You connect the extension to your Square merchant account, select a Square business location, configure payment and synchronization options, then enable Square in WooCommerce checkout. The documented integration is not a standalone payment form for a WordPress site without WooCommerce.
What you need before connecting Square to WordPress
Check these requirements before installing the extension:
- An active Square merchant account in a supported market: the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, Spain, France or Japan.
- A WooCommerce store on WordPress, with Square and WooCommerce currency settings matching.
- SSL enabled on the site. Square requires HTTPS for gateway payment processing.
- A compatible WordPress, WooCommerce and PHP release. WooCommerce documentation currently lists PHP 7.4+, WordPress 5.8+ and WooCommerce 9.4+ on its setup guide, while its payment-settings documentation lists WooCommerce 6.8+ and the extension listing has its own requirements. Because those minimums are not identical, check the current extension listing and your installed release before upgrading.
- Background processing enabled if you want automatic product synchronization.
opcache.save_commentsenabled for the plugin and product-sync operation.- Access to the Square account owner login. The owner must authorize the connection.
How do I connect Square to WooCommerce?
1. Install WooCommerce Square
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for WooCommerce Square.
- Install the plugin identified as the WooCommerce Square extension, then select Activate.
The extension is listed as free. Your store still needs a functioning WooCommerce checkout and the prerequisites above.
2. Start the Square connection
- Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Square.
- Choose the option to connect your Square account.
- Sign in to Square as the account owner and approve the requested access.
- When Square sends you back to WordPress, confirm the returning site URL if prompted.
- Select the Square business location to use.
The setup guide supports either Square production authorization or a sandbox configuration. Only one Square location can be linked at a time in this setup; products and inventory associated with the selected location are the ones synchronized.

How do I add Square payments to WordPress?
Choose what the extension should do
WooCommerce Square separates payment processing from catalog and inventory synchronization. You can use it for payments only, for synchronization only, or for both.
| Configuration | Best for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Payments only | A WooCommerce store that needs Square at online checkout but manages products elsewhere | Processes supported Square payment methods through WooCommerce |
| Payments plus product/inventory sync | A business that wants Square and WooCommerce stock and catalog data connected | Processes payments and synchronizes products and inventory for the selected Square location |
Configure synchronization
If you enable synchronization, choose the desired sync direction and location in the Square settings. The integration can also synchronize order fulfillment in both directions according to WooCommerce’s overview. Confirm which system should be authoritative for product and stock changes before turning on automatic updates, particularly when the same catalog is edited in both systems.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
Enable Square at checkout
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
- Find the Square payment method.
- Open its settings, confirm the connected account and payment options, and save.
- Turn the Square method on so it appears at checkout.
Available methods can include cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Gift Cards and Cash App Pay. Availability depends on the merchant’s country, currency and Square eligibility; Cash App Pay is documented as US-only.
Sandbox or production: which should you use?
| Mode | Use it for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Sandbox | Testing checkout, order creation and configuration without charging customers | Uses Square’s test environment; transactions are not live payments |
| Production | Real customer purchases | Charges the connected live Square account |
Test in sandbox first when you are changing payment or synchronization settings. Switch to production only after you have checked the checkout flow, order status and any catalog-sync behavior you rely on.

- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Immediate capture versus authorization
If your fulfillment process needs to reserve funds and capture them later, use an authorization workflow rather than an immediate charge. WooCommerce states: Square authorizations expire after 6 days.
Capture the authorized payment within that period; after six days, a new authorization is required. If you do not need delayed capture, an immediate charge avoids that expiry decision.
Why won’t Square connect to WooCommerce?
“Unauthorized” appears during connection
Sign out and reconnect while logged in as the Square account owner. A staff login or another non-owner account may not have permission to authorize the WooCommerce application.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.

The Square option is missing or will not enable
- Confirm WooCommerce is installed and active; this integration is not a general WordPress gateway independent of WooCommerce.
- Check the extension’s current version requirements against your WordPress, WooCommerce and PHP versions.
- Verify that SSL is active and the site loads over HTTPS.
- Review the WooCommerce payment settings after connecting and save the gateway configuration.
Products or stock are not syncing
- Confirm that synchronization is enabled rather than payments-only mode.
- Check that the intended Square location is selected; only the linked location’s associated catalog and inventory are synchronized.
- Verify background processing and that
opcache.save_commentsis enabled. - Review the selected sync direction so changes are flowing from the system you actually edit.
Customers cannot use a particular payment method
Payment methods have market and currency conditions. Verify that the merchant country, WooCommerce currency and Square account eligibility support the method before treating a missing wallet or Cash App Pay option as a plugin fault.
What this integration does not provide
The documented route is a WooCommerce extension. The available guidance does not establish a supported Square payment form for an ordinary WordPress page without WooCommerce. It also does not require a Square card reader or other physical hardware for WooCommerce online checkout.
