Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can control many Android phones from a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, but there is no single method that works fully with every phone in every situation. For free local control, use scrcpy over USB. On a supported Windows PC, Phone Link is simpler. For access over the internet, use a remote-access service and expect extra setup, permissions, and device-specific limits.
“Control” usually means seeing the phone screen and operating it with a mouse and keyboard—not bypassing its lock screen, changing every system setting, or making every app respond. Choose a tool based on where the phone is, whether you can approve its permissions, and whether you need someone present for each session.
Choose a method based on where the phone is
| Situation | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Phone beside your computer; free, responsive local control | scrcpy over USB | Requires Developer options, USB debugging, and approval on the phone. |
| Supported Android phone and Windows PC | Microsoft Phone Link | Phone screen control is limited to supported devices and generally requires the PC and phone on the same Wi-Fi network. |
| Personal access from another location | AirDroid Personal | Requires an app, account or pairing, and Android permissions; some features may require a paid plan. |
| Helping another person remotely | AirDroid Remote Support | The person being helped must typically install the app and approve access for an attended session. |
| Managed business devices or planned unattended access | AirDroid Remote Support Business or another managed-support product | Requires enrollment, permissions, administration, and a paid business workflow. |
| A particular phone with compatible vendor support | AnyDesk | Full input control depends on model-specific plug-in support; its generic Android plug-in may offer only basic control. |
For any remote tool, confirm compatibility with the exact phone model and Android version before relying on it. First-time setup commonly requires someone to unlock the phone and approve USB debugging, Accessibility, screen capture, or a support session.
What “full control” does—and does not—mean
Remote-control tools usually combine screen streaming with some form of simulated touch and keyboard input. That can let you open apps, tap, type, scroll, drag, and navigate. Other capabilities vary by tool and Android version:
#1 Best Overall
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Screen mirroring: viewing the phone display on the computer. This alone does not prove that clicks or typing will work.
- Input control: using the computer’s mouse and keyboard to interact with the phone.
- File and device features: transferring files, managing notifications, or other cross-device tasks. These are product-specific and are not the same as unrestricted administration.
- Unattended access: connecting later without someone physically approving each session. This needs advance setup and creates additional security risk.
No method described here should be treated as a way to defeat Android’s lock screen. Banking, payment, DRM-protected, corporate, or otherwise protected apps may block screen capture, overlays, or simulated input. A phone that is offline, reset, or waiting for an approval prompt may also be inaccessible.
Use scrcpy for free local control over USB
For a phone next to your computer, scrcpy is the broadest free option covered here. The official project supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; Android 5.0 (API 21) or newer; mouse and keyboard input; and USB or TCP/IP connections. It does not require root, an account, or an app installed on the phone. The Genymobile repository listed version 4.1 on August 18, 2026; version and feature details can change.
Audio forwarding is supported on Android 11/API 30 or newer. The project also documents recording, clipboard synchronization, screen-off mirroring, and camera mirroring on Android 12 or newer. Feature availability can depend on Android and device behavior.
Prepare the Android phone
- Open Settings > About phone. On some phones, About phone is nested under System.
- Tap Build number repeatedly until Android confirms Developer options are enabled. The precise wording or location varies by manufacturer.
- Return to Settings, open System > Developer options, or search Settings for “Developer options.” Turn on USB debugging.
- Connect the unlocked phone to the computer using a USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry the required connection.
- When Android displays Allow USB debugging?, approve the computer. Select Always allow from this computer only if it is a trusted computer you control.
These steps authorize ADB (Android Debug Bridge) access from that computer; they are not just a display setting. Android’s developer guidance explains the debugging option at Developer options.

Install and launch scrcpy
- Get scrcpy from the official Genymobile GitHub repository. The project warns that this is its official source; avoid releases from unofficial download sites.
- Install or extract the package for your computer’s operating system.
- Open the scrcpy folder or a terminal in the installed location and run
scrcpy. - Look for a desktop window showing the phone screen. Use the mouse to click and drag and the keyboard to type or navigate. Whether a particular app accepts simulated input still depends on the app and device.
Useful scrcpy commands
Run these in a terminal from the scrcpy installation context. Options can change between releases, so consult the official project documentation if a command is not recognized.
| Purpose | Command |
|---|---|
| Start the default session | scrcpy |
| Check whether ADB detects the phone | adb devices |
| Limit the mirrored size for a lighter stream | scrcpy -m1024 |
| Record the session to a file | scrcpy --record=phone.mp4 |
| Cap the stream at 1920 pixels and 60 fps | scrcpy --max-size=1920 --max-fps=60 |
| Disable audio forwarding | scrcpy --no-audio |
| Turn off the phone display while the session continues | scrcpy --turn-screen-off |
Lowering the mirrored size can help when a computer or connection struggles to keep up. Turning off the phone display does not unlock it or bypass protected content.
Use scrcpy over the local network
scrcpy supports TCP/IP connections, but that does not make it an internet remote-access service. A common USB-assisted setup on a trusted local network is:
- Connect and authorize the phone over USB, then confirm it appears with
adb devices. - Run
adb tcpip 5555to restart ADB in TCP/IP mode. - Find the phone’s local IP address, for example with
adb shell ip route, or in the phone’s network settings. - Connect using
adb connect PHONE_IP:5555, replacingPHONE_IPwith the actual address. - Start scrcpy for that address with
scrcpy --tcpip=PHONE_IP.
For this basic workflow, the devices need to be reachable on the same local network. Some recent Android versions use a Wireless debugging pairing flow instead of the older ADB-over-TCP steps; follow the phone’s displayed pairing process and the current scrcpy documentation. Do not expose ADB’s port directly to the public internet. For access from elsewhere, use a securely configured private network or connect to a trusted computer that remains attached to the phone.

Use Phone Link on a supported Windows setup
Phone Link is the simplest route when the exact Android phone supports the feature. Microsoft’s current requirements specify Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11; Android 10 or later; and a supported Android device. Phone screen is available only for supported devices in selected markets, and Phone screen generally requires the phone and PC to communicate over the same Wi-Fi network. Check Microsoft’s requirements and setup and supported-device list for your model and features.
Pair the phone and PC
- Open Phone Link on the Windows PC.
- On Android, install or open Link to Windows. Some supported phones have it preinstalled.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both devices and choose Pair with QR code in Phone Link.
- Scan the QR code with Link to Windows and approve the permissions requested for the features you want.
- In Phone Link, open Phone screen or Apps, depending on the phone and which experience Microsoft supports for it.
Microsoft documents mouse, keyboard, trackpad, pen, or touch interaction on supported experiences. In Phone screen, right-click generally acts as Back and click-and-hold performs a long press; behavior can vary by app.
Know Phone Link’s limits
- Compatibility depends on the model, market, Android version, and feature; not every Android phone has Phone screen.
- Some games and apps may not respond properly to mouse or keyboard input. Multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts are not currently supported.
- Some phones support one Android app at a time; multi-app use is limited to selected devices.
- Phone Link streams or mirrors Android experiences to Windows; it does not install the phone’s Android apps as native Windows programs.
- Black-screen privacy mode can obscure the phone display while connected.
Microsoft describes these constraints in its documentation for Phone screen and using Android apps on a PC.
Use a remote-access service when the phone is elsewhere
USB scrcpy is a local-control tool, and its Wi-Fi mode is for network-reachable devices—not a ready-made connection across the public internet. For remote access, use a service designed for it and plan for app installation, account or device pairing, and permission approvals. First-time setup generally requires someone with the phone to interact with it.

Personal remote access with AirDroid Personal
AirDroid Personal offers cross-device management features, including Android remote control, through its supported computer or web experiences. Install AirDroid Personal on the phone, use the supported desktop client or web interface, pair or sign in, then enable remote control and approve the requested screen-capture and control permissions.
AirDroid’s current help guidance distinguishes setup by Android version and method: it describes a USB-based non-root setup for Android versions below Android 12, and an Accessibility-based method using the AirDroid Control Add-on for Android 7 and later. For devices above Android 12, that guidance points to the Accessibility method. Follow the current instructions at AirDroid’s non-root and control setup page, since requirements can change with Android releases.
Accessibility access is powerful: it can allow software to observe screen content and interact with the device. Install only the official app and add-on, review the permissions requested, and remove access when you no longer need remote control.
Attended help with AirDroid Remote Support
For helping a family member or friend, AirDroid Remote Support is designed around a support session. Its documented features include connection by a nine-digit code, real-time screen sharing, remote control, chat file transfer, and tutorial gestures. In an attended session, the person holding the phone participates and approves access. Use a session code only with the person you intend to help.

Unattended access for managed devices
AirDroid Remote Support Business advertises device enrollment, unattended and attended support, device groups, permission settings, and administrative logs. This is a managed business workflow, not simply a way to connect to an ordinary personal phone without preparation. Unattended access should be configured only by someone responsible for the device and its security. See AirDroid Remote Support for the product’s current business offering.
Check AnyDesk compatibility before depending on it
AnyDesk can be useful on a model with a compatible manufacturer plug-in, but its generic Android ad1 plug-in may provide only basic control, such as mouse movement, and some input types may not work. Full control can require a dedicated plug-in from the phone manufacturer. Check the exact model against AnyDesk’s Android documentation before relying on it or paying for a deployment.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
The computer does not detect the phone
- Try a known data-capable USB cable and another USB port; a charging cable alone is not enough.
- Unlock the phone and check whether it is waiting for a USB debugging approval prompt.
- Run
adb devicesto check whether ADB sees the device. If it does not, reconnect the cable and verify USB debugging is on. - For wireless use, confirm the devices can reach one another on the network; guest Wi-Fi or router client isolation can prevent that.
ADB reports “unauthorized”
- Unlock the phone and accept the Allow USB debugging? prompt.
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable. If the prompt does not return, open Developer options and choose Revoke USB debugging authorizations, then reconnect and approve again.
- Use Always allow from this computer only on a trusted computer you control.
The screen appears, but mouse or keyboard input fails
Some manufacturers impose extra input restrictions. The scrcpy documentation notes that certain Xiaomi devices may require USB debugging (Security Settings) in Developer options in addition to ordinary USB debugging; enabling it may require a reboot. Check the official scrcpy documentation for device-specific behavior. If only one app ignores input, the app may block simulated control.
The mirrored screen is black or an app refuses to work
Privacy mode, protected video, banking and payment apps, corporate security rules, or other protected surfaces may block capture or remote input. A black screen in those cases can be an intentional security restriction rather than a cable or mirroring failure. Do not treat a remote-control app as a way around those protections.
A wireless or remote session drops
- For scrcpy, check the phone’s Wi-Fi reachability, router client isolation, and whether the device remains authorized.
- For any method, check that the phone stays powered on and that battery or background-app settings are not stopping the app that provides the connection.
- Reopen the app, reapprove any permission prompt, and reconnect. Menus for background activity vary by phone maker.
Phone Link does not show Phone screen
Confirm that the exact phone model and market support Phone screen, that both devices meet Microsoft’s requirements, and that they are on the same Wi-Fi network. Pairing the devices alone does not guarantee Phone screen or Apps will be available.
The phone is locked or offline
Remote-control tools are not lock-screen bypasses. If the phone needs its passcode, is awaiting a first-time permission prompt, is offline, or has been factory reset, a person may need to handle and configure it locally before control can resume.
Secure the connection and remove access you no longer need
- Download scrcpy, remote-support apps, plug-ins, and add-ons from their official sources rather than third-party bundles.
- On a shared or temporary computer, revoke USB debugging authorizations after use. Turn off USB debugging or Developer options when you do not need them.
- Do not expose ADB ports to the public internet. Use an appropriately secured private network or a remote-access service intended for internet connections.
- Use a strong account password and multifactor authentication where the remote-service provider offers them.
- Prefer an attended session when helping someone. Do not enable unattended access on a personal phone unless you understand who can connect and how access is revoked.
- When finished with a service that uses Accessibility or screen capture, disable the related permission or remove the add-on if you no longer need it.
With cloud-connected services, check the provider’s current privacy and security documentation for how connections and session data are handled; do not assume that a remote session stays only on your local network.
Quick Recap
Which option should you use?
- Try Phone Link first if you have a supported Android phone and Windows PC.
- Choose scrcpy over USB for free, responsive local control across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Choose AirDroid Personal when you need personal access over the internet and accept its setup and permission requirements.
- Choose an attended support product to help another person, or a managed business service when unattended access and fleet administration are genuinely required.
- Use AnyDesk only after confirming that the exact phone has plug-in support for the input control you need.
