The right way to connect multiple WordPress sites depends on what “connect” means. Use WordPress Multisite when sites should share one installation and network administration; use Jetpack Manage when separate sites need one ready-made management dashboard; and use the WordPress REST API when you need automated publishing, synchronization, reporting, or a custom control panel.

Choose the architecture before changing any site

These approaches solve different problems. Multisite joins sites at the infrastructure level. Jetpack Manage leaves installations separate but gives an operator a central view. The REST API connects sites through software and HTTP requests, so your team controls the workflow.

Requirement Best fit What is shared Main trade-off
One organization, common hosting and network administration WordPress Multisite WordPress core files; plugins and themes can be shared Sites become operationally coupled at the network level
Independent client or brand sites managed by one operator Jetpack Manage A management dashboard and connected account Each site remains a separate installation and service requirements apply
Cross-site publishing, synchronization, reporting, or a custom dashboard WordPress REST API Data exchanged through JSON and authenticated HTTP requests Requires development, credentials, and synchronization design

Option 1: WordPress Multisite for a shared network

WordPress defines Multisite as “a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files.” Sites can share plugins and themes while keeping separate media directories and database tables. See the official WordPress Multisite network documentation.

When Multisite is appropriate

  • The sites belong to one organization or operating team.
  • They can run on the same hosting environment.
  • A network administrator should control common plugins, themes, and infrastructure.
  • You accept that maintenance, upgrades, and some failures can affect the network together.

Decisions and prerequisites

  1. Choose the URL structure. Decide between subdomains, such as site1.example.com, and subdirectories, such as example.com/site1, before setup.
  2. Plan web-server rewriting. Multisite requires URL rewriting. The configuration differs for Apache, IIS, and Nginx; WordPress documentation notes that WordPress cannot generate the Nginx configuration for you. Follow the instructions for your server in the Multisite administration documentation.
  3. Prepare DNS and domains. Subdomains need appropriate DNS records. If each site will use its own domain, account for domain mapping; native domain mapping is available in WordPress 4.5 and later.
  4. Confirm backups and recovery. Because the network shares core infrastructure, test restoration of both the network database and each site’s media before moving production sites.

How administration works

A Network Administrator manages network-wide settings, themes, and plugins, while individual site administrators manage content and site-level settings permitted by the network. This centralization is efficient for a controlled group of sites, but it also means a network-level change can have broader consequences than a change on one standalone installation.

Option 2: Jetpack Manage for separate installations

Jetpack Manage provides a single place to monitor multiple WordPress sites while leaving each site separately hosted and administered. Its requirements include a dedicated WordPress.com account, a host that meets WordPress requirements, current WordPress software, publicly accessible sites, and publicly accessible XML-RPC files. Review the Jetpack Manage requirements before connecting anything.

Add each site to the dashboard

  1. Sign in to the site’s WP Admin with an Administrator account.
  2. Install and activate Jetpack.
  3. Open Jetpack → My Jetpack.
  4. Choose the connection option, connect the site and your WordPress.com user account, and approve the connection.
  5. Repeat these steps for every additional site. The detailed workflow is documented in Jetpack’s add-sites instructions.

What this model is good at

  • Keeping client, brand, or project sites independent.
  • Giving one operator a consolidated place to monitor connected sites.
  • Avoiding a migration into a shared Multisite installation.

Important Multisite limitations

Jetpack’s Multisite guidance says Jetpack Backup and Jetpack Scan do not support Multisite. It also states that, for most plans, each site in a Multisite network needs its own Jetpack plan, while some features require a network-level connection. Check the current Jetpack Multisite documentation for feature-specific behavior before choosing this combination.

Option 3: WordPress REST API for automation and synchronization

The REST API is a distributed connection: every WordPress site exposes its own API root and endpoints. Responses use JSON and standard HTTP methods, and the API supports discovery through the index or OPTIONS requests. The official reference is at WordPress REST API Reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the REST API when you need software, not just a dashboard

  • Publish an article to several sites from one internal tool.
  • Pull posts, pages, media, or other data into a reporting system.
  • Synchronize selected fields between a source site and destination sites.
  • Build a custom control panel with site-specific permissions and workflows.

Design the integration safely

  1. Discover each site. Start with its API index and inspect available routes; use OPTIONS requests where the endpoint supports them.
  2. Define ownership. Decide which site is authoritative for titles, body content, taxonomies, media, and publication status. Without a source-of-truth rule, two-way synchronization can overwrite edits.
  3. Choose authentication. Content-management actions that require login need an authentication token. Store tokens securely, restrict their permissions, and rotate or revoke them when staff or systems change.
  4. Handle pagination and links. The REST API handbook covers pagination, linking, and embedding. Implement pagination rather than assuming one response contains every record.
  5. Make retries safe. Record the destination post ID, request status, and last successful update so a failed request can be retried without creating duplicates.
  6. Test media and formatting. Confirm that image references, embedded content, categories, and authors exist on the destination before publishing automatically.

WordPress.com and connected self-hosted sites

WordPress.com documents that its REST API can view, create, or edit content on WordPress.com sites and on self-hosted WordPress.org sites connected through Jetpack. Actions that require login use an authentication token, and the API can enumerate associated sites and their capabilities. See WordPress.com’s API getting-started guide.

How to decide between the three

Use Multisite if infrastructure should be shared

Choose it for a coordinated network with common hosting, centralized plugin and theme administration, and a single organization responsible for operations. Do not choose it merely because several sites exist; the shared installation is the key architectural commitment.

Use Jetpack Manage if independence matters

Choose it when sites should retain separate hosting, databases, release schedules, and administrators, but one person or team still needs a consolidated management view.

Pre-production checklist

  • Confirm whether the sites may share hosting and operational risk.
  • Choose subdomains or subdirectories before creating a Multisite network.
  • Verify DNS, URL rewriting, and server-specific configuration.
  • Confirm domain-mapping requirements for custom domains.
  • List who can administer the network, each site, and any API integration.
  • Test backups and a restoration procedure before migration or bulk publishing.
  • For Jetpack, verify WordPress.com accounts, public access, XML-RPC availability, and plan requirements.
  • For API work, document endpoints, authentication tokens, pagination, field ownership, duplicate prevention, and retry behavior.

Bottom line

There is no universal “connect” button. Multisite is the shared-installation choice, Jetpack Manage is the separate-sites dashboard choice, and the REST API is the programmable integration choice. Make the hosting, administration, URL, backup, and automation decisions first; then implement the architecture that matches them.
