To code a basic fishing mechanic in Roblox Studio, connect a ProximityPrompt to a client request, validate that request on the server, then let the server choose and award a fish. The client should handle input and show results; it should never decide which fish the player caught or how much it is worth.
This guide builds a prompt-based starter system with weighted fish, a randomized wait, a coin reward, and a catch notification. It also explains what to add for inventories, saving, selling, rods, and minigames. Roblox uses Luau, and fishing itself is not a built-in feature—you assemble it from ordinary Studio objects and scripts.
What you are building
The starter loop is:
- The player uses a prompt at a fishing spot.
- A
LocalScriptasks the server to start fishing there. - The server checks the spot, distance, cooldown, and player state.
- The server waits for a random bite interval, selects a fish from a weighted table, and awards its value.
- The server tells that player’s client what happened so it can update the interface.
This prompt-based version is a good first project because it works across keyboard, gamepad, and touch inputs. A rod with aiming, casting, a bobber, and reeling is more immersive, but adds input and replication complexity.

Create the objects in Explorer
In Studio, create this structure. The RemoteEvent objects belong in ReplicatedStorage so both client and server can access them.
ReplicatedStorage
└── Fishing (Folder)
├── StartFishing (RemoteEvent)
├── FishingResult (RemoteEvent)
└── FishConfig (ModuleScript)

└── FishingClient (LocalScript)

└── FishingSpots (Folder)
├── LakeSpot (Part)
│ └── ProximityPrompt
└── RiverSpot (Part)
└── ProximityPrompt
A Script runs server logic, a LocalScript handles player-side input and presentation, and a ModuleScript can hold reusable configuration. The client and server use remote events to communicate: the client calls FireServer(), the server receives the player through OnServerEvent, and the server can reply with FireClient().
Configure fish and relative odds
In FishConfig, define the fish available in each zone. Keep the names and values on the server: they are gameplay data, not trusted client input.
local FishConfig = {
Lake = {
{ Name = "Bluegill", Rarity = "Common", Weight = 60, Value = 5 },
{ Name = "Bass", Rarity = "Uncommon", Weight = 30, Value = 12 },
{ Name = "Golden Carp", Rarity = "Rare", Weight = 10, Value = 50 },
},
River = {
{ Name = "Trout", Rarity = "Common", Weight = 65, Value = 8 },
{ Name = "Salmon", Rarity = "Uncommon", Weight = 25, Value = 20 },
{ Name = "Rainbow Trout", Rarity = "Rare", Weight = 10, Value = 75 },
},
}
return FishConfig
Weight is relative, not inherently a percentage. In the Lake list, the total is 100, so the weights correspond to 60%, 30%, and 10%. If weights total 250, a fish with weight 50 has a 20% chance.
The server can choose proportionally with this function:

local function chooseFish(fishList)
local totalWeight = 0
for _, fish in ipairs(fishList) do
totalWeight += fish.Weight
end
local roll = math.random() * totalWeight
local runningTotal = 0
for _, fish in ipairs(fishList) do
runningTotal += fish.Weight
if roll <= runningTotal then
return fish
end
end
return fishList[#fishList]
end
Keep every weight positive and make sure each zone’s list is non-empty. The fallback only guards against a boundary case; it should not be used to compensate for malformed configuration.
Add fishing spots and prompts
- Create a part or interaction marker beside the water, name it clearly (for example,
LakeSpot), and put it underWorkspace.FishingSpots. - Insert a
ProximityPromptinto the part. - Set its
ActionTexttoFish,ObjectTexttoFishing Spot, and choose a reasonableHoldDurationandMaxActivationDistance. - For a spot-specific fish table and timing, add attributes to the part:
Zone(string),MinWait(number), andMaxWait(number). For example, set LakeSpot’sZonetoLake, withMinWait3 andMaxWait8.
These properties shape the experience, but they are not a security boundary. Roblox warns that prompt-related interactions can be manipulated on the client, so the server must still check the player’s actual position and fishing state. See the ProximityPrompt reference and client-server security guidance.

The server checks that the requested spot is a part in the designated folder, that the player is nearby, that they are not already fishing, and that requests are not arriving too quickly. It also validates and bounds the wait attributes. This is a starting example, not a guarantee of security for a valuable live economy: validate the fish configuration itself, keep inventory changes server-side, log rejected requests while developing, and ensure a failed operation cannot award twice.
The example does not cancel fishing if the player walks away or dies during the wait. A polished system should retain the chosen spot and player state, then recheck distance, character health, and any equipped rod before awarding. A cancellation token or per-player session record makes it possible to invalidate an in-progress catch cleanly.

Connect the prompt and show the result
Put this in StarterPlayerScripts.FishingClient. It asks the server to fish at a spot and prints a result as the simplest possible notification.
local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService("ReplicatedStorage")
local fishingFolder = ReplicatedStorage:WaitForChild("Fishing")
local startFishing = fishingFolder:WaitForChild("StartFishing")
local fishingResult = fishingFolder:WaitForChild("FishingResult")
local fishingSpots = workspace:WaitForChild("FishingSpots")
for _, spot in ipairs(fishingSpots:GetChildren()) do
local prompt = spot:FindFirstChildOfClass("ProximityPrompt")
if prompt then
prompt.Triggered:Connect(function()
startFishing:FireServer(spot.Name)
end)
end
end
fishingResult.OnClientEvent:Connect(function(fish)
print(("You caught a %s %s worth %d coins!")
:format(fish.Rarity, fish.Name, fish.Value))
end)
Replace print() with a ScreenGui for a better experience: show “Waiting for a bite,” the fish name and rarity, and any value or capacity information. The client can animate a bobber, play sounds, and present a minigame, but it must not award the fish or be treated as proof of a valid catch.
Test before adding progression
Use Studio’s test mode with multiple players and check more than the happy path:
- Fish normally at each configured zone and confirm the right fish list is used.
- Activate repeatedly and verify a second request cannot start while a catch is pending.
- Move far away during the wait; add the cancellation check before treating this as supported behavior.
- Try an invalid spot name and a spot whose zone has no fish table; the server should reject both without errors or rewards.
- Test player death or leaving during a wait and confirm per-player state is cleaned up.
- Run two players fishing at once; each should receive only their own result.
- Temporarily alter a weight table and catch repeatedly to sanity-check the distribution. Small samples vary, so do not expect exact percentages over a handful of casts.
Choose how to represent catches
For a prototype, leaderstats values such as Coins and FishCaught are easy to display. They are not a full inventory. Choose a representation based on what the game needs:
- Coins: a numeric balance, often shown on the leaderboard.
- FishCaught: a lifetime count, not the number of fish currently held.
- Inventory: fish names and quantities, plus any capacity limit.
- Collection: a set of fish types the player has discovered.
- Individual fish records: useful if a fish has its own size, quality, mutation, or serial number.
A live folder of values can make UI updates convenient, but creating a separate value object for every possible record becomes cumbersome. A structured table is more flexible for complex inventories; decide how to expose updates to the UI rather than letting the client become the source of truth.

Add selling without trusting the client
A common progression loop is catch fish → store fish → visit a vendor → sell fish → buy upgrades → catch rarer fish. Give the vendor a prompt, but have the server confirm the player is near it, read the server-owned inventory, calculate prices from server-side fish data, remove the fish, and add coins. Never accept a client-supplied sale amount, fish value, or list of fish to sell without checking it against the authoritative inventory.
Save progress with DataStoreService
Add persistence only after catching and inventory updates work reliably. Roblox’s DataStoreService documentation explains that data stores are for persistent data such as inventories and that access must come from server-side scripts. Calls can fail, so wrap them in pcall() and design for retries or recovery rather than assuming every save succeeds.
A saved record might look like:
{
Coins = 1250,
FishCaught = 42,
Inventory = { Bluegill = 8, Bass = 3 },
DiscoveredFish = { Bluegill = true, Bass = true },
RodLevel = 2,
}
For Studio testing, publish the experience, then open File → Experience Settings → Security and enable Enable Studio Access to API Services. Use an isolated test version or separate test data: Roblox warns that Studio access can interact with the same stores as a live experience.
Load a player’s record on join, save on PlayerRemoving, and also save periodically. Protect each data-store call with pcall(), track whether data actually loaded before saving, and avoid a stale in-flight save overwriting newer state. Roblox’s save-player-data tutorial covers the core join, periodic-save, and departure workflow. A failed load should not silently be treated as a valid empty record and then overwrite existing progress.
Expand to rods, bait, and minigames
Build complexity in layers instead of starting with a large fishing kit:

- Timed wait: the prompt MVP awards a server-selected fish after a delay.
- Bite reaction: the server announces a bite and gives the player a short window to respond; validate the response and timing on the server.
- Reeling minigame: a UI indicator and target zone create a skill test. Keep visuals responsive on the client, but avoid sending a remote every frame; send coarse input events or periodic, validated state instead.
- Rod and bait progression: add rod levels, bait modifiers, and zone-specific tables only after the base probabilities and reward loop are stable.
For rod-based fishing, a useful architecture is: equip a Tool, aim and cast locally, send a cast request, then let the server validate rod ownership, range, target zone, current fishing state, and request rate. A bobber can be created or authorized from server-controlled state; a bite timer and final award remain server-owned. A client raycast can help identify where the player aims, but it should not authorize an arbitrary fish or unrestricted spawn position.
Keep the reward system server-authoritative
A remote is a request channel, not proof that the player did something legitimate. Treat every client-supplied value as potentially manipulated. A secure direction is “start fishing at this spot,” followed by server checks—not “I caught this fish worth this many coins.” Check actual character position, spot membership, equipped items where relevant, active state, and cooldown on the server. The Roblox client-server boundary guidance discusses validating client inputs and interactions.
Use rate limits and state checks rather than relying on platform limits. Roblox documents an approximate limit of 500 client-fired remote requests per second per client, shared among remote events of the same type; that is a ceiling, not a sensible target for a fishing loop. A prompt activation plus occasional result message needs no high-frequency remote traffic. See the RemoteEvent reference.

Monetization is not required to build this mechanic. If you later add it, Roblox distinguishes one-time passes for permanent privileges from repeatable developer products such as consumables or temporary boosts. Developer-product receipts must be handled with ProcessReceipt; do not grant a purchase merely because a client says it paid. Avoid making ordinary fishing frustrating without a paid boost, and consider cosmetics or convenience rather than paid random rewards.
Roblox supports regional or managed pricing, so do not hard-code a displayed Robux price; retrieve current product information as described in its regional-pricing documentation. If you use Creator Store models or scripts, inspect their code, remotes, permissions, data-store behavior, and any external requests before importing them. An art asset is not a reason to trust an unfamiliar gameplay script.
Common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| The prompt appears, but no catch arrives. | A name or location mismatch, invalid zone, or server validation rejection. | Check the RemoteEvent names, script types and locations, spot folder, zone attribute, and server output. Confirm the player is within the server’s distance limit. |
| The client says a fish was caught, but no reward appears. | The UI is being treated as the reward authority, or the server cannot find the coin value. | Move award logic into the server and verify the server-side inventory or leaderstats.Coins object exists. |
| Players can fish from anywhere. | The server trusts a client location or does not validate the actual character position. | Compare the player’s server-observed root position with the actual spot part. |
| Players can spam requests. | No cooldown or active session guard, or the state is not cleaned up. | Use a per-player cooldown and active-fishing state; clear both on departure and on all success or cancellation paths. |
| Odds seem wrong. | Weights do not total what you assumed, the wrong zone table is used, or configuration contains invalid values. | Check the sum of weights and compute each chance as its weight divided by the total. Test over many attempts, not a tiny sample. |
| Progress disappears after testing. | Studio API access is disabled, data calls failed, the wrong experience is being used, or test and live data were mixed. | Check the published experience and API Services setting, inspect protected-call errors, and isolate test data from production. |
What to build next
Once the basic loop works, a useful order is: server-owned fish inventory, vendor selling, capacity, collection book, rod upgrades, zone-specific species, bite timing, and finally a more elaborate reeling minigame. For reference, use the official documentation for Luau scripting, remote events, data stores, and server validation.
