Connect an image-generation API to MCP by running a server that exposes a narrowly scoped tool, such as generate_image. The MCP client discovers the tool and supplies structured arguments; your server validates them, calls the image provider with credentials kept on the server, then returns the result in a form the specific client can handle. For a single prompt-based image or edit, OpenAI recommends its Image API; for conversational generation and iterative editing, use the Responses API. Choose local or remote transport to match the MCP host.
What MCP does in an image-generation integration
MCP is the adapter contract between an AI client and your service. Your server advertises tools with names, descriptions, and input schemas. The client discovers those tools, the model selects one and provides arguments, and the server runs the handler and returns a result. MCP can also expose resources and prompts, but a focused image-generation integration can start with one tool.
The important boundary is that MCP does not generate the image itself. Your handler calls an image-generation provider, handles its response, and translates that response into MCP content the client understands. Keep provider keys and authorization logic inside the server, not in the tool schema or model-visible arguments.

Choose the API and workflow first
| Need | API approach | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One prompt produces an image or a single edit | OpenAI Image API | OpenAI recommends the Image API for a single prompt-based generation or edit. |
| Conversation with follow-up edits or image context | OpenAI Responses API with image generation | It supports conversational, editable image experiences and multi-turn interaction. |
These recommendations describe OpenAI’s APIs; other image providers may have different endpoints and interaction models. Keep the MCP tool interface provider-neutral only where that helps your application. If the provider’s controls differ substantially, make the tool description and schema explicit rather than implying unsupported options.

OpenAI’s current image documentation names gpt-image-2.5-sunburst and gpt-image-2.5-flare for direct Image API use and the Responses API image-generation tool. It also describes customization of output quality, size, format, and compression, and says organization verification may be required for GPT Image models. Model availability, account eligibility, parameters, and pricing can change; verify them in the live documentation and your account before implementation or cost estimates.
Design a small, bounded MCP tool
Start with a stable tool name such as generate_image and a description that says what it does, what arguments it accepts, and whether it creates an external paid-provider request. Define only controls your chosen provider and use case support. Typical inputs include a required prompt and, where available, bounded choices for size, quality, or output format. Do not accept API credentials as tool arguments.
Validate at the handler boundary even when the client submits schema-shaped arguments. Reject missing or excessive prompt text, unsupported values, and requests outside the user’s authorization before making a provider call. Bound the tool’s scope so a prompt cannot quietly turn it into an unrestricted network or file-access capability.

Tool annotations must reflect real behavior. Image generation makes an external request and may incur provider cost; do not mark it as a harmless read-only lookup. Use the host’s approval controls where appropriate, especially when user prompts or attached images may contain sensitive information.
Implement the server in your team’s runtime
OpenAI’s MCP server guide lists the TypeScript package @modelcontextprotocol/sdk and the Python package mcp. Choose the runtime your deployment can support, follow the current SDK examples, and pin compatible dependency versions. SDK APIs and response content types evolve, so use the current package documentation rather than copying an old initialization or result-format snippet.
Handler flow
- Read the provider credential from server configuration or a secret manager.
- Validate the incoming tool arguments and enforce authorization for this request.
- Call the selected image API using its current request format and supported model.
- Handle provider errors and convert returned image data to the MCP SDK’s expected content shape.
- Return useful metadata or a client-supported image/file result without exposing secrets.
Image API examples may represent returned image bytes as base64. Decode or pass the data according to the SDK and host contract. Do not assume every MCP client renders image content the same way: some clients may render an image, some may expose a file reference, and others may require you to save an artifact and return an appropriate reference. Confirm this end to end with your exact SDK and MCP client.

Choose local or remote transport
| Deployment | Use it when | Check before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Local server process | The MCP client can launch and communicate with a local process. | Client launch configuration, local environment variables or secret handling, and process lifecycle. |
| Remote HTTPS server | The tool should be reachable as a hosted service. | Host support for the transport, stable endpoint, authentication, reachability, and monitoring. |
| Private server through a supported tunnel | The target integration supports access to a private/local server through a tunnel. | Tunnel configuration, access controls, and the host’s current connection requirements. |
For OpenAI Responses API MCP connections, the documented configuration uses server_url for a remote server or tunnel_id for a private server reachable through Secure MCP Tunnel. The integration documents Streamable HTTP or HTTP/SSE for remote MCP servers. Production guidance calls for a stable HTTPS endpoint using Streamable HTTP. Other MCP hosts may support different connection modes, so verify the host’s current documentation rather than reusing OpenAI-specific connection settings.
Connect and verify the tool
- Start the server using the official SDK’s current setup and transport instructions.
- Use MCP Inspector to verify initialization and that the expected tool appears in the tool list.
- Call the tool with a representative valid prompt, then inspect the returned content and confirm the target host can display or access the image.
- Try invalid and excessive arguments, provider failures, unauthorized requests, and out-of-scope requests. Confirm they fail safely and do not reveal credentials.
- Connect from the intended client. For OpenAI Responses API, configure the remote
server_urlor supported Secure MCP Tunneltunnel_id, then inspect tool-list and tool-call results. - Review what prompt and image data crosses your server boundary and what is sent to the provider before deploying for real users.
Testing should cover direct requests, indirect requests induced by conversation, edge cases, and out-of-scope requests. A successful tool call alone does not establish that authorization, result display, or failure handling works correctly.
Security, reliability, and cost controls
- Protect credentials: Keep API keys out of schemas, arguments, prompts, returned text, and public logs. Load them from server-side configuration or a secret manager.
- Enforce authorization on every call: Validate who may generate images and which data or provider account the request may use. A schema is not an authorization boundary.
- Limit abuse and spend: Bound input sizes and supported options, reject malformed requests early, and consider how prompt injection or repeated calls could drive provider usage.
- Protect sensitive content: For remote services, review information sent to the server and provider, the remote operator’s terms and retention practices, and any approval requirements.
- Operate the service: Use secure transport, stable endpoints, appropriate logs and monitoring, and a plan for provider or server errors. Avoid logging secrets or unnecessary prompt/image data.
- Test failure paths: Handle invalid inputs, authorization failures, provider errors, timeouts, and unusable output explicitly; return understandable errors without leaking implementation details.
There is no universal MCP image-result shape established across SDK and client combinations. Treat rendering as a compatibility issue to test, not a feature to promise in advance.

Common connection and output problems
The client does not list the tool
Check that the server initializes successfully, registers the tool under the expected name, and uses a transport the host supports. With a remote connection, verify endpoint reachability, transport compatibility, and authentication. With a local process, check the host’s launch configuration and server output.
The tool appears but generation fails
Check required arguments and supported parameter values, then inspect the provider error safely on the server. Verify that the credential is present in server configuration, that the account can use the selected model, and whether organization verification is required. Do not pass the key through the tool call as a workaround.
The call succeeds but no image is visible
The provider response may contain encoded bytes that need conversion, or the client may not render the MCP result type you returned. Confirm the SDK content format and host support; test whether the client needs image content or a saved artifact reference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the image-generation API key be supplied by the MCP client?
No. Keep it in server configuration or a secret manager, and enforce authorization in the server for each request.
Does MCP itself generate or display the image?
No. The server calls the image provider; whether the client displays the returned image depends on its supported result format.
Can any MCP client connect to the same server configuration?
Not necessarily. Local launch support, transports, authentication, and image-result rendering vary by host.
