To convert a web page for printing, open it in Edge, Firefox, or another modern browser, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, choose a printer or PDF destination, adjust paper, orientation, scale, margins, and background settings, then inspect the preview before saving or printing. For a cleaner result, use Edge Immersive Reader or Firefox Reader View first.
Print a web page or save it as a PDF
- Open the page. Wait until the text and images you need have loaded.
- Open print preview. Choose the browser menu’s Print command, press Ctrl+P in Windows, or press Command+P on macOS.
- Choose the destination. Select a physical printer, or choose a PDF destination. In Firefox, select Save to PDF from the destination drop-down.
- Set the page format. Select the paper size, orientation, page range, scale, margins, color mode, and whether backgrounds, headers, and footers should be included.
- Check the preview. Look for clipped columns, missing images, unexpected blank pages, navigation menus, cookie banners, and browser-generated URLs or dates.
- Print or save. Click Print for paper or Save for a PDF, then open the resulting file to verify it.
Edge documents Letter, A4, Legal, Executive, A3, B4, B5, and envelope paper sizes. Firefox exposes paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, duplex printing, headers and footers, and backgrounds; labels can vary by browser version and operating system.
Make the page cleaner before printing
Edge Immersive Reader
When the address bar shows the Immersive Reader icon, open it before printing. You can also try F9 where that shortcut is supported. Edge describes this as a clutter-free print option that removes surrounding material such as advertising and site navigation. It is not available on every site, and complex web applications may not render correctly in the reader.
Firefox Reader View
In Firefox, activate Reader View from the address bar when it is offered, then print the simplified page. Firefox may also provide a Simplified format under More settings. Simplified output cannot be combined with printed backgrounds.

Print only a selection in Edge
Highlight the text or images you need, right-click the selection, and choose Print. This is useful for a recipe, a table row, or one section of a long article, but the selection-print option depends on the page and browser.
Use an editing extension
Firefox’s print guidance names Print Edit WE as an option for removing or editing page elements before printing. Treat extensions as optional: review their permissions, keep them updated, and test the preview because an edit can remove required text or images.
Choose settings that fit paper and PDF
Paper size and orientation
Use the same paper size loaded in the printer. Letter is common in the United States; A4 is common in many other regions. Switch to Landscape for wide tables, dashboards, and code samples. Portrait generally uses fewer pages for ordinary articles.
Scale and margins
If a column is cut off, reduce the scale or choose a matching paper size. Narrow margins fit more content but leave less room for handwritten notes and may exceed a printer’s non-printable edge. Browser preview is the authority; the CSS layout can change again when a physical printer driver is selected.

Color and backgrounds
Enable Background graphics when colored panels, charts, or logos are part of the information. Backgrounds consume ink and can reduce contrast, so disable them for text-heavy documents or when you want economical monochrome output.
Headers and footers
Turn browser headers and footers off if you do not want the page title, URL, date, or page number added automatically. Keep page numbers for a multi-page handout when they help readers assemble printed sheets.
Page range and pages per sheet
Enter a page range to avoid printing an entire site. Pages-per-sheet saves paper for drafts, but small text can become difficult to read. For a final copy, one page per sheet is usually clearer.
Why a page looks different from the screen
Printing is a separate rendering mode. A site can supply a CSS @media print stylesheet that hides navigation, changes colors, removes advertisements, expands or collapses columns, and inserts page breaks. Microsoft’s Edge developer documentation describes the print media query as styles that apply only when a page is printed. Chrome documents the @page rule and other print-specific controls, including content in page margins.

A screen layout also has unlimited horizontal space and interactive behavior; paper and PDF have fixed page boundaries. JavaScript widgets may not load their data before preview, sticky elements can repeat or disappear, and a large image or table can force an awkward page break. Browser print dialogs can independently add or remove headers, footers, and backgrounds.
Inspect print CSS as a developer
In Chromium-based browsers, open DevTools, open the command menu, and enable print emulation (the exact label varies by version). Inspect the document while the print media type is active. Look for @media print, @page, fixed widths, overflow, and explicit page-break rules. This reveals why an element visible on screen is hidden or repositioned in the preview.
Troubleshoot common print problems
Text or columns are cut off
- Change to Landscape for wide content.
- Reduce scale slightly and select the correct paper size.
- Try Reader View or Immersive Reader, which often removes wide navigation and advertising columns.
- For a page you control, replace fixed pixel widths in print CSS with fluid widths and test the preview at the target paper size.
Images, colors, or banners are missing
- Wait for all images to finish loading before opening preview.
- Enable Background graphics when color is intentional.
- Check whether the site’s print stylesheet hides decorative images; this is expected behavior on some pages.
- Save the PDF and reopen it to distinguish a preview issue from a printer-driver issue.
The output contains ads, chat, or consent panels
Use Reader View or Immersive Reader first. If those modes are unavailable, print only the selected content or remove elements with a print-editing extension. Consent dialogs can also cover content in the source page, so dismiss them before preview when appropriate.
There are unexpected blank pages
Check for a large element, forced page break, or a fixed-height container in the page’s print CSS. In preview, reduce scale, switch orientation, or print a narrower page range. On a site you maintain, inspect break-before, break-after, legacy page-break-* rules, and oversized containers.
The printer ignores the preview
First save to PDF. If the PDF is correct, select the intended printer, paper tray, and scaling option in the operating-system printer dialog; some drivers apply their own “fit” or borderless settings.

Developer options for repeatable output
Use print CSS on a site you control
Put print-only rules in @media print. Hide controls that have no paper equivalent, set readable colors, allow long text to wrap, and avoid clipping with fixed heights. Use @page to express page size and margins where supported, but still test in the browsers and paper sizes your users use.
Automate with WebView2
For a Windows application built with WebView2, Microsoft documents ShowPrintUI, Print, PrintToPdf, and PrintToPdfStream. PrintToPdf silently prints the current top-level document to a PDF file; this is appropriate when an application needs repeatable, unattended export rather than a user-driven browser dialog.

Can I print a web page without printing the whole site?
Yes. Select the required text or images, right-click, and choose Print in Edge when the selection-print option is available, or enter a specific page range in the print dialog.
Why does Reader View sometimes disappear?
Reader View and Immersive Reader are offered only when the browser can identify a suitable article structure. Some sites, web apps, and login-protected pages do not expose the required structure.
Should I save as PDF before sending a document to a printer?
Saving a PDF is a useful diagnostic step. If the PDF preview is correct but paper is not, investigate the selected printer, paper tray, driver scaling, or borderless-print settings.
