Connect an AI coding agent to image or PDF generation by giving it a tool it can invoke: a built-in image-generation tool, an application-owned function, or an MCP server. Choose based on where the generator runs and how the result must reach your user. For images, preserve the returned bytes or file reference; for PDFs, also return or store a usable artifact reference rather than leaving the file inside a temporary execution environment.
For a public generator, a hosted MCP connection or an application function is usually the simplest route. Use environment-origin HTTP or a local stdio server when the generator can only be reached from your own environment. If your workflow needs code to create and return a document, Code Interpreter is another PDF path.
Choose the connection pattern that matches the generator
The agent does not create access to an image or PDF service by itself. Your application or agent runtime must expose a callable tool, provide the credentials and network access that tool needs, and handle the result. These are the main patterns:

OpenAI’s tools guide describes image generation, remote MCP servers and function tools as tool categories configured through the tools parameter. Its Agents SDK documentation describes MCP as an open protocol for providing context to language models; the MCP connection guide explains that an MCP server publishes tool definitions and runs tool calls. The SDK transport options include hosted, Streamable HTTP, SSE and stdio. Select a transport based on reachability, not merely convenience: a provider-side hosted connection cannot reach a private service that is visible only inside your network.

Connect a built-in image-generation tool
Use the built-in route when the provider exposes image generation as a tool and you do not need to operate a separate generation server. In an OpenAI integration, configure the supported image-generation tool in the request’s tools list, then submit an instruction that describes the requested image. The agent can invoke that tool as part of its turn; your application still needs to surface the resulting image or artifact to the user.
- Confirm tool availability. Check the current tools guide and the model or API edition you use for image-generation support and its accepted options. Tool names and supported arguments are provider-defined; do not assume names from a different SDK or model.
- Declare the tool. Add the image-generation tool to the request’s tools configuration. Keep any other tools, such as web search or functions, limited to what the task requires.
- Ask for the image. Include the subject, style, composition, aspect ratio or other constraints supported by that tool. Tell the agent whether it should return an image directly or use it in a later step.
- Handle the result. Read the provider’s returned image content or file reference. Save it to durable storage if it must persist beyond the current turn, then provide a stable user-facing URL or application file reference.
A minimal request has this conceptual shape; the exact request envelope and image-tool fields depend on the API and model version you are using:

The essential boundary is that tool output is not automatically a permanent file in your product. Store the bytes or retain the provider’s supported file reference before the application discards transient response data.

A function tool makes the agent request an operation from your application; your code performs the work and returns a concise result. This is a good fit if you need to validate prompts, enforce per-user limits, choose an image or PDF provider, retry transient failures, or put every generated artifact into your own storage system.

- Define a narrow function such as
generate_imageorcreate_pdf, with explicit input fields and size limits. - Give the function to the agent as a tool definition, following the function-calling format for the API you use.
- When the agent requests it, validate the arguments in application code. Do not treat model-generated values as trusted or authorize access based on a prompt alone.
- Call the provider from your backend, keeping provider credentials out of the conversation and client-side code.
- Save the resulting bytes or file to durable storage. Return a safe artifact ID or signed URL, plus a short status the agent can explain to the user.
Keep the tool response small. Returning a large base64 image or PDF through the model can increase payload size and make the conversation harder to manage. Prefer a stored artifact reference when the agent only needs to tell the user where the file is. Return image content to the model only when a later reasoning step actually needs to inspect it.
Connect a remote or local generator through MCP
MCP is useful when the generator is a separate service or process with its own tool definitions. The MCP server publishes the available tools and executes calls; the agent runtime discovers them and mediates their use. This keeps a reusable generator interface separate from any one agent, but does not remove the need to secure the server or persist returned files.
Hosted HTTP server
Use a hosted MCP connection for a public service reachable by the agent provider. In the agent configuration, identify the MCP server using the API’s supported connection settings, provide authentication through its designated authorization mechanism, and restrict the exposed tools to the ones the task needs. The exact configuration fields vary by API version; follow the current MCP connection guide rather than copying a configuration intended for another client.

Environment-origin HTTP
If a service is private or reachable only from an attached execution environment, configure the MCP connection to originate there. Verify DNS, routing, firewall rules and TLS from that environment. A successful request from your laptop does not prove that the hosted agent runtime or a separate container can reach the same address.

Local stdio process
Use stdio when the generator is a local CLI or a wrapper around an installed library. The client starts the process and exchanges MCP messages over its input and output streams. Install dependencies in the environment that launches the agent, keep standard output reserved for protocol messages, and send diagnostics to standard error or a protected log. If the process exits, the tool becomes unavailable until the client restarts it.
For any transport, expose only the operations the agent requires. A tool that can create a file should not also receive unnecessary permission to delete files, access unrelated resources or spend without limits.
Return a PDF as a user-accessible artifact
There are two useful paths. A PDF library or dedicated PDF service can run behind an application function or MCP tool and return bytes or a file URL. Alternatively, OpenAI Code Interpreter supports application/pdf and can return generated files through message annotations such as container_file_citation. In either case, the user needs an artifact reference, not merely a statement that a PDF was created.
- Have the tool create the PDF and report its MIME type and file reference.
- For a Code Interpreter result, inspect the message annotations for the generated file reference, including a
container_file_citationwhere present. - Move or retrieve the file into storage that remains available for the period your product promises. A temporary container reference should not be treated as permanent storage.
- Return a download link or application-managed file reference with a clear filename. Check that the link is accessible to the intended user and does not unintentionally expose another user’s document.
If users can request page ranges, paper sizes or margins, validate those inputs before passing them to a renderer. Very large documents can take longer and use more memory than a typical image request; apply size limits and communicate whether the user will receive a synchronous result or a later completion notice.

Secure the connection and make it reliable
- Trust deliberately. Connect only MCP servers you control or have reviewed. A tool call can have real effects, including spending money or generating files.
- Use least privilege. Limit credentials to the required service and operations. Put tokens in supported authorization fields, headers or a trusted vault/proxy—not in reusable agent definitions, user prompts or ordinary logs.
- Constrain discovery. Use
allowed_toolsto restrict which MCP tools are available when the API supports it. Mark a serverrequiredwhen the turn should fail if initialization fails rather than silently proceeding without the capability. - Set approvals intentionally. Require approval before sensitive or consequential operations. A read-only image request and a tool that publishes or emails a PDF do not have the same risk.
- Handle partial failure. Distinguish tool initialization errors, provider timeouts, rejected inputs and storage failures. Retry transient network errors selectively; avoid blindly repeating a non-idempotent operation that may create duplicate files or charges.
- Persist and observe. Record a request ID, tool name, duration, completion status and artifact ID while excluding secrets and unnecessary prompt content. Keep generated files in storage with access controls and a defined retention policy.
Troubleshooting common failures

Latency, cost and operational trade-offs
The available official descriptions establish the connection patterns but do not give a comparable latency, adoption or integration-cost statistic for them. In practice, total completion time depends on model reasoning, network hops, generation time, file transfer and persistence. Hosted MCP avoids operating a local process but requires a reachable service; environment MCP may add deployment work while solving private-network reachability; stdio is local but ties availability to a managed process. A custom function adds application code and control. Measure these paths in your own environment rather than assuming one is universally faster or cheaper.
Track generation and storage costs at the tool boundary. Apply per-user limits, maximum dimensions or document size, and timeouts that reflect the provider’s documented behavior. For longer jobs, return a job ID and notify the user when the artifact is ready instead of holding an interactive turn open indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same MCP server with different AI coding agents?
Often, if each client supports the server’s MCP transport and authentication method. Confirm compatibility for the specific client and transport; support for MCP in general does not guarantee identical configuration fields.
Should the agent receive the full image or PDF bytes?
Only when it needs to inspect or transform the content. For straightforward delivery, keep the artifact in storage and give the agent a file reference it can relay to the user.
