Choose dimensions from the available header space and the logo’s aspect ratio, then check that the brand remains legible at the smallest responsive layout. For a logo that scales cleanly across screens, use SVG when your platform supports it; otherwise export a raster image large enough for the highest display density you need.
Start with the header, not a preset pixel size
A logo’s right size depends on how it is used: a wide wordmark needs more horizontal space than a symbol, and a header with large navigation controls leaves less room than a simple one. Treat published dimensions as platform-specific examples, not universal rules. The design system or content-management platform you use may impose its own upload requirements.
Before exporting a logo, place the header’s padding, navigation, account controls, and other elements. Measure the remaining usable area. Then choose the largest logo height that fits comfortably without crowding the controls or making the header disproportionately tall. The logo should retain its original proportions.
- Check height: leave breathing room above and below the logo rather than filling the entire header.
- Check width: ensure the wordmark does not collide with navigation or wrap the header at narrower widths.
- Check legibility: inspect the actual rendered logo, especially any text inside it. California Web Standards advises that header-logo text must remain legible.
- Check every breakpoint: a logo that fits a desktop header may not fit beside mobile navigation controls.
Why published logo dimensions differ
Public-sector design systems and software platforms give different dimensions because they address different layouts and use cases. These figures are useful starting points when working within the named system; they are not interchangeable sizing standards.

Do not copy a reference dimension without checking its context. For example, a 64 × 64 px SharePoint thumbnail is square, while a wordmark is usually wide. The thumbnail dimension does not mean a horizontal header logo should be squeezed into a square. SharePoint’s support guidance accepts PNG, JPEG, and SVG subject to platform restrictions.
Choose a file format that matches the logo
SVG for a scalable vector logo
Prefer SVG when you have a genuine vector logo and your platform accepts it. Vector artwork scales without the blur or pixelation associated with enlarging a small raster image. The NCI Design System says its logo should be SVG, and the UAE Design System also recommends SVG. GOV.UK Publishing Guidance notes that SVG files have no minimum image size.
SVG support can be restricted by a platform or upload workflow, so confirm that the place where you will use the logo accepts it. SVG also does not fix a logo that is too small in the layout: text in a wordmark can remain unreadable even when its edges are perfectly sharp.
PNG or JPEG when a raster file is required
If SVG is unavailable or disallowed, export a raster fallback at the largest display density the design needs. Render it at the intended CSS size and inspect it on the screens you support. A small raster enlarged to fill a header can look soft; a very large file may add unnecessary download weight. Use transparent PNG when the logo needs to sit on a variable background and transparency is required. Follow your platform’s accepted formats and restrictions.

The file’s pixel dimensions and its displayed CSS dimensions are related but not identical. A raster image can contain more pixels than the space it occupies in the header, which helps maintain sharpness on high-density screens. Regardless of format, keep the aspect ratio intact: set width and height proportionally or use layout rules that allow the browser to preserve it.

Decide whether desktop and mobile need different variants
First test the full logo at every responsive breakpoint. If the wordmark still fits and remains readable, one asset can be sufficient. If it competes with navigation or becomes too small on mobile, make a compact lockup or symbol-only variant rather than shrinking the full logo until its text is illegible.
California Web Standards says header-logo text must remain legible and notes that a web-optimized logo may be needed. Separating visual elements from text can help when a complete wordmark no longer fits. Keep the brand recognizable and ensure any site name needed for identification remains available as text or an appropriate accessible name.
Responsive variants can have different source dimensions and shapes, but each must preserve its own proportions. NCI’s distinct desktop and mobile dimensions illustrate that a design system may specify different assets for different layouts; they should not be treated as a required pair for every website.
Implement the logo without distorting or hiding it
- Measure the usable header area. Account for vertical padding, navigation, controls, and the narrowest supported layout.
- Set a rendered maximum height. Choose a height that fits the header with visible whitespace. Keep the image’s aspect ratio so a rectangular logo is not stretched into a square.
- Choose the lockup per breakpoint. Use the full wordmark when it fits; switch to a compact or symbol-only asset when needed.
- Use SVG where accepted. Otherwise export a raster fallback at the largest needed display density and verify it at its actual CSS size.
- Make the logo link to the homepage. Provide an appropriate accessible name, and ensure the link works with a keyboard. NCI requires its logo to link home, while Defra requires logo links to be keyboard-usable.
- Test the actual page. Check focus visibility, screen-reader output, contrast, and zoom at the smallest responsive layout as well as larger widths.
If the logo image is the only content of the homepage link, give the link or image an accessible name that identifies the destination or brand. If nearby text already provides the site name and the image is purely decorative, use an appropriate empty alternative for the image while keeping the text in the document. Avoid announcing the same brand name twice.
Also check the logo against its background and any focus or hover treatment. Defra’s guidance requires WCAG 2.2 AA contrast for text and interactive elements. Contrast requirements should be considered alongside the surrounding header, not as a reason to alter the logo’s proportions.

Verify the header at real breakpoints
Review the logo in the rendered page, not only in an image editor. Test the narrowest layout, an intermediate width, and a large screen; also zoom the page and navigate by keyboard. Look for clipping, overlap, unintended stretching, a blurry raster edge, and wordmark text that stops being readable.
A browser screenshot can help compare the same header across viewport sizes or confirm that a CSS change did not affect the logo. For a local site, use your browser’s responsive design mode and capture the page at the sizes you support. If capturing a public URL, keep in mind that the resulting image reflects the page state the browser can load; it does not replace accessibility checks with a keyboard or screen reader.

Troubleshoot common logo problems
The logo looks blurry
Check whether the source is a low-resolution raster enlarged beyond its intended size. Use SVG if the platform accepts it, or export a raster fallback at the largest required display density. Verify the rendered size in the page rather than relying on the export dimensions alone.
The logo looks stretched or cropped
Keep the source aspect ratio and inspect the CSS or platform crop settings. Do not force a horizontal wordmark into a square thumbnail box. If a platform requires a square asset, provide a separate symbol variant when appropriate.
The full wordmark does not fit on mobile
Do not keep reducing its size if the text becomes unreadable. Use a compact or symbol-only mobile lockup, and confirm the site name is still exposed accessibly where necessary.
The platform rejects the file
Check its accepted formats, upload dimensions, and restrictions. Microsoft SharePoint guidance accepts PNG, JPEG, and SVG subject to platform restrictions; other systems may differ. Prepare a supported raster fallback if SVG cannot be uploaded.
The logo link is hard to use or unclear
Ensure the homepage link can receive keyboard focus and has an appropriate accessible name. Check focus visibility and avoid duplicate announcements when nearby text already names the site.

Frequently asked questions
Should a header logo be a separate image from the site name?
It depends on the design and responsive space. If the wordmark becomes illegible at a small breakpoint, a compact visual mark alongside text in the page can preserve identification more effectively than shrinking the entire logo.
