The best method depends on what you want to do:

Android-to-Roku compatibility is not universal. Screen-mirroring controls vary by phone manufacturer, and some Google-branded phones have limitations. Casting from a supported app and using the official Roku app are often more reliable.
Before you connect
- Turn on the Roku and leave it at the Home screen.
- Connect Android and Roku to the same ordinary home Wi-Fi network. Guest Wi-Fi, VPNs, mobile hotspots, and router client isolation can prevent discovery.
- Enable Wi-Fi on Android and update Android, the Roku software, and any apps you plan to use.
- For casting, install the matching app or Roku channel on both devices.
- Find the Roku model at Settings > System > About. Menu wording can vary slightly by model and software version.
Roku says most current-generation players and Roku TVs support screen mirroring, but not all do. Roku’s general guidance says Android 10.0 or later is likely to support mirroring, not that every Android 10 phone is guaranteed to work. Google-branded devices such as Pixel and Nexus models are a notable exception in Roku’s guidance.
Check Roku’s current screen-mirroring compatibility guidance before troubleshooting a connection that never appears.
How to mirror an Android screen to Roku
Use mirroring when you need to display a browser, game, unsupported app, document, or the entire Android interface. It duplicates the phone screen, so notifications and other phone activity may also appear on the TV.

On a Samsung phone
- Pull down the status bar to open Quick Settings. Swipe across if necessary.
- Tap Smart View.
- Select your Roku device.
- Use the Roku remote to approve the request on the TV.
On other Android phones
- Open Quick Settings or Android Settings.
- Look for Cast, Screen Cast, Screen Mirroring, Wireless Display, Display Mirroring, SmartShare, Quick Connect, or a similar manufacturer-specific feature.
- Select the Roku device.
- Approve the request on the TV.
There is no single Android menu path: manufacturers use different names and place the feature in different locations. If Roku displays a permission prompt, choose:
- Allow for the current session.
- Always allow to accept future requests from that device without another prompt.
- Block to reject the current attempt.
- Always block to reject future attempts and add the device to the blocked list.
After approval, the Android display should appear on the TV. To stop mirroring, press Home on the Roku remote or disconnect from Android’s mirroring controls.
How to cast YouTube, Netflix, and other apps
Casting is usually the better choice for video. The Roku plays the content through its own app while Android acts as a controller. You can use the phone for other tasks, and Roku says casting can continue even if the phone is powered off.
- Install the service’s Android app and add its matching channel to Roku if it is not already installed.
- Put Android and Roku on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Android app and start playback if the Cast button is not immediately visible.
- Tap the Cast icon.
- Select the Roku device.
- If prompted, choose the appropriate profile on Roku with the remote.
The matching Roku channel does not necessarily need to be open first; Roku says it can launch automatically when casting begins. Profile-based services such as Netflix may still require profile selection on the TV.
If an app plays on Android but has no Cast icon, it may not support Roku casting. The icon may appear only after playback starts, or the app, channel, network, or content may be incompatible. Screen mirroring is a possible fallback only when both the phone and Roku support it. Content-protection rules can also prevent a mirrored movie or show from displaying even when the rest of the phone screen is visible.

Use Android as a Roku remote
Install the official Roku mobile app when your goal is remote control rather than displaying the phone screen. It can provide a virtual remote, content search, app launching, supported voice controls, private listening, and personal photo or video sharing.

- Connect Android and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the app and wait for it to discover Roku devices.
- Tap your Roku to connect.
Roku lists Android 5.0 or later and Roku OS 6.2 or later as compatibility requirements, although individual features vary by device. Use Roku’s official app rather than an unknown third-party remote app; Roku warns against third-party Roku-control apps for security reasons.
If the official app cannot control the device, Roku provides Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Control by mobile apps. Options include Limited, Enabled, and Permissive. Use the least permissive setting that fixes the problem; do not enable Permissive unnecessarily on a normal home network.

Important Pixel and Roku compatibility limits
Do not assume that every Android phone can mirror to Roku. Roku specifically identifies Google-branded phones, including Pixel and Nexus models running Android 6.0 or later, as an exception in its screen-mirroring guidance. A Pixel may still cast from supported apps such as YouTube or Netflix and can use the Roku mobile app, but its native Android Cast feature should not be assumed to mirror the entire display to Roku.

A newer Roku may improve player performance, but buying one does not guarantee compatibility with an Android phone whose mirroring protocol is unsupported.
Roku model exceptions
Roku lists these specific screen-mirroring exceptions:
- Roku Express: supported on models 3960, 3930, and 3900; not supported on model 3700.
- Roku Express+: supported on models 3931 and 3910; not supported on model 3710.
- Model 3910: mirroring works through HDMI, not composite/A/V output.
Because support varies by model, check Settings > System > About and compare the exact model with Roku’s current information.
Troubleshooting: Roku does not appear
Missing from Android’s mirroring list
- Confirm the Roku model supports screen mirroring.
- Move both devices to the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
- Disable VPNs and avoid isolated hotspots.
- Restart the phone, Roku, and router.
- Update Android and Roku.
- Search Android Settings for “screen mirror,” “wireless display,” or “Smart View.”
- Check whether the phone is a Pixel or another Google-branded model affected by Roku’s limitation.
- Try casting from a supported app instead.
Missing from an app’s Cast list
Verify that the Roku channel and Android app both support the service, that both devices remain on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the apps are updated. Start playback before looking for the Cast icon. If the service does not support Roku casting, use another supported method rather than assuming the network is broken.

Roku appears but rejects the connection
Choose Allow or Always allow on the TV. If the device was previously blocked, review the Roku’s mirroring permissions or settings and retry. Restart Android’s mirroring feature and keep the phone within reliable Wi-Fi range.
It connects, but video is black
The app may allow casting but block screen mirroring because of DRM or other content-protection rules. Resolution, HDR, and playback support can also differ between the phone, app, and Roku. Mirroring does not bypass streaming-service restrictions.
The connection drops or audio is wrong
Keep both devices on the same network, disable VPNs, and restart the app or Roku. Mirroring follows the phone’s orientation, volume, and display activity. Incoming calls and notifications may interrupt or appear on the TV. For presentations, rotate the phone before connecting and enable Do Not Disturb.

- Screen mirroring: best for the whole Android screen, unsupported apps, documents, and games—but it requires a compatible phone and Roku and keeps the phone active.
- App casting: best for supported video services because Roku handles playback independently of the phone.
- Roku mobile app: best for remote control, search, app launching, private listening, and supported personal-media sharing.
If none of these works, an HDMI adapter may help only if the Android phone supports wired video output. Otherwise, a different streaming platform may be necessary when full-device mirroring from an incompatible phone is essential.

Can a Pixel mirror to Roku?
Do not assume it can. Roku identifies Pixel and other Google-branded phones as exceptions in its screen-mirroring guidance, although Pixel phones can still cast from supported apps and use the Roku mobile app.
Do Android and Roku need the same Wi-Fi?
Yes for normal casting and Roku mobile-app discovery. Guest networks, VPNs, hotspots, and router isolation can prevent the devices from finding each other.
Can I use Roku without its physical remote?
Usually, yes: install the official Roku mobile app while the phone and Roku are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Why does YouTube cast but another app does not?
Casting is app-specific. An app can play on Android without supporting Roku casting, or it may require playback to start before showing the Cast icon.
Can I mirror Android to Roku without Wi-Fi?
The documented wireless methods require network connectivity and same-network discovery. A compatible wired HDMI adapter is a separate Android hardware option, not a Roku feature.
Does Roku support Bluetooth screen mirroring?
Bluetooth is not the documented method for mirroring an Android display to Roku. Use supported wireless mirroring, app casting, or compatible wired video output instead.
How do I disconnect Android from Roku?
Stop mirroring from Android’s Cast or Smart View controls, or press Home on the Roku remote. For casting, stop playback or disconnect from the Cast control.
