Choose a free image generation model API by comparing the actual allowance, how it renews or expires, the billing unit after it runs out, the model and integration you need, and the license terms for your use. A monthly credit, a one-time sign-up grant, a daily compute allocation, free model weights, and a browser demo are different offers—not interchangeable promises of unlimited free image generation.

The figures below are provider-published terms accessed on September 29, 2026, not independent tests. Providers can change pricing, models, and terms, so check the linked official pages before building around an allowance.

What does “free” mean for an image generation API?

A free image generation API for testing can mean several distinct things. Identify the offer type before estimating how many images it will produce:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Recurring credits: a small balance refreshes on a stated schedule. Hugging Face documents monthly credits for free users.
  • One-time credits: an account receives a starter balance, which may be consumed and then require a purchase. Stability AI describes a Google sign-in grant.
  • Daily compute allocation: usage is counted in a provider-defined unit rather than images. Cloudflare Workers AI documents a daily Neurons allocation.
  • Free model weights: you can run a model yourself subject to its license, but you still provide hardware and operate the inference stack.
  • Free web demo: a browser interface may permit trials without offering API access at all.

A model’s license and a hosted service’s billing are separate. Free-to-self-host weights do not imply that the provider’s hosted endpoint is unlimited or free.

Compare the documented offers

This table focuses on the allowance and costs established by the providers’ current published pages. It does not rank image quality, speed, reliability, or rate limits; the cited information does not support a controlled comparison on those dimensions.

Provider Free offer and renewal Metering and after-limit cost Important qualification
Hugging Face Inference Providers $0.10 in monthly credits for free users, subject to change. Credits apply to eligible requests routed through Hugging Face. A custom provider key is billed directly by that provider and does not use the Hugging Face credits. Check the selected model/provider rate for costs after credits. The allowance is small and best treated as experimentation credit, not a dependable production tier. Hugging Face pricing documentation.
Stability AI Developer Platform 25 API credits granted with Google sign-in; the documentation does not describe this as a recurring monthly grant. Consumption varies by model and modality. Additional credits cost $1 per 100. These hosted API credits are distinct from the terms for self-hosting Core Models. Stability AI getting-started documentation.
Replicate The reviewed pricing page does not establish a general free quota. Pricing depends on the model: some models charge by runtime and hardware, others by input/output. Examples include FLUX Dev at $0.025 per output image and FLUX Schnell at $3 per 1,000 output images. These are provider-published model examples, not a guaranteed price for all models or workloads. Check the relevant model page. Replicate pricing.
Cloudflare Workers AI 10,000 Neurons per day at no charge. Above that allocation, a Workers Paid plan is required; the documented rate is $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons above the free allocation. Neurons are not a universal per-image unit. Image count depends on the model and workload. Cloudflare Workers AI pricing.

Hugging Face also lists $2.00 in monthly credits for PRO users and $2.00 per seat for Team or Enterprise organizations on its pricing page. Those are separate paid-plan details, not part of the free-user allowance.

How to choose the right API for your workload

  1. Classify the free offer. Is it monthly credit, a one-time sign-up grant, daily compute, self-hosted weights, or only a browser demo? Note when it resets or whether it expires.
  2. Confirm the actual image task. Check that the endpoint and model support the operation you need—such as text-to-image or another required modality—and the output format and dimensions your application can use.
  3. Understand the meter. A price per output image is easier to forecast than runtime charges, credits with model-dependent consumption, or compute units such as Neurons. Find the selected model’s rate rather than converting an abstract allowance into an unsupported image count.
  4. Estimate post-free cost. Work out a representative workload: requests per day, outputs per request, and any variation in model or resolution. Apply the provider’s current model-specific pricing, not the headline free amount alone.
  5. Check the billing route. With Hugging Face routing, eligible requests can draw on Hugging Face credits; supplying a custom provider key sends billing to that provider instead. Confirm which account, key, and payment method a deployment will use.
  6. Read the applicable terms. Separate the model license from hosted API terms. Check commercial-use conditions, data handling, and deployment permissions for the model and service you will actually use.
  7. Validate operations yourself. Verify concurrency, rate limits, latency, and availability with the provider documentation and a small test. No controlled cross-provider performance test is established by the figures in the table.

For occasional experimentation, a small credit balance may be sufficient. For repeated use, choose based on the expected monthly workload and the rate after the free allowance. Self-hosting may change the economics when you have suitable hardware and can operate it, but it adds infrastructure and remains subject to the model license.

What each option is suited to

Hugging Face: trying routed inference across providers

The monthly free-user credit can help explore eligible routed requests without beginning with a large commitment. Its key limitation is scale: $0.10 is an experimentation allowance, not a promise of sustained production use. If you attach a custom provider key, do not expect those requests to draw on Hugging Face credits; the provider bills that key directly.

Stability AI: a small hosted API trial or licensed self-hosting

The 25-credit Google sign-in grant is a starter balance, and the number of generations it covers depends on the model and modality. Additional credits are sold at $1 per 100. Stability AI separately describes Core Models as free to self-host under its license, which references a $1 million annual revenue threshold for commercial use. That threshold is a license term, not an API quota; read the current Stability AI license and service terms for your particular business and deployment.

Replicate: comparing usage-based costs

The reviewed pricing page does not establish a general free allowance, so do not choose Replicate on the assumption that API use is free. It can still be useful for comparing model-specific rates: the page lists FLUX Dev at $0.025 per output image and FLUX Schnell at $3 per 1,000 images. Rates differ by model and pricing method, so use the relevant model page and forecast your actual volume.

Cloudflare Workers AI: a daily compute budget

The documented 10,000-Neuron daily no-charge allocation is a compute budget, not a fixed number of images. Workers Paid is required above the allocation, with the pricing page stating $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons above it. Estimate image volume from the chosen model and your workload rather than treating Neurons as interchangeable with outputs.

Can I use a free image generation API commercially?

There is no single answer across providers or models. A free API allowance answers a billing question, not a rights question. Review the current terms for the hosted service and the specific model, including commercial-use permission, output-related terms, data handling, and any restrictions on your intended deployment.

Stability AI’s Core Models license is a distinct self-hosting route and references a $1 million annual revenue threshold for commercial use. Do not apply that license condition to hosted API credits, or assume it covers a different provider’s model. Hugging Face credits, Replicate model charges, and Cloudflare’s compute allocation likewise do not by themselves establish commercial rights for every model available through those services.

Test an API before relying on the free tier

  1. Pick one representative prompt and model. Keep the prompt and relevant generation settings consistent for a useful operational comparison.
  2. Record what the provider meters. Track credits, output images, runtime, or Neurons, as applicable; note the model and settings with each result.
  3. Check the billable path. Verify whether the request used provider-routed credits, a direct provider key, or a paid account. Do not infer billing from a successful response alone.
  4. Repeat at expected volume. A single successful call does not establish that concurrency, rate limits, or monthly cost will fit production needs.
  5. Recheck terms and prices before launch. Free allowances and model pricing can change, and a test account’s terms may not match the production account or use.

For website screenshots—not image generation—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie/consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billed status reported in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP server, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

cURL example, using Stripe as the target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Troubleshooting common selection and billing problems

  • The free allowance seems smaller than expected: check whether the grant is monthly, one-time, or daily, and whether model or modality changes credit consumption. Do not assume one credit equals one image.
  • Hugging Face credits are not being used: confirm the request is routed through Hugging Face rather than sent with a custom provider key. Custom-key requests are billed directly by the provider.
  • A model trial requires payment after a few generations: check the model’s consumption rate and your remaining balance; for Stability AI, the 25-credit sign-in grant is not a fixed image count.
  • A cost estimate does not match image volume: look for runtime/hardware pricing or compute units. Replicate’s billing method varies by model, and Cloudflare’s Neurons cannot be converted into a universal image count from the general allocation alone.
  • Commercial use is unclear: identify the exact model and whether you are self-hosting or using a hosted endpoint, then read both the applicable model license and service terms. A free allowance is not a commercial-use grant.
  • Performance or rate limits block deployment: consult current service documentation and test the needed concurrency and workload directly. The published allowance figures do not establish comparative latency, uptime, or rate limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does $0.10 in Hugging Face free credits renew?

Hugging Face describes the free-user allowance as monthly credits; its pricing page says the amount is subject to change.

Are Stability AI’s 25 credits monthly?

The getting-started documentation describes 25 credits granted with Google sign-in, not a recurring monthly grant.

Does Cloudflare’s 10,000-Neuron allocation mean 10,000 images?

No. Neurons measure compute, and the number of images depends on the model and workload.
