Some Roku TVs can pair directly with Bluetooth headphones; many cannot. On your TV, check Home > Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones. If that option is available, use it to pair your headphones. If it is missing, try the Roku mobile app: pair the headphones with your phone or tablet, then tap the app’s Headphone icon. The app method works only with compatible Roku devices, and the phone and Roku must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Check whether your Roku TV supports direct Bluetooth headphones
Having Roku software—or Bluetooth for a remote or another feature—does not necessarily mean a TV can send its audio to Bluetooth headphones. The quickest check is the menu on the TV: go to Home > Settings > Remotes & devices. If you see Wireless headphones, the device supports Roku’s direct Headphone Mode. Roku says this option appears only on compatible devices.
As of August 18, 2026, Roku lists these Roku TV families for direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode: Roku Select Series 4K TVs from 2025, Roku Plus Series TVs, and Roku Pro Series TVs. Roku TVs made by other manufacturers may differ, so check the exact model and the menu on your set rather than assuming that every TV running Roku OS has the feature. See Roku’s current compatibility list.
To find the model number, go to Home > Settings > System > About. This is especially useful if you have a separate Roku player or a Roku TV whose series name is unclear.

Other Roku devices with direct Headphone Mode
If you use a Roku player or soundbar with your TV, the relevant device—not necessarily the TV—is what matters. Roku’s listed compatible models include:
- Roku Streambar SE, Roku Streambar, Roku Streambar Pro, and Roku Smart Soundbar
- Roku Streaming Stick, model 3840, and Roku Streaming Stick Plus, model 3830
- Roku Ultra, models 4800, 4802, and 4850; and Roku Ultra LT, model 4801
Roku lists the Roku Express, Roku Premiere, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, and Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ as not supporting direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode. Model numbers matter: do not assume every Ultra or Streaming Stick has the same capability.

Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with a compatible Roku
Your headphones must support Bluetooth 4.2 or newer, according to Roku. Put them into pairing mode using the headphone maker’s instructions; simply turning them on may not make them discoverable.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Remotes & devices.
- Select Wireless headphones.
- Choose Add new wireless headphones.
- Select your headphones when they appear, and confirm if prompted.
When Headphone Mode is active, the TV’s built-in speakers or other connected audio output are muted, so the program plays privately through the headphones. Direct pairing is generally one headphone listening session at a time; it is not a way to send TV audio to several Bluetooth headsets simultaneously.

Reconnect headphones you have already paired
Pairing registers the headphones with the Roku for the first time. Connecting activates headphones already registered. After the first pairing, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones and select the headphones to connect. On compatible devices, they may reconnect automatically when powered on and nearby.
Automatic reconnection is not guaranteed to remain active indefinitely: Roku notes that headphones may disconnect after the screensaver starts or after several minutes without audio. If they do not reconnect, open the Wireless headphones menu and select them again. Headphone buttons such as play, pause, next, or previous may work, but controls vary by headset.

No Wireless headphones option? Use the Roku mobile app
The Roku app’s Headphone Mode is a workaround for compatible Roku devices that do not pair headphones directly. In this setup, the headphones pair with your phone or tablet—not the TV—and the Roku app routes Roku audio to that mobile device. Roku’s mobile Headphone Mode instructions require the phone or tablet and Roku device to be on the same wireless network.

- Install or update the official Roku mobile app on your iOS or Android device.
- Connect the phone or tablet to the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku TV or player.
- Pair your Bluetooth headphones with the phone or tablet in its Bluetooth settings.
- Open the Roku app and select the Roku device you want to control.
- Open the app’s remote control and tap the Headphone icon.
- Start playback and set a comfortable, safe volume.
Roku says up to four mobile devices can use app Headphone Mode at once. That limit applies to mobile devices using the app, not to four headsets directly paired with the TV. The phone’s battery and Wi-Fi connection are part of the audio path, so keep the phone connected and nearby. If the app does not show a Headphone icon, the Roku device may not support mobile Headphone Mode.
Will headphones work with a cable box or game console?
Not necessarily. On a Roku Streambar or soundbar, Headphone Mode can carry audio from its built-in Roku streaming player. Roku says that mobile Headphone Mode does not cover external sources such as a game console, Blu-ray player, or cable box connected to the TV. A Streambar or soundbar may carry TV audio over HDMI ARC or optical for normal listening, but that does not mean its Headphone Mode routes every external input to headphones. Check Roku’s source limitations if your setup uses a Streambar.
If you need private audio from an external HDMI device, a TV-level Bluetooth transmitter or another wired audio route may be an option, depending on the TV’s audio outputs and settings. That is a third-party workaround, not Roku Headphone Mode; check that the transmitter supports your TV’s output and consider possible audio delay.

- Wired headphones and a compatible Roku remote: Some Roku voice remotes have a headphone jack for private listening. This requires wired headphones. Roku notes that using a wired headset through the remote can deactivate mobile Headphone Mode, so do not expect both methods to work together.
- A compatible Roku Streambar or soundbar: Some models support Headphone Mode and can also serve as TV audio equipment, but their headphone feature has the external-source limitation above.
- A Bluetooth transmitter: For a TV without Roku Headphone Mode, a transmitter connected to a supported TV audio output can send sound to Bluetooth headphones. This depends on the TV and transmitter and may add latency.

Which method should you choose?
- Use direct Bluetooth pairing if your Roku has the Wireless headphones menu and you want the simplest regular setup without a phone in the audio path.
- Use the Roku app if direct pairing is unavailable but the app shows the Headphone icon and your phone and Roku can share a Wi-Fi network.
- Use wired headphones or a separate audio route if neither Roku method supports your device, you need audio from an external HDMI source, or wireless delay is unacceptable.
