you need | Best-fit method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A complete page as a Markdown file | A browser extension with documented Markdown copy/download | Inspect the result for omitted or dynamically loaded content. |
| One passage as Markdown | Selection-to-Markdown command | Page metadata and surrounding context are usually not included. |
| A distraction-free reading view | Chrome Reading mode on a supported site | It is a reading transformation, not a documented Markdown export workflow. |
| Evaluate another extension | Review current browser support, permissions, conversion controls, export options and privacy documentation | Store descriptions are publisher claims; availability and permissions can change. |
A review checklist before you save the Markdown
- Structure: Is there one clear title, with logical heading levels beneath it?
- Completeness: Did expandable sections, comments or lazy-loaded material matter to your use case?
- Links: Do important links point to the intended pages?
- Lists: Are nesting and numbering still correct?
- Tables: Are headers, columns and merged cells understandable?
- Code: Are fences, indentation and language labels intact?
- Images: Are image URLs and alternative text present?
- Metadata: Should you add the source URL, author, publication date or access date?
- Rights and privacy: Are you permitted to copy and redistribute the material, and does the page contain personal or confidential information?
Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The extension produces almost no text
The page may be an application shell whose content is injected later, or the readable article may be inside an iframe. Wait for the page to finish loading, scroll through the content, dismiss obstructing dialogs and try again. If the text still does not appear in the page’s normal DOM, a browser converter cannot reliably extract it without a site-specific method.
Headings or lists are flattened
Readability extraction can discard layout markup, and inconsistent source HTML can make hierarchy ambiguous. Recreate the heading or list structure in the Markdown editor rather than trusting visual indentation from the original page.
A table is unreadable
Responsive tables often render as cards on narrow screens, while merged cells have no direct Markdown equivalent. Convert the table as plain text only if the relationships remain clear; otherwise, rebuild it with simple columns or keep a link to the original table.
Images are missing
Scroll until lazy images load, then rerun the conversion. If an image is a CSS background or requires a script-generated URL, add it manually and write alternative text. Check whether the source requires authentication before assuming the Markdown link is broken.
The downloaded file has the wrong extension or encoding
Rename the file to end in .md only after confirming that its contents are plain text. Open it as UTF-8 in your editor so accented characters and non-Latin scripts are not corrupted.
Selection conversion omits the first or last line
Browser selections can stop at a boundary element. Expand the selection to include the complete paragraph or heading, run the conversion again, and remove the extra text afterward.

Automation and repeatability
For occasional notes, a browser workflow is faster than building a scraper. For a recurring archive, standardize a checklist: record the source URL and access date, wait for dynamic content, convert, review structural elements, and store the Markdown with a stable filename. Keep the original URL because conversion tools simplify content and do not guarantee complete preservation.
Before processing sensitive pages, read the extension’s current permissions and privacy documentation. Browser store listings can change, and the cited listings describe features rather than independent tests. No single extension should be called universally best without checking its current browser support and behavior on your pages.

If what you actually need is a visual snapshot of a page for documentation, QA or an archive, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It captures PNG, JPEG or WebP images (and PDFs), but it does not turn HTML into Markdown text, so keep using a Markdown converter for editable content.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. A minimal cURL call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ
Can I convert a webpage to Markdown without installing an extension?
Yes, but the documented workflow covered here uses a browser extension because it provides explicit current-tab and selection conversion plus clipboard or file export. Manual copy-and-cleanup is possible, but it requires you to rebuild headings, links, lists and code formatting yourself.
Will the converted Markdown preserve the original page exactly?
No. Markdown cannot represent every CSS layout or interactive element, and readability extraction may omit navigation, comments, popups or dynamically inserted content. Treat the result as an editable text representation and retain the source URL.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is it acceptable to republish converted page content?
Conversion does not change copyright, license or privacy obligations. Check the page’s license and obtain permission when required before redistributing the Markdown.
What should I archive when the page may change?
Save the reviewed Markdown together with the original URL and the date you accessed it. If visual appearance matters, keep a screenshot or PDF separately; that is where a screenshot service such as ScreenshotNeo can complement, rather than replace, Markdown conversion.
