Microsoft’s built-in Windows Notepad is a minimal text editor. In 2024, it still does not offer true syntax highlighting (colored keywords, strings, comments) the way developer editors do.

No—Windows Notepad (the default app named Notepad on Windows 10/11) does not include syntax highlighting. You can change formatting like font and line wrapping, but you can’t colorize code by language.
So if your goal is “keyword / string / comment colors,” you need either a different editor or a different app built on the Notepad UI idea but with language support.
Prerequisites and what you’ll need

This is where you control syntax highlighting “how it looks.” You can change colors per token type for each language.
- Go to Settings → Style Configurator….
- Pick the language from the drop-down.
- Select a token type (example: Keywords, Strings, Comments).
- Adjust Foreground and optionally Background color.
- Repeat for other token types you care about.
- Click Save & Close.
For readability, many people keep background transparent (or match the editor background) and only change the foreground. That avoids “muddy” contrast issues on light vs dark themes.

Step 5 — Make it automatic with file associations (optional)
If you always work with certain file types, file association saves time and prevents “plain text” results caused by wrong language mode.
- Go to Settings → Preferences….
- Open the File Association section.
- Add or edit an association for an extension (example: .py → Python, .js → JavaScript).
- Save changes (apply/OK).
From then on, opening a .py file should automatically select Python mode and apply syntax highlighting.
Option B: Use Notepad3 for lightweight highlighting
Notepad3 is a fast alternative that behaves like a Notepad replacement and can provide syntax highlighting depending on configuration and installed language definitions.
Exact menu names vary by version, but the workflow is consistent: set language mode, then check style settings for tokens.

- Open the code file in Notepad3.
- Find the language selection (often under Language or similar).

File shows plain text (no colors)
- Check the editor’s language mode (Notepad++: Language menu).

Can I add syntax highlighting to the built-in Windows Notepad?
