For a semantic tab, locate it by its ARIA role and accessible name, then call .click(): await page.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' }).click(); If the interface exposes the control as a button instead, use getByRole('button', { name: 'Settings' }). Match the role the page actually exposes, and assert that the expected panel or selected state appears after the click.
Click a tab by its role and accessible name
Playwright’s getByRole() locator matches an element’s ARIA role and accessible name. For a tab named “Settings,” the basic action is:
await page.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' }).click();
The role identifies the kind of control; the accessible name identifies which one. Include the name whenever possible. Calling getByRole('tab') without a name may match several tabs, leaving the test unclear about which one it intends to click.
A visual label is not necessarily the accessible name. Use the name exposed to accessibility tools, which may come from visible text or another accessible naming method. If the locator does not find the element, inspect the page’s accessibility information and DOM rather than guessing from the control’s appearance.

Choose tab or button based on the page
A conventional tabs widget exposes each selectable tab as role="tab", commonly inside a role="tablist", with its content in a role="tabpanel". In that case, use the tab role:
await page.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' }).click();
Some interfaces look like tabs but expose each control as a native button or an ARIA button. Match that role instead:
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Settings' }).click();
Do not choose a locator from styling alone. A button-shaped element is not automatically a button in the accessibility tree, and a row of tab-shaped controls is not automatically a semantic tabs widget. The exposed role is the deciding evidence.

When inspecting a widget, check that the intended name is present and that it identifies only the intended control. If two controls share the name “Settings,” improve the locator by scoping it to the relevant tab list or region, or correct the application’s accessible names if they are ambiguous. A role-and-name locator expresses the user-facing intent more directly than a CSS class or a positional selector, and is less tied to layout implementation.
Write a test that clicks and verifies the switch
A successful click is not, by itself, proof that the intended tab became active. Assert an observable result that represents the application’s state. If the selected panel has the accessible name “Settings,” a test can check that panel’s visibility:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('opens the Settings tab', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/account');
await page.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' }).click();
await expect(
page.getByRole('tabpanel', { name: 'Settings' })
).toBeVisible();
});
This example assumes the application is available at the stated local route and exposes a panel with that accessible name. Change the route and expected name to match the application under test; do not assume every panel is named after its tab.

If the application exposes selection as aria-selected="true", you can assert that state as well, using a stable locator for the tab. For example:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
const settingsTab = page.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' });
await settingsTab.click();
await expect(settingsTab).toHaveAttribute('aria-selected', 'true');
Use the assertion that corresponds to the application’s real semantics. A visible panel checks the displayed content; a selected attribute checks the tab’s exposed selection state. If the interface does not expose either clearly, choose another stable, user-observable change that only occurs when the intended tab is active.
Use a frame locator when the tab is inside an iframe
A locator created from the main page does not automatically search inside an iframe. Scope the query through frameLocator(), using a selector that identifies the relevant iframe:

- High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
- 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control
- Plug-and-go ready for instant use
await page
.frameLocator('iframe')
.getByRole('tab', { name: 'Settings' })
.click();
The frame locator supports getByRole() with the same role-and-accessible-name approach. If the page contains multiple iframes, use a selector that identifies the correct one rather than relying on a broad iframe match. Verify the post-click state inside that same frame when the panel also lives there.
Resolve locator failures without weakening the test
- No matching tab: The page may expose the control as a button, the accessible name may differ from its visible label, or the control may live in a frame. Inspect the accessibility tree or DOM, then use the actual role, name, and frame scope.
- More than one match: Add the accessible name if absent, or scope the locator to the relevant tab list or region. Do not select the first match merely to silence an ambiguity; that can make the test click the wrong control.
- The click runs but content does not change: Check whether the action targeted the actual interactive control and whether the test is asserting the correct panel or selected state. A click assertion alone does not establish that the tab switched.
- Panel assertion fails: Confirm that the panel has the accessible name used in the test and that the expected state is visibility, not a different application-specific signal. Match the assertion to the real widget.
- The control is in an iframe: Use
page.frameLocator(...)before locating the tab or button. A page-level locator cannot stand in for an explicitly scoped frame locator. - The only workable selector is structural: Prefer an accessible role and name where available. If the page has no usable semantics or accessible name, use a stable test ID or another selector intentionally maintained by the application, then verify the resulting panel state.
Keep tab tests resilient and meaningful
Role plus accessible name describes a control in terms users and assistive technology can perceive. It is generally more resilient to layout changes than a selector based on CSS classes or DOM position. A selector such as “the third item in this row” can silently point to another control when the interface changes order; a named role makes the test’s intent more legible.
Locator quality depends on the application too. A role is useful only when the page exposes the right semantics, and a name is useful only when it is stable and unique in the scope being queried. If a custom widget has no accessible role or name, a stable test ID is preferable to an incidental class name or a long chain of DOM relationships. Where possible, improving the application’s semantics makes both automated tests and assistive use clearer.

Separate the interaction from the proof of outcome: locate the intended control, click it, and assert the resulting active panel or selected state. That structure helps distinguish a locator problem from a behavior problem when a test fails.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does clicking a tab with Playwright also test keyboard navigation?
No. A locator click tests pointer activation. Keyboard behavior needs its own interaction and assertions.
Can I use a text locator instead of a role locator?
You can, but role plus accessible name more directly identifies the control’s semantics when the page exposes them.
