First decide whether you need a PNG of every document page or just one picture inside the document. In Microsoft Word, select a picture and use Save as Picture to export that graphic as PNG. To turn full pages into images, export or convert the document page by page—using LibreOffice’s Writer PNG filter if it works in your installed version, or saving to PDF and rasterizing the PDF pages.
Choose what you want to convert
“Convert a DOC to PNG” can mean two different things:
- Extract one embedded graphic: save a photo, chart, shape, or other selected illustration as its own PNG. This produces an image of that item, not an image of the whole page.
- Render document pages: create a separate PNG image for each page. This preserves the page’s appearance as a visual snapshot, but the PNG does not retain the document’s editable text structure.
If you need a picture for a slide or post, extracting a graphic may be all you need. If you need to show or archive the appearance of the document, render the pages. Keep the DOC file—or a PDF copy—if you need text to remain selectable or editable.
Save an embedded picture as a PNG in Word
Word’s Save as Picture command saves selected graphic content separately. It does not export every document page. Microsoft Support documents the workflow for graphics including photos, shapes, charts, SmartArt, digital ink, and text boxes, with PNG among the available file types.

- Open the DOC file in Word.
- Select the picture or other graphic you want to export. For a chart or grouped object, select the object itself rather than the surrounding text.
- Right-click the selection and choose Save as Picture.
- In the save dialog, choose PNG as the file type, enter a filename, select a destination, and save.
- Open the saved PNG and check that it contains the intended graphic and has the expected edges and appearance.
If the command is unavailable, confirm that you selected a graphic object rather than text or a page background. Word for Mac also has a quality limitation: Microsoft notes that when saving a graphic, users cannot control compression and other image-quality settings available in dedicated image software.
Export whole pages with LibreOffice Writer
LibreOffice documents a Writer PNG export filter, named writer_png_Export, and export properties including pixel width, pixel height, page number, transparency, and antialiasing. Its conversion-filter reference also lists DOC as an input format and describes the general soffice --convert-to command syntax. However, the documentation reviewed does not provide a finished command example specifically demonstrating DOC-to-PNG page conversion. The exact behavior can depend on the LibreOffice version and installed filters, so treat this as a route to verify rather than a guaranteed command for every release.
Try conversion from the command line
Install LibreOffice, then run a conversion in a terminal. A general form is:
soffice --headless --convert-to png:writer_png_Export --outdir ./png-output ./document.doc

Replace ./document.doc with the input file path. Create the output directory first, and use a separate directory so generated files are easy to identify. This command follows LibreOffice’s documented conversion syntax and filter name; it is not an example explicitly guaranteed by the documentation for every DOC file or LibreOffice release.
Check the output directory after the command finishes. If it creates a PNG, open it and confirm the page content and dimensions. If it creates only one image, does not create an image, or reports an unsupported conversion, use the PDF route below instead. To adjust the exported image, use the PNG filter’s available properties in a graphical export workflow where offered; set pixel width and height deliberately, and check how transparency and antialiasing affect the result.
Export a particular page or control its size
LibreOffice’s graphics-export settings include a page number and pixel dimensions. These are useful when you want a selected page or a specific raster size, but a fixed pixel width and height can change the apparent scale or fit of content. Inspect the page at its intended display size rather than assuming that a larger number always improves the result. Antialiasing can affect the smoothness of text and line edges; transparency matters when the destination needs a transparent background.
Use PDF as an intermediate when direct export is inconvenient
A practical fallback is to open the DOC in a compatible word processor, save or export it as PDF, and then render the PDF pages to PNG using image software. Microsoft’s Word file-format reference includes PDF support for the Word versions it identifies. This two-step approach separates document layout from image rendering: first check the PDF for page breaks and fonts, then rasterize it.

- Open the DOC in Word or another compatible word processor.
- Use the application’s save or export command to create a PDF.
- Open or render the PDF in software that can export pages as PNG. If using ImageMagick, its documentation says PDF reading requires Ghostscript.
- Choose whether to render every page or a page range, and select the output resolution or dimensions if the application provides those controls.
- Review the PNG files against the PDF, particularly the first and last pages and any page with tables, images, or unusual margins.
ImageMagick also notes that PDF page-box selection can affect rendered bounds. If a PNG seems cropped or has unexpected margins, inspect the page-box setting in the rendering workflow before changing the document itself. Different page boxes can include different areas around the visible page content.
Pick settings for the way you will use the PNGs

For a standard document, separate page images are usually easier to view and share than a single very tall image. If you specifically need one long image, combine the page images after export; that is a separate layout step, and the resulting file can be awkward to scroll, print, or read on a small screen.
Check the conversion before sharing
- Page count: make sure there is an image for every page you meant to export and no unintended extras.
- Page boundaries: inspect margins, headers, footers, and the bottom of each page for clipping. With PDF rendering, page-box selection can change the rendered bounds.
- Layout: compare line wraps, page breaks, tables, and images with the DOC or exported PDF. A DOC opened in different software may not lay out identically if fonts or other dependencies differ.
- Dimensions and readability: check pixel width and height and zoom in on small text. A PNG that looks acceptable as a thumbnail may not be readable when enlarged.
- Transparency: verify it against a colored background if transparent output was requested.
- Output format: open the file in an image viewer to confirm it is actually PNG and not a PDF or another image format with a renamed extension.
Troubleshooting common problems
Word saved only the selected picture, not the page
That is the intended scope of Save as Picture. To make a page image, export or convert the document pages through LibreOffice’s PNG filter or use the PDF intermediate workflow.
The LibreOffice command produces no PNG
The installed release may not accept that conversion combination, or the input may not be readable as expected. Check the terminal’s error output, confirm the input path and output directory, and verify that the installed version recognizes the Writer PNG filter. Because the official conversion reference does not show a DOC-to-PNG command example, switch to PDF export and render the PDF if the command does not work in your setup.

The output is cropped or has unexpected margins
For a PDF rendered with ImageMagick, inspect which PDF page box is used; the selected box can alter the rendered bounds. Also compare the PDF itself with the DOC before rasterizing to determine whether the layout issue began during PDF export or image rendering.
Text or thin lines look rough
Review the pixel dimensions and antialiasing setting in the export workflow. Render at a size appropriate for the intended display or print use, then inspect small type and fine lines at actual size. Increasing dimensions can help preserve detail, but it also increases image size and does not repair a layout problem.
The result has the wrong number of images
Confirm whether the chosen workflow exports a selected graphic, one page, or a page range. Then compare the number of generated images with the number of pages requested; do not assume that a successful conversion means every page was included.
