To clear the Discord desktop cache on Windows, quit Discord completely, press Windows + R, enter %AppData%Discord, and delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders if they are present. Reopen Discord afterward so it can rebuild them.
Close the app before deleting anything. This targeted cleanup removes local temporary files; it does not uninstall Discord or delete your servers and messages from your account.
What clearing Discord’s cache can fix
Discord stores downloaded interface resources, images and other temporary client data in its Windows application folders. When those files become stale or corrupted, removing them can help with:

- Missing images, icons, styling or other interface elements
- A client stuck on “Starting” or loading indefinitely
- Crashes or unusual behavior after an update
- Some display, video or screen-sharing glitches

Cache deletion will not repair a Discord outage, an account ban or verification issue, a broken internet connection, DNS or routing problem, microphone permissions, defective hardware, or every graphics-driver problem. Those require a different diagnosis.
Clear the Discord desktop cache on Windows
- Quit Discord from the notification area. Right-click the Discord icon near the clock and choose Quit Discord, if that option is shown.
- Check for remaining processes. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, select every Discord process that remains and choose End task.
- Open Discord’s Roaming folder. Press Windows + R, type
%AppData%Discord, and press Enter. This Run-dialog method works even when AppData is hidden in File Explorer. - Delete only the cache folders. Select
Cache,Code CacheandGPUCache, then press Delete. A particular installation may not contain all three; remove whichever are present. - Start Discord again. Launch the desktop app normally. Discord should recreate the required folders as it loads, and the first launch can take a little longer while resources are downloaded again.
Empty the Recycle Bin only if you want the deleted space reclaimed immediately. Cache size differs by client version, media use and installation age, so there is no dependable amount of space to expect.
If Discord will not close or Windows says a file is in use
A system-tray icon or updater process can keep a cache file locked. Recheck the notification area, open Task Manager, and end every Discord process before trying the deletion again. Discord’s Windows corrupt-installation instructions likewise require all Discord instances to be terminated before application files are removed.
If the lock persists, restart Windows and repeat the steps before opening Discord. Do not work around the lock by deleting the entire application folder while the client is still running; that can leave a partial cleanup and create additional installation problems.
Where the folder is when AppData is hidden
The quickest route is Windows + R followed by %AppData%Discord. If you browse manually, the equivalent path is:
C:UsersYourWindowsUsernameAppDataRoamingDiscord
Replace YourWindowsUsername with your actual Windows account name; do not type the angle brackets. Discord’s official repair procedure also uses the separate local-data path %LocalAppData%Discord, but that folder is for the broader reset described below.

What cache deletion changes—and what it does not

The three-folder method targets temporary files rather than account content. Servers, messages and friends are associated with your Discord account, not with these cache folders. Broader deletion can remove local settings, logs and session information, however, so avoid promising that a user will never be logged out.

Desktop app versus Discord in a browser
The instructions above apply to the installed Windows desktop client. Discord opened in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or another browser uses that browser’s own cache and site data; deleting %AppData%Discord will not clear it.
If Discord works at discord.com but not in the desktop app, the fault is more likely local to the desktop client. If both fail, investigate service status, network, account or system-level causes before repeatedly deleting files. If only one browser has the problem, clear that browser’s Discord site data instead.
Cache cleanup, refresh and full reset are different
Inside the desktop client, Ctrl + R refreshes the interface. It is a quick first step when the app is open and merely looks stale, but it is not the same as deleting Windows cache folders. Discord documents this refresh in its voice and video troubleshooting guide.

When a full Discord reset is appropriate
Do not delete the whole Discord folder as your first cache-clearing step. For a corrupt installation or update that will not recover, Discord’s official procedure is to:

- Close Discord and end all remaining processes.
- Delete
%AppData%Discord. - Delete
%LocalAppData%Discord. - Restart Windows.
- Download and reinstall Discord from Discord’s official download page.
This is a full local reset, not a cache cleanup. It can remove settings and session information, and it may log you out. Discord’s current Windows installer and corrupt-installation guidance is at this support article; its installer-error guidance also references both AppData locations.
For a reversible intermediate step, close Discord and rename the Roaming folder to something such as Discord.old. Launching Discord creates a new folder while preserving the old one for recovery. This still rebuilds substantial local data, so a sign-in may be needed.
If clearing the cache does not fix Discord
- Reopen Discord, let any update finish, and try Ctrl + R.
- Restart Discord and then restart Windows.
- Check Discord’s service-status page for an outage.
- Test the web client. A browser result can help distinguish a desktop-client issue from a wider account or network problem.
- For rendering, video or screen-sharing symptoms, try User Settings → Voice & Video → Video → Advanced → Hardware Acceleration and disable hardware acceleration. Labels can change between client versions.
- Update Windows, your graphics driver and Discord. Discord’s current desktop baseline is Windows 10 or newer, according to its system-requirements page updated July 21, 2026.
- Use the full reset and reinstall procedure if files remain corrupt or updates repeatedly fail.
- Contact Discord Support with screenshots, exact error text, Windows version, whether the browser client works, and repeatable steps.
VPNs, proxies, firewalls, antivirus tools, permissions and GPU drivers can all produce symptoms that cache deletion cannot resolve. Testing clients such as PTB and Canary also have separate stability considerations; they are not a general-purpose fix. Advanced users can perform the same targeted cleanup from Command Prompt. This permanently deletes the specified folders without using the Recycle Bin, so first close Discord and verify the paths.
taskkill /F /IM Discord.exe
rmdir /S /Q "%AppData%DiscordCache"
rmdir /S /Q "%AppData%DiscordCode Cache"
rmdir /S /Q "%AppData%DiscordGPUCache"
A “path not found” message simply means that folder is not present. Never substitute %AppData%Discord or %LocalAppData%Discord for the individual cache paths unless you intend to perform the full reset.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Discord’s Windows cache?
For the desktop app, open %AppData%Discord. Discord identifies the cache location as %appdata%/discord/Cache in its troubleshooting guide.
Can I clear it without uninstalling Discord?
Yes. Closing Discord and deleting only the cache folders is a targeted cleanup; uninstalling is unnecessary.
Will clearing the cache delete my messages?
It targets local temporary files. Your account’s servers, messages and friends are not stored in those cache folders, although a broader reset can remove local preferences and session data.
Why did the folders come back?
That is expected. Discord recreates cache folders as it downloads and stores resources during startup and normal use.
Is Ctrl + R the same as clearing the cache?
No. Ctrl + R refreshes the running client; it does not delete the Windows folders.

Only when following the full corrupt-installation reset. It is unnecessary for the normal three-folder cache cleanup.
Does clearing cache always fix lag?
No. It can help with stale local resources, but lag caused by an outage, network path, hardware, drivers or system load needs separate troubleshooting.
