The safest streak-free method is simple: turn off and unplug the monitor, remove dust with a clean dry microfiber cloth, use a barely damp cloth with distilled water for fingerprints, then immediately dry the screen with a second clean microfiber cloth. Never spray liquid directly onto the display.
What you need
- Two clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloths
- Distilled water
- An optional display cleaner explicitly approved for your monitor
Use a smooth optical or electronics microfiber cloth, not one with rough seams, embroidery, grit, dust, or hard tags. A cloth washed with fabric softener—or previously used with household cleaner—can leave residue and streaks. Microfiber is not automatically safe if it contains dirt or particles.
Two cloths make a noticeable difference: one lifts oil and dirt, while the other removes moisture before it dries into a film.
How to clean a monitor without streaks
- Turn off and unplug the monitor. A dark screen makes dust and smudges easier to see. Unplugging also reduces electrical risk if moisture reaches an edge, port, control, or vent. Let a warm display cool completely. See Dell’s monitor-cleaning guidance and LG’s instructions.
- Inspect the mark before cleaning. Decide whether it is loose dust, a fingerprint, dried water, food residue, a cloudy film, a scratch, or a pressure mark. A persistent mark is not necessarily dirt.
- Remove loose dust while the screen is dry. Gently sweep the panel with a dry microfiber cloth. Do not press hard or rub visible grit across the surface; wetting dust can turn it into an abrasive paste.
- Dampen the cloth, not the monitor. Put a small amount of distilled water on the cloth. It should be barely damp, never wet or dripping. All four major manufacturer guides emphasize applying liquid to the cloth rather than spraying the display: Dell, LG, Samsung, and HP.
- Wipe gently in consistent strokes. Work in small sections, moving top-to-bottom or left-to-right. Use light pressure and refold the cloth when its section becomes dirty or oily. Random repeated passes can redistribute grease rather than remove it.
- Dry the panel immediately. Use the second dry microfiber cloth in light, overlapping passes while the surface is still slightly damp. If a streak appears, change to a clean section instead of adding more liquid.
- Check under angled light. Look at the display against a lamp or window reflection. If necessary, repeat once with a clean, barely damp cloth and then dry it again. Do not keep escalating to stronger chemicals simply because the first pass failed.
Cleaning different marks
Dust
Use a dry microfiber cloth. Liquid is unnecessary and can make loose particles more difficult to remove safely.

Fingerprints and skin oil
Start with distilled water on a barely damp cloth. Several gentle passes are safer than pressing hard. Finish with a dry cloth. If water does not improve the mark, stop and check the monitor’s manual before using alcohol or another cleaner.
Dried water spots
Use a small amount of distilled water and dry it immediately. Tap water may leave mineral residue if it evaporates on the panel.

Food, drink, or unknown residue
Do not scrape the surface. Soften the residue gradually with a barely damp cloth and lift it away. Keep liquid away from the panel’s lower edge, vents, buttons, and ports.

These may indicate cleaner residue, oil spread across the surface, anti-glare or anti-reflective coating damage, moisture behind the panel, or permanent discoloration. Dell warns that inappropriate cleaning can cause color fading, a milky film, deformation, uneven dark shading, or surface peeling. Stop rubbing aggressively and contact the manufacturer or service provider if the condition persists.

Scratches and pressure marks
Cleaning cannot remove scratches, pressure marks, burn-in, image retention, or damaged panel layers. Further rubbing may worsen coating damage. Document the condition and contact the manufacturer if the monitor is under warranty.
Why cleaning leaves more streaks or smudges
- Too much liquid: Excess moisture dries unevenly and may migrate into the panel.
- A dirty cloth: The cloth may contain oil, detergent, fabric softener, dust, grit, or old cleaning product.
- One cloth used for everything: A damp cloth can become saturated and redistribute grime instead of absorbing it.
- The display was warm: Heat speeds uneven evaporation.
- Tap water dried on the screen: Minerals can remain as spots or haze.
- Excessive pressure: Hard rubbing can damage delicate coatings.
- The bezel was cleaned first: Dirt or residue from the frame can transfer back to the panel.
If the screen looks worse after cleaning, stop adding product. Turn it off, use a fresh dry microfiber cloth, make gentle straight passes, and only then try a barely damp distilled-water pass followed by immediate drying.

What not to use on a monitor
- Direct spray: Liquid can run toward the lower edge, electronics, controls, or ports. Apple, Dell, and LG all warn against spraying directly onto displays.
- Windex and household glass cleaner: Ammonia, solvents, alcohol, and other ingredients may damage display coatings. Samsung, Dell, LG, HP, and Apple caution against household or window cleaners.
- Paper towels, tissues, and rough fabric: They can shed lint or carry particles that abrade the surface. HP specifically lists paper towels, tissues, and old T-shirts among materials to avoid.
- Abrasive products: Avoid powders, scouring cleaners, polishing compounds, and magic-eraser-type products.
- Bleach, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer: Their chemicals and solvents may be unsuitable for screen coatings.
- Compressed air on the panel: Manufacturer advice conflicts—HP discusses it for some dust-removal situations, while Dell lists it among methods to avoid. Do not use compressed air on the display surface; follow the manual for vents or other components.
Are alcohol and vinegar safe?
There is no universal rule for every display. Dell, LG, and Samsung advise avoiding alcohol on their monitor products, while Apple permits a cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol for certain hard-to-remove smudges on some Mac displays. Apple still prohibits direct spraying, window cleaners, household cleaners, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners. Do not generalize Apple’s exception to every LCD, LED, OLED, matte, glossy, or gaming monitor. Use distilled water first. Only use alcohol, vinegar, or a commercial solution if the exact monitor manual specifically permits it. HP mentions a diluted distilled-water-and-white-vinegar mixture for tougher cleaning, but other manufacturers prohibit chemicals, so vinegar is not the safest default.

OLED, matte, glossy, gaming, and touchscreen displays
LCD, IPS, VA, and LED monitors generally follow the same low-moisture baseline. “LED monitor” usually describes the backlight rather than a different front surface. The coating is what matters.
Treat OLED and QD-OLED displays as coating-sensitive and check the exact model manual. Matte and anti-glare panels can change appearance after aggressive rubbing or unsuitable chemicals. Glossy screens reveal fingerprints and streaks more clearly, making the immediate dry-cloth pass especially important. Touchscreens collect oil faster but still require minimal moisture and model-specific instructions.
What to do if liquid or cleaner was sprayed directly
- Turn off and unplug the monitor.
- Do not press hard or attempt to polish the surface.
- Blot visible liquid near the edges with a dry, soft cloth.
- Let the display dry fully.
- Contact the manufacturer if liquid reached an edge, port, vent, or control, or if discoloration, a cloudy film, or peeling appears.
How often should you clean a monitor?
Clean it when dust or visible fingerprints appear rather than following a rigid universal schedule. A light dry-cloth pass is usually preferable to frequent wet cleaning. Touchscreens, shared workspaces, and dusty rooms may need more frequent attention. HP gives a general suggestion of every one to two weeks, but it is maintenance guidance—not a requirement for every monitor.

Are commercial screen cleaners worth buying?
For ordinary dust and fingerprints, a clean microfiber cloth and distilled water are the lowest-cost, lowest-risk baseline. A display-specific kit is mainly a convenience purchase, and its compatibility claims do not replace the monitor’s manual.

Choose a commercial product only when it clearly identifies display compatibility, provides ingredient and usage information, and does not conflict with the monitor manual. Never buy one that instructs you to spray directly onto the panel.
