Decode the saved QR image with a QR reader, then inspect the returned payload. If it begins with a scheme such as https://, it is a URL you can copy or open after checking the domain. A QR code can contain email addresses, contact data, Wi-Fi settings, payment details, or arbitrary text, so decoding and URL validation are separate steps.
The basic process
- Use a QR decoder that accepts an image file or image URL.
- Upload the saved picture, or select it from your phone’s gallery.
- Read the raw decoded text before opening anything.
- Confirm that the value has an expected scheme, such as
https://, and inspect the domain for spelling or impersonation. - Copy the verified URL or open it in a new tab.
A reader extracts the data actually encoded in the symbol. It cannot infer a destination that was never stored in the QR code.
Convert a saved QR image in a browser
Use an online decoder
- Open ZXing Decoder Online in your browser.
- Choose the option to upload an image file, or supply the image URL if the picture is hosted online.
- Run the decode operation.
- Copy the returned text. Open it only after checking the scheme and domain.
ZXing’s decoder supports QR Code images as well as other barcode formats. This is convenient when the QR image is already on your computer and you do not have a second phone available.
Protect private images
An online decoder requires you to send the image to that service. Do not upload a screenshot containing passwords, identity documents, private tickets, payment information, or an unpublished access code unless you accept that exposure. For sensitive material, decode locally with a phone’s built-in recognition feature or an on-device library.

Scan a QR code from a photo on iPhone or iPad
From the Photos app
- Open the saved picture in Photos.
- Look for the QR or Live Text recognition control.
- Tap the detected result to view the payload.
- Read the domain or text before choosing to open it.
Apple documents that a QR payload can be a URL or an email address. Its instruction for a code shown live is: “Hold your device so that the QR code appears, then tap the link to open the content.”
From a code displayed on another screen
- Open Camera or Code Scanner.
- Point the device at the QR symbol without covering its edges.
- Wait for the recognition banner, then tap the displayed result.
If the QR is in a screenshot on the same iPhone, use Photos rather than trying to point the camera at the phone’s own display.
Scan on Android
Use the gallery or Lens action
Many Android phones expose a QR or Lens button when you view an image in the gallery. Open the saved picture, select that action, and copy the decoded value. Names and locations differ by manufacturer and Android version.
Build it into an app with Google ML Kit
Google ML Kit Barcode Scanning recognizes QR codes in an image and returns decoded data, including URL values. Your app should display the returned string first, label its type, and require an explicit tap before launching a browser.

Developer options for decoding an image
ZXing on the JVM or Android
ZXing’s QRCodeReader detects and decodes a QR code in an image and returns the encoded content. A typical implementation converts the image into a luminance source, creates a binary bitmap, and passes it to QRCodeReader. Handle decoding exceptions rather than assuming every image contains a valid code.
Mobile barcode SDKs
A mobile barcode SDK is useful when users choose pictures from a gallery, when you need batch processing, or when decoding must remain on the device. Return both the raw text and the detected format so callers can distinguish a QR code from another barcode.
Make URL handling explicit
Do not treat every decoded string as a navigable link. A safe URL pipeline should:
- Preserve the exact decoded text for copying and auditing.
- Recognize an allowed scheme, normally
https://(and, only when your application deliberately supports them, schemes such ashttp://or an app-specific scheme). - Parse the hostname and display it to the user.
- Reject malformed URLs and unexpected schemes such as
javascript:. - Open external links in the platform’s normal browser or a protected web view, according to your threat model.
ZXing notes that a common barcode use is encoding URL text such as https://google.com/m. The scheme is part of the value; it is not safe to prepend https:// automatically to arbitrary decoded text.

How to verify a decoded URL
- Check the scheme. Prefer
https://for web destinations. Anhttp://link is unencrypted and deserves extra caution. - Read the complete hostname. Attackers often use look-alike domains, extra hyphens, or a familiar name in a subdomain. In
example.com.attacker.test, the real registrable domain isattacker.test. - Watch for punycode and redirects. An unfamiliar internationalized hostname or a shortened link can conceal the final destination.
- Do not enter secrets from a QR prompt. A legitimate-looking page can still be a phishing site. Navigate to a known bookmark or type the service’s address yourself when in doubt.
- Preserve the raw value. Copy it into a text field or notes before opening so you can report or compare it later.
Why decoding fails and how to recover
No code found
Crop the image tightly around one QR symbol while keeping all three large finder squares visible. Remove surrounding artwork, captions, and borders that can confuse detection. If several codes appear in one picture, crop and decode them one at a time.
Blur, glare, or low resolution
Use the original photo instead of a compressed messaging-app copy. Avoid reflections, shadows, and motion blur. A larger source image helps, but enlarging with a smoothing filter cannot restore missing modules; use a sharper original whenever possible.
Format or checksum error
Try a second decoder and a higher-quality copy. ZXing distinguishes failures such as NotFoundException, FormatException, and ChecksumException. They indicate different stages of failure, but the practical remedies are the same: obtain a cleaner image, ensure the entire symbol is present, and retry.
Only part of the QR is visible
A QR code normally needs its full square, including the quiet margin around it. If a screenshot cuts off an edge or covers a finder square, ask for the original image or recapture the whole display.

The result is text, not a URL
This is not necessarily an error. QR codes can intentionally contain an email address, contact record, Wi-Fi configuration, payment payload, or ordinary text. Keep the returned data unchanged and use the appropriate application only after confirmation.

- Keep the original image until decoding and verification are complete.
- Record the raw payload separately from the normalized URL.
- Show the hostname before navigation.
- Apply size and time limits when processing user-supplied images.
- For server-side decoding, avoid logging full tokens or personal data found in QR payloads.
- Test with clean, rotated, compressed, and partially damaged images, and handle decoder exceptions explicitly.

Does every QR code contain a website address?
No. The encoded payload may be an email address, contact record, Wi-Fi configuration, payment data, application command, or plain text.
Should I add https:// when the decoder returns only a domain name?
Do not rewrite unknown data automatically. Treat it as text, verify what the sender intended, and add a scheme only in a context where you control and validate the input.
Why does one scanner read an image that another rejects?
Decoders differ in image preprocessing and error handling. A tighter crop, less glare, or the original-resolution file often matters more than the brand of reader.
