Connect a gaming headset to a Mac through its 3.5 mm jack, a USB cable or 2.4 GHz wireless receiver, or Bluetooth. The right option depends on the headset’s plug and your Mac’s ports. After connecting, choose the headset separately for sound output and microphone input in Apple menu > System Settings > Sound; then check microphone permission and the game’s audio settings if voice chat still does not work.
Choose the right connection method

A headset described as “wireless” may use Bluetooth, a proprietary 2.4 GHz USB receiver, or both. Check the headset’s manual or controls to identify its connection modes. Its audio may work on Mac even if optional features—such as EQ, virtual surround, RGB lighting, sidetone, firmware updates, or button remapping—need manufacturer software or have limited macOS support.
Before you connect
- Check the headset’s plug, receiver, and available connection modes.
- Charge and turn on a wireless headset. Find its hardware mute switch and pairing or mode controls.
- Check the Mac’s available ports. A USB-A receiver or cable needs a USB-A port or a USB-C adapter or hub that supports data.
- If you use a 3.5 mm headset, check whether it has one combined plug or separate headphone and microphone plugs.
Method 1: Connect a 3.5 mm gaming headset
- Insert the headset’s 3.5 mm plug into the Mac’s headphone jack. Apple says compatible Mac headphone ports can be used with headphones with or without a built-in microphone. A compatible combined headset connection can carry stereo output and mono microphone input. See Apple’s Mac port guidance.
- If your Mac has no headphone jack, use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter or a USB audio adapter. Check that the adapter supports a headset microphone, not just headphone output.
- If the headset has separate headphone and microphone plugs, use an adapter that combines them for a compatible headset port, or use a USB audio adapter with the appropriate separate inputs. A headphone-only adapter will not carry the mic signal.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound. In Output, select Headphones or the connected audio device. In Input, choose the headset microphone or the relevant adapter.
- Speak and check whether the input-level meter responds. Then test the microphone in your game or chat app.
If sound works but there is no microphone input, the plug may not use compatible combined headset wiring, the adapter may be output-only, or the headset may have separate connectors. A damaged or incompletely inserted plug, a muted mic, an app using a different input, or denied microphone permission can cause the same symptom.

This is usually more relevant to demanding audiophile headphones than typical gaming headsets; do not assume every Mac can drive every high-impedance headphone at the same level. Method 2: Connect a USB headset or 2.4 GHz receiver
This method covers wired USB headsets, USB sound cards, wireless headsets with a USB transmitter, and headsets with a USB-connected base station.
For a wired USB headset
- Connect the headset to a USB port. For a USB-A plug on a USB-C-only Mac, use a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or hub that supports data.
- If macOS asks to allow a newly connected accessory, approve it if you trust the device. Apple notes that Apple-silicon Macs may require approval for new USB or Thunderbolt accessories. See Apple’s guidance on connecting accessories.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound. Select the headset under Output and its microphone under Input.
- Test playback, then speak and check the input meter. You can also test the mic in Voice Memos or the game’s audio test.
For a 2.4 GHz wireless headset
- Turn on or charge the headset and connect its wireless receiver to the Mac. Use a data-capable adapter or hub if the receiver is USB-A and your Mac has only USB-C ports.
- Switch the headset to its receiver, wireless, or 2.4 GHz mode if it has multiple modes.
- In System Settings > Sound, choose the receiver or headset under both Output and Input.
- Open the game or chat app and confirm its own input and output selections.
The receiver may appear under the model name, manufacturer, “Wireless Receiver,” or a generic name such as “USB Audio Device.” It usually appears as a USB audio device, not as a Bluetooth accessory. Many such headsets are designed around a dedicated wireless audio link, which can suit gaming; exact latency and features depend on the headset, so do not assume a specific performance result. Basic sound and microphone functions may work without vendor software, while optional controls or processing may not.

If the receiver is not detected, check that the adapter supports data, reconnect it, try another port, and make sure the headset is in receiver mode rather than Bluetooth mode. A crowded or loose hub connection, a pending accessory-approval prompt, or the receiver still being attached to another device can also get in the way.
Method 3: Connect a Bluetooth gaming headset
- Turn on the headset and put it into pairing mode. The button sequence varies, so follow the headset’s manual.
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed.
- Find the headset under Nearby Devices and click Connect. These are the steps in Apple’s Bluetooth pairing guidance.
- Open System Settings > Sound. Select the headset under Output and, if available, under Input.
- Test the microphone in macOS and in the game or chat app.
Bluetooth is convenient, but it is not always the best gaming connection. Some gaming headsets do not have Bluetooth; others offer it mainly for general audio or mobile-device use. Depending on the headset and macOS behavior, using the microphone can change the available audio mode or sound quality, and latency may be more noticeable than with a cable or a dedicated receiver. Headset controls, EQ, or sidetone may also differ by connection mode. If the headset reconnects to a phone, tablet, or console, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device while pairing with the Mac.

Set up sound output and microphone input
macOS treats listening and recording as separate choices. Connecting a headset does not guarantee that both its speakers and microphone have been selected.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound.
- Under Output, select the headset and adjust the output volume. If sound is missing from one side, check that the balance control is centered.
- Under Input, select the headset microphone or receiver. Speak and watch the input meter; adjust input volume if necessary.
- Check the game or chat app’s audio settings as well. Select the headset microphone and, if offered, its output device. Temporarily turn off push-to-talk to test, check the input threshold or noise gate, and make sure the headset is not physically muted.

Allow microphone access
If the input meter responds in macOS but a game, chat app, or browser cannot hear you, check its permission: open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on access for the relevant app. Quit and reopen the app after changing permission. Check the game and a separate chat app individually; each may have its own permission and audio-device settings.
Troubleshoot common problems
No sound from the headset
- Confirm the headset is powered on, unmuted, and fully connected.
- In System Settings > Sound > Output, select it manually. Raise both Mac output volume and the headset’s hardware volume.
- Disconnect other headphones, speakers, and USB audio devices temporarily, then test again.
- Quit and reopen the game, or disconnect and reconnect the headset. If macOS still does not list it, restart the Mac.
- Test the headset on another device to help distinguish a headset problem from a Mac configuration issue.
If the Mac is connected to an external display, the display may also appear as an audio device or affect the current selection. Re-select the headset in Sound settings. For display-audio behavior, see Apple’s guidance on sound output and input settings.

Sound works, but the microphone does not
- Open System Settings > Sound > Input, select the headset mic, and check whether the meter moves as you speak.
- If it does not, check the headset’s mute switch and connection mode. For a 3.5 mm connection, verify that the adapter supports microphone input and that the plug is fully inserted.
- Test with Voice Memos or another recording app. If the meter works there, check the game’s selected input device and microphone permission.
- If the headset supports both Bluetooth and a USB receiver, try the receiver. Some headsets provide their microphone through one mode but not another.
The microphone is very quiet
- Raise input volume under System Settings > Sound > Input.
- Position the boom mic near your mouth and check for an obstruction.
- Check the headset’s hardware gain and mute controls.
- In the game or chat app, check whether an input threshold or noise gate is suppressing your voice.
- Try another connection method to see whether the issue is limited to one mode.
The headset does not appear in Sound or Bluetooth
- Confirm the headset supports the mode you are trying to use; a receiver-based headset may not appear in Bluetooth.
- For USB, check the cable, adapter, hub, receiver, and any accessory-approval prompt. Try a different data-capable port if available.
- For Bluetooth, put the headset back into pairing mode. If it was paired before, remove or forget it in Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- Check whether the headset is connected to another computer, console, or phone.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for macOS compatibility and firmware updates. Avoid installing unofficial or Windows-only drivers for basic audio.
Bluetooth connects and then disconnects
The headset may be reconnecting to another paired device, may not be fully in pairing mode, or may have a low battery or an old saved pairing record. Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices temporarily, charge and restart the headset, then forget and pair it again in the Mac’s Bluetooth settings. Restart the Mac if needed.
Audio is delayed or sounds worse during voice chat
Bluetooth behavior varies by headset and connection mode. Microphone use can sometimes change the audio mode or quality. Test the game with voice chat disabled; if sound improves, try the headset’s 2.4 GHz receiver, a wired USB or 3.5 mm connection, or a separate microphone while keeping Bluetooth for output.
Audio switches to the wrong device
Re-select the headset under System Settings > Sound, then check the game’s own device menu. Unplug unused USB audio devices, disconnect unused Bluetooth headsets, and temporarily disconnect an HDMI display if it is taking over audio. Check the selection again after the Mac wakes from sleep.

For the fewest connection variables, choose a wired connection. For wireless gaming, start with the headset’s supplied receiver if it has one. Choose Bluetooth when convenience and compatibility with multiple devices matter more than a dedicated gaming connection. On a USB-C-only Mac, a USB-C headset, USB-C receiver, or suitable USB-C audio adapter can avoid the need for a USB-A port. An adapter or USB audio device is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for every headset.
