Start with the least invasive work: identify the keyboard, test every key, then clean the keycaps and case. A working Model M with consistent key feel usually does not need its internal assembly opened or its plastic rivets replaced. Reserve a bolt mod for broken rivets, a loose or separating frame, or repairs that require internal access.
A Model M combines ordinary washable plastic parts with a delicate assembly of springs, pivot plates, membranes, and a steel backplate. Treating the whole keyboard as one object to scrub or soak can turn a straightforward cleanup into a difficult repair. This guide moves from safe exterior cleaning to diagnosis and, only if needed, structural renovation.
Identify the keyboard and record its condition
Before removing a screw or keycap, photograph the keyboard from all sides, its layout, cable routing, and rear label. Record the part number, brand (IBM, Lexmark, or Unicomp), date code if present, layout, and variant: standard full-size, SSK, M13, M122, industrial, terminal, or another specialty board. Note whether it has a fixed SDL cable, a detachable cable, PS/2, or a USB conversion, and whether the LED wiring appears separate or integrated.
“Model M” covers multiple generations and layouts. Cable arrangements, screw counts, membranes, LED connections, and replacement-part compatibility can differ. Use the rear-label part number when sourcing parts; Unicomp, for example, notes that older keyboards with a separate LED flex circuit can require modification to use a current membrane assembly. Check Unicomp’s membrane compatibility information before ordering.

Save the original key arrangement in a photo. Make a list of nonworking, sticky, weak, unusually loose, or non-clicking keys, and note LED behavior. Put screws and unusual stabilizer pieces in labeled containers. This baseline helps distinguish an existing fault from a problem introduced during reassembly.
Test before opening the case
Connect the keyboard through a known-compatible adapter or converter and test every key in a keyboard tester or text editor. Test the cable and adapter separately if possible. On PS/2 boards, an unreliable PS/2-to-USB adapter can mimic a keyboard fault; a dead board should not be diagnosed until the adapter, connection, and computer have been ruled out. Community troubleshooting guidance discusses this adapter issue at Geekhack.
Pay attention to patterns. One dead key is different from a group of adjacent dead keys or a whole keyboard that does not respond. Record whether a key registers but feels wrong, or fails electrically despite feeling normal.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- One or two keys fail: inspect the keycap, spring, and local mechanism before considering major disassembly.
- Several nearby or widespread keys fail: suspect a membrane, layer alignment, cable, controller, or frame problem; investigate before buying parts.
- The plate and frame shift or separate, or many keys feel loose: inspect for broken rivets and consider a partial or full screw mod.
Tools and supplies
For cleaning, gather a keycap puller or careful fingers, a 5.5 mm (7/32-inch) nut driver for the common case screws, small containers, soft towels, soft nylon brushes or toothbrushes, microfiber cloths, mild dish detergent, warm water, and cotton swabs. A phone or camera and a keyboard tester are useful. Compressed air can help with loose debris, but use short bursts and direct debris out of the assembly rather than deeper into it.
Do not buy bolt-mod hardware until diagnosis shows you need it. An internal repair may require a drill with a small bit, a chisel or sharp blade, clamps, a suitable nut driver, and machine screws, nuts, and sometimes washers. Hardware count and size vary by model and repair method; one detailed guide lists 87 M2 sets for a particular full assembly, not a universal specification. See the detailed Geekhack nut-and-bolt guide and Mod My Model M’s guide before attempting the work.
Remove and clean the keycaps
- Photograph the layout and note the position of stabilized keys.
- Pull each keycap straight up with controlled force. Do not twist aggressively.
- Keep track of stabilizer wires or inserts on the space bar, shifts, Enter, Backspace, and larger numpad keys.
- Place the caps in warm—not boiling—water with a small amount of mild dish detergent. Agitate gently and use a soft toothbrush for stubborn dirt.
- Rinse thoroughly and air-dry on a towel. Allow at least 24 hours, and longer if water remains in a hollow cap, before reinstalling.
Some Model M generations use one-piece caps while others have separate stems, so what you see after lifting a cap may differ. Handle the spring and stem carefully. Warm soapy water and gentle brushing are common hobbyist practice, not a manufacturer-approved specification; a community cleaning discussion is available at Deskthority.

Avoid bleach, acetone, strong degreasers, abrasive pads on legends, and high heat. Do not scrub dye-sublimated or pad-printed legends hard. Yellowing is generally aging of the plastic, not dirt; cleaning can remove grime but may not restore the original color. Peroxide “retrobright” treatments can produce uneven or temporary results, and there is no universal safe recipe supported here. Leaving the color as-is is the lower-risk option.
Open and wash the case
- Disconnect the keyboard from power.
- Turn it over and remove the rear case screws with a 5.5 mm or 7/32-inch driver. Four are typical on many full-size boards, but variants differ.
- Separate the top and bottom shells carefully. Keep the internal plate and electronics supported; do not pull on the cable.
- Wash the plastic shells by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft brush. Keep water away from the internal assembly and electronics.
- Rinse and let the shells dry completely before closing the case.
Hand-clean the bottom shell around the rear label rather than soaking or scrubbing it if the label matters to you. The original label, badge, cable, and case may have value to a collector even when a utilitarian restoration would prioritize function. Inspect screw posts for cracks, tabs for damage, and feet, elevator feet, badge, cable strain relief, and seams for wear. Tighten case screws only until secure; excessive force can split aged plastic posts. A visual teardown is available at iFixit.
A dishwasher is not a safe default. Reports of hobbyists washing plastic parts that way do not establish a universal method; heat, detergent, labels, warping, and trapped moisture create avoidable risks. Hand washing gives better control.
Clean the exposed mechanism without opening it
If the board works and the frame feels solid, leave the inner assembly together. Use a soft brush to lift loose debris. If using compressed air, use short bursts and hold the keyboard so dust exits rather than settling farther inside. Use cotton swabs sparingly in accessible areas. Do not spray cleaner into the key mechanisms or flood the plate, membrane, controller, cable connectors, or LED circuit.
The inner mechanism is a layered assembly, not a modern hot-swappable keyboard. Its plastic barrel frame, springs and pivot plates, membranes, and steel backplate need to remain aligned. Ordinary exterior cleaning does not require removing rivets; opening the layers generally turns the job into structural work. The Geekhack Model M guide describes the riveted frame construction.

Diagnose faults before choosing a repair
One key does not register
Remove the keycap and inspect for debris, a damaged or displaced spring, a missing or damaged pivot plate, or a broken hammer. Compare the key’s feel with a neighboring key. If you have compatible replacement parts, a known-good spring or pivot assembly can help isolate a local mechanical fault. A single dead key does not prove that the rivets are failing, and it is not a reason by itself to drill the keyboard.
Several nearby keys fail
A cluster of dead keys raises suspicion of membrane damage, a shifted layer, a cracked frame, or separation in the assembly. Liquid damage can also affect multiple keys. Check the cable and controller as part of diagnosis rather than assuming the membrane is at fault. Membrane replacement is a deeper repair and may require removing the original rivets; verify the part number and generation first.
Keys feel loose, weak, or inconsistent
Broken rivets can reduce the clamping force between the barrel frame and steel backplate, leading to a loose feel or inconsistent operation. A cracked frame, damaged spring or pivot plate, or misaligned layers can produce similar symptoms. Look for visible separation or frame movement before deciding on a mod. The Model M modification guide explains common rivet-related symptoms.
No keys work or the keyboard has no power
Check, in order: the adapter or converter, cable connection and cable condition, controller, membrane flex-cable seating if accessible, and signs of corrosion or liquid damage. A cable, controller, or adapter fault can make a mechanically sound keyboard appear dead. Disconnect power before opening the case, and do not tug on old flex cables or ground straps.

Does it need a bolt mod?
A bolt mod, screw mod, or nut-and-bolt mod replaces melted plastic rivet heads with machine screws and nuts (often with washers) to clamp the barrel frame and backplate together again. It is a structural repair, not routine cleaning or an automatic upgrade for every old Model M.

Leave the rivets intact if every key works, key feel is reasonably even, the assembly does not shift or separate, and there is no internal contamination requiring access. Unnecessary drilling introduces risk and can damage a good board. Community restoration advice likewise favors leaving a functioning board unmodified unless repair needs justify it: see Deskthority and Geekhack.
Consider a partial mod when a small number of broken rivets is confirmed and the rest of the assembly is sound. It limits drilling but requires keeping the frame snug against the backplate and preventing debris from reaching the membranes. If the layers shift, a limited repair can become a full disassembly.
Consider a full mod when many rivets have failed, the membrane or frame needs replacement, or widespread internal cleaning or component repair requires separating the assembly. This is advanced work. If you have not done one before, study a detailed photo guide first and consider a specialist rather than learning on a rare or sentimental board.

Exact procedures vary by board. In broad terms, the work involves removing the case and carefully disconnecting the relevant LED, ground, cable, and membrane connections; supporting the inner assembly; removing rivet heads; separating the layers only when prepared to control springs and hammers; removing membranes before drilling; drilling at former rivet points; clearing every shaving; and reassembling and clamping the layers evenly. Test the keyboard before reinstalling the case.
Do not treat this summary as a substitute for a model-specific guide. The Geekhack bolt-mod instructions note generation-specific LED connectors and differences in SSKs and non-LED boards. Keep the assembly supported and flat. Some maintenance guidance recommends keeping keycaps installed when supporting the inner assembly; a keycap-less assembly placed on a hard surface can crush springs. See the handling cautions on Geekhack.

Major failure modes include losing springs or hammers as the frame separates, drilling plastic into a membrane, misaligning membrane layers, drilling off-center, cracking brittle plastic, reversing or damaging flex cables, harming the cable or ground strap, overtightening screws, and creating dead keys during reassembly. Tighten incrementally and evenly—enough to clamp the frame, not enough to crush it. Hardware counts are not universal: the number depends on the keyboard and whether the repair is partial or full.
Cracked frames and replacement parts
A cracked barrel frame is a structural problem; glue alone should not be treated as a dependable restoration because correct alignment and clamping are essential to the mechanism. Options include a sound donor frame or internal assembly, a compatible replacement frame, or retiring the board if the repair is impractical. Replacing a frame normally requires removing the original rivets and fitting a screw or bolt mod. See the cracked-frame repair guide.
For a failed spring, pivot plate, keycap, stabilizer, membrane, cable, or controller, match the part to the keyboard’s part number and generation. Unicomp’s membrane listing asks buyers for keyboard identification and warns that older LED wiring can require modification. Do not assume all Model M membranes or internal parts interchange. Prices and availability change; check the seller’s current listing rather than relying on an old price.
Reassemble and test
- Make sure every washed part is completely dry.
- If the inner assembly was opened, confirm that springs, hammers, pivot plates, and membrane layers are correctly placed and aligned.
- Reconnect flex cables gently, along with any ground strap, LED wiring, controller, and keyboard cable that were removed. Never force a connector.
- Before closing the case, connect the keyboard and test every key and LED. Fix any faults while the assembly remains accessible.
- Close the case, reinstall screws without overtightening, replace feet if needed, and fit keycaps to match your photographs. Check stabilizers for correct engagement.
- Run a second full key test after final assembly.
A successful result is a keyboard with every key registering, consistent buckling-spring feel, working stabilizers and LEDs, no case flex or rattling, and a secure cable. If a key fails after reassembly, first check whether its cap is seated and its spring centered, whether nearby keys work, whether flex cables are fully inserted, and whether the assembly is clamped too tightly. Do not immediately repeat a full teardown.
DIY, specialist repair, or replacement?
Exterior cleaning is a sensible beginner project. Opening the riveted assembly, replacing a membrane, or repairing a cracked frame demands more care, tools, and model-specific knowledge. A specialist repair or donor assembly is worth considering if the board is rare, historically important, sentimental, or beyond your comfort level.
Compare the cost and effort with the keyboard’s value to you, not only its resale price. A restoration can make sense for historical preservation or the feel of a particular board even when replacement is cheaper. Conversely, if the frame, membrane, cable, and controller all need work and originality is not important, a current buckling-spring keyboard may be more practical. Unicomp’s New Model M is a functional alternative using the same broad buckling-spring concept, but it does not preserve the original IBM case, badge, cable, date code, or keycaps. Specialist parts and repair services are available from vendors such as ClickyKeyboards and Unicomp; confirm current stock, service scope, compatibility, and pricing directly.
