Yes—both the DualShock 4 and DualSense can work with Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Windows PC. Start by connecting the controller to Windows and streaming through a supported browser at Xbox.com/play. USB is the simplest way to rule out pairing problems. If the browser or Xbox app still will not accept the controller, try one XInput translation tool, such as DS4Windows or Steam Input, rather than installing several at once.
Xbox publicly listed both PlayStation controllers as compatible with Xbox Cloud Gaming in its November 2024 announcement. That does not guarantee identical behavior in every browser, the Xbox PC app, or every game. Xbox’s compatibility announcement is about cloud gaming; Microsoft also cautions that PlayStation controllers may need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility in some PC games.
What you need
- A Windows PC and a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller.
- For wired play, a USB data cable: USB-C for DualSense or micro-USB for DualShock 4. A charge-only cable will not carry controller input.
- For wireless play, working Bluetooth, or a compatible Sony USB wireless adapter for DualShock 4.
- A supported browser or the Xbox PC app, plus cloud-gaming access for your account, region, device, and the game you want to play. Check Xbox’s current PC and cloud-gaming information for current plan and availability terms; these can change.
There are several separate steps between plugging in a controller and playing: Windows must receive it, the browser or app must expose it to the cloud session, and the game must accept its inputs. Seeing the controller in Windows—or using it successfully in Steam—does not prove that the Xbox app will detect it.
Connect a DualSense to Windows
USB: the best first test
- Connect the DualSense to the PC with a USB-C data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it. Windows generally detects USB controllers automatically; see Microsoft’s Windows controller guidance if it does not.
- Open a supported browser and go to Xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required cloud-gaming access, launch a cloud-playable game, and press a controller button if prompted.
- In a safe menu or tutorial, check the sticks, D-pad, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, and menu controls.
If the controller charges but is not detected, try another cable known to carry data and another USB port before changing software.

Bluetooth
- Disconnect the USB cable and turn off the controller if it is already on.
- Hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar flashes.
- On Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, make sure Bluetooth is on, and select the DualSense from the available devices.
- Open Xbox.com/play in a supported browser and test the controls in a game.
Sony documents USB and Bluetooth PC connections for the DualSense in its PlayStation PC support guide. If wireless input drops or pairing is troublesome, reconnect by USB to establish a simpler baseline.
Connect a DualShock 4 to Windows
USB
- Connect the controller using a compatible micro-USB data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it, then visit Xbox.com/play in a supported browser.
- Sign in, start a cloud-playable game, and test the controls.
Sony lists a compatible USB cable and its USB wireless adapter among DualShock 4 PC connection options. The adapter is not necessary if your PC’s Bluetooth works.
Bluetooth
- Disconnect the USB cable and make sure the controller is off.
- Hold Share and PS together until the light bar flashes.
- On Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth on, and select the controller from the available-device list.
- Open Xbox.com/play in a supported browser and test it in a game.
If the controller was recently connected to a console, phone, or tablet, it may need to be paired again when switching devices. Sony’s PC support page covers PlayStation-controller PC connections.

Start cloud gaming: browser first, app second
For a PlayStation controller, the browser is the best first route because it avoids assuming that the Xbox PC app will handle every input mode the same way.
- Connect or pair the controller before opening the browser.
- Open a supported browser and visit Xbox.com/play.
- Sign in and choose a cloud-playable game available to your account and region.
- Press a controller button when the page or game prompts you, then check movement and menu input.
Microsoft directs supported PC and Mac users to Xbox.com/play for cloud streaming. Browser, device, subscription, regional, and game availability can change, so consult Xbox’s current requirements rather than assuming every browser or title is supported.
You can also try cloud gaming from the Xbox PC app if it is available for your account. The app may be convenient for finding games and managing your account, but PlayStation-controller detection is not guaranteed to match the browser. If the app says no controller is connected, try the browser before installing a remapper. Do not confuse a controller working in a locally installed PC game with it working in an Xbox cloud session; they can use different input paths.

If Xbox Cloud Gaming does not detect the controller
Work through the connection layers in order. This avoids adding software before you know where the failure is.

For USB, try a known-good data cable and another port. For Bluetooth, remove the controller from Windows’ Bluetooth device list and pair it again. Charge it and disconnect it from other devices.
- Connect before launching the session. Close the game stream, connect or pair the controller, then refresh Xbox.com/play or reopen the app.
- Try USB. A wired connection removes Bluetooth pairing and signal issues from the test.
- Switch from the Xbox app to the browser. Test at Xbox.com/play using a supported browser. If one browser fails, try another supported browser.
- Close competing controller tools. Exit Steam, DS4Windows, DSX, reWASD, or similar utilities unless you are deliberately using one to translate input.
- Try another game. Input behavior can vary by title, so one game failing does not establish that the controller is unusable everywhere.
- Use one XInput translation layer if needed. Configure DS4Windows or Steam Input to present an Xbox-style controller, then relaunch the app or browser.
Microsoft’s Windows controller guidance notes that PlayStation controllers may need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility in some games. These are third-party compatibility tools, not a universal requirement or a guarantee that every cloud game will behave identically.
Use DS4Windows or Steam Input as a fallback
Many Windows games and Xbox-oriented applications work most predictably with XInput, the input standard used by Xbox controllers. A PlayStation controller may be visible to Windows without being presented to a game as an Xbox-style pad. A translation tool can bridge that gap.

- Close the Xbox app and browser session.
- Choose one translation layer: DS4Windows or Steam Input. Do not run both at the same time.
- Connect the controller and select an Xbox 360/XInput-style profile where the tool offers that option.
- Check the tool’s status to confirm it has created a virtual Xbox-style controller.
- If the game receives duplicate input, enable controller hiding in the utility if available, so it sees the virtual device rather than both the physical PlayStation controller and the virtual one.
- Relaunch Xbox.com/play or the Xbox app and test the game.
DS4Windows is useful for direct mapping and profiles; Steam Input is useful if Steam is already installed and you want per-game configuration. Steam may need to remain running for its input translation to work. Either option can cause wrong prompts, duplicate input, or conflicts with other controller software. If the browser already accepts the controller, native input is usually simpler.

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams Xbox games, so Xbox button prompts are normal even when you are holding a PlayStation controller. A common face-button correspondence is:

Exact assignments depend on the game, browser, driver, and any emulation profile. Some games let you change displayed button icons; many continue to show Xbox prompts. A touchpad may register as a single button rather than work as a mouse or multi-function surface. The PS button can open another Windows or software overlay—or do nothing—depending on your setup.

Basic buttons, sticks, triggers, and D-pad input are the main compatibility goal. Do not count on DualSense adaptive triggers, advanced haptics, gyro aiming, speaker output, or microphone functions in a cloud session. Rumble and touchpad behavior also vary. USB may expose more controller features than Bluetooth in some Windows games, but that does not guarantee those features will pass through Xbox Cloud Gaming; support depends on the title and platform.

Common problems and fixes
Windows does not see the controller
- Try another USB cable; a charge-only cable can power the controller without sending data.
- Try a different USB port or, for Bluetooth, remove the device and pair it again.
- Charge the controller and disconnect it from a console, phone, or tablet.
- Restart Bluetooth or Windows if pairing remains stuck.
The browser sees it, but the cloud game does not
- Connect the controller before opening or refreshing the cloud session.
- Try USB, another supported browser, or a different game.
- Close duplicate controller utilities. A private window can be a diagnostic test, but it is not a general compatibility fix.
The Xbox app says no controller is connected
Close Steam and other remappers, reconnect the controller, and test Xbox.com/play. If the app is essential, configure one XInput translation layer and relaunch it after the virtual controller appears. Restart Windows if a virtual device remains stuck.
Inputs are doubled or menus move by themselves
The game may be receiving both the real PlayStation controller and its virtual Xbox equivalent. Do not run two remappers together; close background tools or enable controller hiding in the one tool you chose. Reconnect after changing the profile and verify that the game sees only one active controller.

The controller works, but the prompts show A/B/X/Y
That is normally a prompt mismatch, not a connection failure. Xbox games use Xbox labels; emulation improves input compatibility but does not guarantee PlayStation button icons.
When an Xbox controller makes more sense
If you already own a DualShock 4 or DualSense, try the free browser route before buying anything. Consider an Xbox Wireless Controller or another Xbox-compatible XInput pad only if you want the broadest plug-and-play support, Xbox button labels, or fewer input-layer workarounds. Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless and Elite controllers among its preferred options for Xbox on PC, while noting its recommendation is biased; its current guidance is on the Xbox PC page.
