To permanently delete Instagram, open Accounts Center and go to Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. Select the Instagram account, choose Delete account, and complete the confirmation prompts. Export anything you want to keep first: Meta says the export tool will not be available after the account is deleted.
Meta’s official instructions say the account is permanently deleted after the applicable cancellation period, which Meta commonly describes as 30 days but notes can vary by region.
Before deleting Instagram
Permanent deletion removes your Instagram profile and associated content, including photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers, according to Meta. Before confirming, complete this checklist:
- Export your information: In Instagram, open your profile, open the menu, go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information, select the Instagram profile, and follow the prompts. Labels may differ slightly by app version, language, device, or region.
- Save original photos and videos somewhere else.
- Save important messages, usernames, contact details, or business records.
- Check whether Instagram is used to sign in to another service.
- Review subscriptions, creator payments, shopping activity, or business obligations.
- Tell important contacts how to reach you elsewhere.
- If multiple Meta accounts appear in Accounts Center, verify the correct Instagram username and profile image.
Do not use an unofficial deletion service. Instagram credentials should only be entered on an official Meta or Instagram page.

Delete Instagram in the app
The same Accounts Center path generally applies on iPhone and Android, although the first settings label can vary.
- Open Instagram and sign in to the account you want to remove.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open the menu and tap Settings and activity, or the current settings entry.
- Tap Accounts Center.
- Tap Personal details.
- Tap Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the Instagram account.
- Choose Delete account, then tap Continue.
- Choose a reason if requested, enter your password if prompted, and confirm the deletion request.
Before the final confirmation, check the account name and profile image. Accounts Center can contain more than one Meta account, so selecting the wrong profile is a serious but avoidable mistake.
Delete Instagram from a computer or browser
- Sign in to Instagram in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Open the menu or settings area.
- Select Accounts Center.
- Choose Personal details.
- Select Account ownership and control.
- Select Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose the Instagram account.
- Select Delete account, choose Continue, and complete the confirmation steps.
Meta’s desktop instructions use this Accounts Center hierarchy. The exact presentation may differ between Instagram’s website, the mobile site, and linked Meta surfaces.

Making an account private also does not delete Instagram’s copy of the account data. If you are uncertain about leaving permanently, deactivation is the safer choice.

What happens after you request deletion?
Meta says the account and its information are permanently deleted after the standard 30-day period described on its help page. Meta also says the number of days available to cancel can vary by region, so do not treat 30 days as a universal guarantee.
During the pending period, the account’s content is not accessible to other people using Instagram. Logging back in may cancel the pending deletion if cancellation is still available. If you intend to leave Instagram, avoid casual logins during this period.
After the applicable cancellation period ends, Meta says the account cannot be retrieved through Instagram. Meta separately says the deletion process can take up to 90 days after it begins. This does not mean that every copy is guaranteed to disappear from every system on day 90: backup copies may remain longer for disaster recovery, software-error recovery, or data-loss prevention, and information may be retained for legal matters, terms enforcement, fraud prevention, or harm prevention.

If you change your mind, sign in to Instagram during the permitted cancellation period. If Instagram still offers a cancellation or restore option, follow the on-screen instructions. The option may not be available after the applicable deadline, and timing can vary by region.

Once deletion is permanent, Meta says the account cannot be recovered.
What if you cannot log in?
Forgotten password
Use Instagram’s normal password-reset flow and recover access through the email address or phone number connected to the account. After signing in, submit deletion through Accounts Center. Meta says you must be able to log in to request deletion.
Lost email or phone access
Try recovering the email account or phone number first, then use Instagram’s account-recovery prompts. Do not pay an unofficial “recovery” service or provide anyone with your password, backup codes, or login links.

Hacked account
Secure the associated email account first, then use Instagram’s official hacked-account recovery process. After regaining access, change reused passwords and review suspicious access before requesting deletion.

Disabled or suspended account
Recovery and deletion are different goals. If you want the account back, pursue Instagram’s appeal or review process before requesting deletion. Meta’s deletion instructions do not promise a manual deletion route for someone who cannot authenticate.

Try these practical steps:
- Update Instagram and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in.
- Try the same Accounts Center path in a desktop browser.
- Use a normal browser instead of an in-app browser.
- Try Accounts Center from another linked Meta surface, such as Facebook, if the Instagram profile appears there.
- Confirm that the correct Instagram profile is selected.
- Check whether deletion has already been scheduled.
- Wait and try again if the control is temporarily unavailable.
Interface workarounds are not guaranteed for every account, device, language, or region. Avoid third-party tools that claim to delete an account instantly.
What deletion does not erase
Account deletion cannot remove copies that other people already possess. Someone may still have screenshots, downloaded photos or videos, copied text, notifications, or records of messages. Deleting the account removes the account and associated content from Meta’s service according to Meta’s deletion process; it cannot reach another person’s device or independently stored files.
It also does not mean immediate erasure from every Meta system. The backup and legal-retention qualifications described above apply even when the user-facing account has become unavailable.

Other important consequences
Does it delete Facebook or Threads?
Do not assume so. Accounts Center may show several Meta profiles, but the deletion flow applies to the account you select. Carefully verify the Instagram account immediately before confirming.
Can you reuse the username?
Meta says you may be able to sign up again with the same username, or add it to another account, if nobody else has taken it. It is not guaranteed. A username associated with an account removed for violating Community Standards may not be available again.
Can you delete only photos?
Yes, individual posts can generally be removed without deleting the account, but that is not equivalent to permanent account deletion. Use account deletion only when you want to leave the service and remove the account through Meta’s deletion process.
